I agree. Andrej has the size, speed, and grown man strength to make Martinelli really have to work for it.
I don’t know. Andrej is a lean athletic 3 at around 205. Martinelli is a slightly undersized 4 at 225 who loves backing guys down.

I think Mirk gets the assignment amongst the starters but I am a little worried Martinelli’s herky jerky style will put some fouls on him.

This may be counterintuitive after last year but I actually think Ben will be most effective guarding Martinelli. He’s gotten so much stronger since last year and has improved so much defensively. Although not overly quick, I think Ben has the quickness to chase Marinelli on the perimeter, at this point he has a strong enough base I don’t think Martinelli can move him, and he is longer than Mirk and can make those odd angle shots Martinelli loves more difficult.

When page is on the floor, l probably have one of the Ivisics out there. But if it’s singleton I might go small with Mirk and Ben. Throw Mirk on singleton and let Ben chase Martinelli.

This-year Ben (who is a way better defender than last-year Ben) seems like a really good matchup for Martinelli. Ben has been moving his feet and walling up with his length extremely well. Among the starters I suspect Mirk starts on Martinelli, but we may also see Kylan and Andrej get their turns. If Martinelli gets going at all I suspect we see Ben early and often.

I think Illinois/Northwestern in basketball is very comparable to Tennessee/Vanderbilt and Georgia/Georgia Tech in football as far as dynamics. Want to label it a rivalry because of some "official" or "on-paper" reasons like that it is instate and they are protected opponents? Fine, go ahead ... I have zero issue with that. But the size and type of the fan bases are just so different that you will never have this "House Divided" dynamic like you do in other states like Iowa/Iowa State, Oklahoma/Oklahoma State, Clemson/South Carolina, etc. Add in the larger state school having an almost astronomically better history in all three examples, and it just takes SO much for it to graduate past a big brother/little brother dynamic ... and even then, in a case like Northwestern winning 7 out of 10 vs. Illinois in basketball or Vandy all of a sudden getting good and beating Tennessee in football, you still are never going to get Illini fans to hate Northwestern like they do Iowa, and you are never going to get Tennessee fans to hate Vandy like they hate Alabama.

I have zero problem calling it a rivalry ... but it's never going to be better than our fourth best rivalry in basketball, and when that's the case, you are naturally going to have Illini fans unhappy having NU as our only protected opponent while we are playing schools like Iowa or Indiana just once most years.
I'll take it a step farther. I am much more interested and excited about the annual matchups, and consider these rivalries with more importance: Indiana, Iowa, Purdue, Michigan, MSU, Wisconsin, OSU and Mizzou. I consider these our annual measuring sticks and games I always want to win. A win feels good, a loss feels like "oh well" or "damn". Playing Northwestern is a Lose-Lose proposition. A win just feels like relief, a loss feels humiliating. That's just me.

My super subjective/personal ranking (in isolation of a given game) goes like this.

1) Braggin' Rights (Missouri) ... it's been an awesome and romanticized event for me since I was a little kid. Even if we sort of forget about Mizzou come January, winning this one before Christmas is always so fun. I will say, however, that I selfishly want Missouri to not be so terrible ... it hurts the rivalry, and I want to get back to this game being on ESPN or even FOX regularly!

2) Iowa ... Most of my friends are Iowa fans, and winning 10 of 11 vs. them has been great. Similarly to Mizzou, however, I don't have this desire to see Iowa lose every game. I think it is objectively good for our program for Iowa to be seen as a good/top 25 basketball program ... it's arguably our most mutual rivalry, and it benefits us for the rivalry to be seen as a bigger deal outside of our two fan bases!

3) Indiana ... Now that the Gordon stuff is practically ancient history, I actually sort of forget how much I hate Indiana until we play. However, when those ridiculous candy stripe warmups come out and it's game time, MAN I want to beat those Loosiers. Unlike the first two, I DO want Indiana to lose every game. I'm sick of the media pretending they are still this special program, and every year that goes by where we are in a clearly better spot than them (and inching closer to taking the series lead!) is great in my book.

4) Purdue ... I actually used to have practically zero hatred toward Purdue and even was sort of fond of them, given Weber's connection there and our shared hatred for Indiana. However, it sucks admitting that as good as we have been since 2020, they have just been a notch better. We need to start beating them more, and this is de facto a huge game for us every year these days.

--- Big drop off ---

5) Northwestern ... I'll caveat by saying that I am specifically ranking the game in Evanston, and I would feel differently if I didn't live in Chicago. However, it SUCKS losing to these guys in one of the few games that I get to see every year, especially after I pay for two insanely overpriced tickets, pay for a babysitter and go through the traffic-filled nightmare to get up to that high school gym and INCREDIBLY overrated college town.

6) Michigan ... This one is almost entirely due to the current winning streak. Given their unfounded arrogance on the basketball side of things, I think it is absolutely hilarious that we have owned them for so long, and it would be oh so sweet to beat them yet again this year when they have one of their better teams in a while.

After that, it's a pretty big drop-off. Sure, I care more about a series vs. a traditional Big Ten team like Ohio State and even Minnesota than I do Rutgers, and I especially care more about a series vs. a typically good program like MSU or Wisconsin ... and I will find beating a storied former Pac 12 team like UCLA more interesting than beating Oregon. However, the rest is more or less just divided into two big pots of "legacy Big Ten" (including PSU to me) and "new Big Ten" (including Rutgers and Maryland). I don't really see a game vs. Wisconsin or MSU as having this "zest" in the same way as Iowa or Indiana. Put in other words, in a scenario where a given team is terrible and the matchup is not that exciting that year, I will care more about beating Iowa/Indiana than MSU/OSU. Honorable mention to Maryland, though, as I am REALLY sick of them owning us!

While I think they are gritty and have interchangeable parts, I just don't think NW can hang if we come out with intensity.

Illini: 83
NW: 64

The football rivalry has gotten two big boosts in recent years:

1. The Hat
2. The bizarre Fitz/Teddy Greenstein thing

Basketball doesn't have those things, and frankly I hope the two programs never get close enough in success level to heat things up.

With the moves they're making in football I suspect that will retain its juice for the foreseeable future though.

Also, it's just undeniable that despite some of our fans' historic attitudes, we just don't have the logical reasoning to feel that superior to NU Football, haha. If we continue to be this good at football, we might regain that ... but they've been a better program than us over the last 25 years.

Regarding your middle part, I cannot agree more and I remember watching an episode of The Journey on BTN in like 2015 or 2016 or something. They were filming before one of our games in Evanston and really hyping up the Illini/Northwestern rivalry, citing how the last 6 games or so were super close and the series was like 3-3 or something, and they were also highlighting this game as "essential for Illinois' NCAA Tournament hopes." They had (IIRC) Kendall Gill on the program being interviewed, and it was hilariously sad how little insight he could provide into this "rivalry" because when he was in school they were an automatic W, lol. I remember thinking at that moment, "Wow, we really have hit rock bottom..." :ROFLMAO:

I hate Michigan a lot more than you do, lol

The NW game in Evanston always makes me antsy. I really hope we stomp them, but any winning score is acceptable. I agree with some other posters that Ben will acquit himself well against Martinelli this go around.

Tired: Put together two halves where you win both by 100

Wired: Let NW hang around, Wagler bomb at the buzzer, have NW move up in the NET even in a loss too snag another road Q1

Based on history even a triple OT win would be an improvement.

However this team appears to have higher floor than last year so I would like to see easy win like Iowa where we lead from start to finish.

If we just let him score 60 and no one else scores we’re probably in the clear
I remember that thought about Jalen Pickett.

Luckily Northwestern doesn't have nearly as much shooting to surround Martinelli but Page can put the ball on the floor a bit as a big and I wouldn't be surprised to see him give Tomi problems on that end.

If you let Martinelli kill you and a couple of guys knock down 3s and let them hang around your always at risk of dropping a game.

Wild that we are as favored at Northwestern as Purdue is at home against Iowa.
So that means we are way over the spread and Purdue is under in a loss, right?
