Just wanted to throw out some very disappointing losses in past seasons that actually sort of lit a fire ... so let's hope the UMD loss is a necessary slap in the face, and we turn around and slap Michigan with a real good slap.
2021-22: L 81-65 at Maryland. This one dropped us to 13-5 overall and was our second straight loss (we were also without Kofi). We would win our next four (including wins over #10 Michigan State and #11 Wisconsin) and 9 of our last 12 to win our first Big Ten championship in 17 years!
2020-21: L 66-63 vs. Maryland and L 87-81 vs. #21 Ohio State. Back-to-back home losses dropped us to 9-5 overall and 5-3 in Big Ten play. FWIW, as far as perception went, we went from #12 in the AP Poll to #22. However, we won 7 in a row and 11 of our final 12 regular season games, including 5 top 25 wins and 3 top 10 wins! The final three games of winning at #23 Wisconsin (without Ayo), at #2 Michigan (without Ayo) and at #7 Ohio State (Ayo's return with the mask) will always be legendary to me. Pissed off about Michigan wrongfully being crowned champs, we then plowed through the BTT (beating 2 more top 10 teams!) to hang a banner and get a #1 seed.
2003-04: L 58-54 vs. #24 Purdue and L 70-60 at Northwestern. The loss to Purdue snapped our 30-something game home winning streak, and the loss to a bad NU team dropped us to 10-4 (1-2) and out of the top 25 in Weber's first year. We would win 13 of our final 14 games (including our final 10 in a row!) to win an outright Big Ten championship and eventually reach the Sweet Sixteen.
2001-02: L 88-57 at Indiana, L 78-67 at Ohio State and L 67-61 vs. Michigan State. Three straight losses dropped us from #9 to #21 in the AP Poll and brought our record to 15-7 (4-5). However, we would win our final 8 games in a row to tie for a Big Ten championship and make the Sweet Sixteen.
Still a lot of ball left to be played and plenty of lofty goals that are still achievable. However, the effort/execution vs. Maryland has got to be ancient history, starting with tomorrow night!
