Aaaaall about perception of the program. If we're ranked, we get more media coverage and attention from the broader population. More recognition = better recruits = better program -> rinse, repeat. Are polls always accurate like Kenpom might be? Hell no. But that's not what this is about

Stated this in another reply too but true recognition comes from big ten championships and tourney success

And that cool looking number next to your team name in score bugs generally comes from the AP poll.

Most coaches in America of high major programs would probably prefer to not be ranked if you asked them. That tells you what truly matters.

They would be lying if they did, IMO. I don't think that is truly what they think. May say it, but don't really believe it. They know as well as you and I do that perception is reality. While it is not the end all be all, being ranked most definitely matters; and the AP is the number that the media uses although Kenpom, Torvik, et. al are certainly more objective and accurate IMO.

This, I’m honestly shocked how many fans don’t get that rankings are important for this reason alone. Some outlets/apps default to only showing scores for top 25 teams, and many social media pages that cover college basketball repost the top 25 every Monday. Simply put, it’s a club you want to be a part of.

For fans who say they literally don’t want to be ranked, it honestly comes across as some “old school” persona and act, haha.

We were #26, so it’d be a joke at this point if we aren’t ranked. Anyone with a set of eyes can see we’ve been playing like a top 15 team since December started … time to forgive us for the Marquette/Cincinnati games already, lol!
I like the lack of respect thing as it pertains to the brackets. I think the Big Ten has slipped in those eyes and that's a much better setup for big wins in March

I highly doubt this. I think they're all adept at downplaying being left out of the rankings but I'd also wager they would all like to be included whenever possible. It's exposure. It's perception. It's job security.

It’s a ridiculous take that the polls aren’t important. AP, Coaches, all of the polls are important.
Exposure, consistent recognition, nationally or regionally televised games, recruiting in-roads, NIL, and on and on.
Those saying it doesn’t matter are likely the same guys that got rejected with a few prom invitations and then went around saying they didn’t want to go to prom anyways.
Our beloved were ranked top 10-15 when the season began and we were all doing cartwheels saying we were happy but under rated. We pooped the bed early in the season (with legitimate reasons) and lost the ranking.
So it takes a little more effort to win back the voters and prove the worth of the ranking….that’s ok. We will be ranked Monday.
But to say it doesn’t matter….????
Relax, prom wasn’t that great anyways….you didn’t miss much.

On a good roll, they just need to stay focused, there's no nights off in the B10; their next opponent Nebraska might be in last place but I've seen bits of their last two games against MSU and OSU and those guys are scrappy, took OSU to OT.

Facts...they had OSU beat really...they were up 5 with a minute to go.

Then while up 2, missed 2 fts and OSU came down and tied it with seconds left.

They were within 5 of MSU at Breslin til a late run put it out of reach.

We're the better team, but they arent as awful as their record indicates IMO

Illini are #9 in the country according to the Sagarin computer rankings at 89.78. Purdue is # 6, Puke #7. Then you have to drop down into the twenties to find more Big 10 presence--Wisky and MSU.
