If you'd told me before the B1G season kicked off that between Ayo, Trent, Adam Miller, and DMFW...that DMFW would not only have the most made 3's of the starting guards, but doing it at a 75% clip...I would've bet you another one of my Nebraska beach houses. Maybe even one with indoor plumbing.

NW concerns me immensely. Don't think for a second the won't come out hot. Illini need to run them into the ground and score early and often. Much depends on Frazier and Miller hitting shots and Ayo being aggressive from the git go. Not too concerned about defense as they understand they have to bring it, but slow starts hitting shots, not getting Kofi the ball early, turnovers, and poor FF shooting have to stay in Champaign. Kofi has to bully them as well as being aware he has shooters open on the perimeter and getting it back out quickly if doubled. Conditioning and depth will pay off if there are no sustained scoring droughts.

But if this game gets slowed down and Illini shoot sub 60% from the line, this game will go in the L column.

Which big is going to be "Good Kipper" in Evanston? Hawk or Grand? One of them must.
The bolded is the difference between us being a good vs. great team.

Can't wait to watch this game... I'd love a double-digit win but will be very happy even if we squeak out a close one. B1G road wins are golden and I will be relieved with even an ugly win.

In what seems like a decade ago, here are the highlights from the Illinois win in Evanston in February of 2020. Griffin with 24 and Ayo with that sweet behind-the-back layup. Damonte appears to be guarding Nance a lot in the highlights... I'm surprised we got away with that given the height difference.

PS. LOL at Beran getting in that Kofi poster.

Oh wait, didn’t I predict that. Well maybe not.

My biggest concern is that the Illini 5 will play against wildcat 8. If they get us in foul trouble they have a real shot against us.

Our depth has mostly been unchallenged thus far. Just because we haven't seen it, doesn't mean we dont have it. Hawkins and Grandison have given quality minutes. No reason to think if we happen to really be in foul trouble that either or both those guys cant give 5-10 minutes of quality play.

Maybe it's because it's NW, I just feel like their success early on is a sham. They might finish closer to 8th than 14th in the B1G, but talent level is just tiers away from ours. We definitely have started showing a propensity to play down to the other teams level. I'm more worried about our short comings then their strengths.

Maybe. But what this team hasn't done yet, is lose to a bad team. I would like every game to be like the Minnesota game, but that just doesn't happen very often for anyone. This league has some very good teams. And the separation between them is not that large unfortunately.
Our slow starts haven't been for effort, but rather missing shots. Against Purdue, we missed layups and wide open threes to start that game. Thankfully they didn't do much better. If you aren't hitting, your defense needs to keep the other team in check. The last two years Underwoods teams have been able to do that, and I know it is a focus.

Ref "...I'm more worried about our shortcomings". So I read that primarily as freethrows...which should be a worry.

Found this really interesting engineer/math analysis on freethrows in case the staff is interested.

A ray of optimism...this offense is probably at its statistical floor for the year.
Miller and Trent have combined for more than 50% of our 3pt attempts in B1G games this year and are shooting 29%.
Once either of those two guys start making their shots, and they will, this offense is going to flambe some teams.
Our offense is at its floor and we are still the 6th best offense according to KenPom. We can only get better.

Any idea why DMFW is missing from this list?

Against Minnesota and Duke we came out strong and never looked back. Come out hot, kill their try to come back and you get in there head .
When you come out cold against a weak team they start getting confident that they can win. Starts are important . High school coaches often have plays to get those first two or three baskets. I realize they are not scouted as heavily as the BIG. However we do need to come out hot, at least not cold.

IIRC - need to average 2.5 3PM per game for the NCAA list. DMW is at 1.7. I remember when Aaron Jordan was lighting it up and he wasn't recognized because he was making 2.1 a game. a brief review confirms everyone on the NCAA list has hit 2.5 per game, which is kinda stupid when the leader has only played one game...

I thought that in the game vs Purdue that we got good shots at the beginning of the game, we just missed jumpers and free throws. Not much Underwood can do about that. Although I am someone who wishes we had a few more set plays to get specific shots for players. For instance when Trent or Adam are hot from 3 I'd like to see us run a set play with off ball screens to get them another shot. Obviously set plays don't always work, but the odds of getting the exact shot that you want go up. Most of our set plays seem to be to get post touches or to get Ayo coming off a ball screen, though we did run a new one last game to get Ayo a FT line jumper off a screen and curl.

How does a Nebraska beach house work? Is that like on a pond or a river?

Also, I can't be the only one begging Da'Monte to take a few more 3s. I know his percentage is up because he doesn't take a shot if he's not feeling it, but it feels to me while I'm screaming at my TV that he has some pretty open shots and turns them down. It feels to me that Trent, Adam, and Ayo all take shots where they're fairly wide open but Da'Monte will pass those shots up unless he's got miles and miles of distance between him and his defender, and even then it seems like if the balls didn't connect just write in his hands he'll still pass up an open shot attempt.

Maybe I'm looking at this backward and I should be begging Trent and Adam to be more selective in their shots and I should be begging the whole team to pass the ball around more to create more insanely wide open shots so that all 3 of those guys can be shooting at 67+%?

"Our research suggests that players should aim the ball beyond the center of the rim. Launch the ball at a high angle and as high above the ground as possible. (The ball, at the highest point of its arc, should reach the top of the backboard.) Line up the ball to eliminate the side angle. And try to launch the ball with smooth body motion, to produce a consistent launch speed."

Also, 3 rotations and 52 degree launch angle is best!

NW hasn't beaten anyone that is any good unless you count a one point win over tOSU at home. They have lost to every decent team that they've played and lost badly in their past two games vs. Iowa and Michigan. We should win by double digits.
