Personally, I think to get the nation to buy into us as a top 10 team and legit CFP contender, we will need to win by at least a touchdown, if not more. Anything else, on like a last second FG or something, then I think most of the nation would think that it was nothing more than a fluke win.

Can Illinois wear O-B-O with Oregon choosing that uniform combo? Forgot how the rules apply.
I believe they can as long as the home team (obviously Oregon) approves of it. It’s why some of us are holding out for all-orange vs Northwestern at Wrigley.

If Illinois asked, I doubt Oregon would object. But I don’t think Illinois will bother asking. Personally, I’d love to see a color vs color matchup.

Respectfully disagree. We as Illini fans have become conditioned to what we perceive as disrespect solely because it’s Illinois athletics. There is enough buzz surrounding the team from certain circles in CFB that a win in Eugene would immediately launch this program into the national spotlight. OSU just lost there and that’s considered a quintessential “good loss” from a resume standpoint.

Depends what you mean by CFP contender. If we beat Oregon we would certainly be a contender to make the CFP lol, maybe even a favorite too. If we beat Oregon we may be able to make the CFP at 9-3. Who cares if it's seen as a little fluky your resume is your resume and that win alone gets you extremely far. Now this team obviously would never been seen as a contender to actually win the CFP and that to me is fair.

I believe you need special NCAA dispensation to not have one team wearing white.

Which is silly.

If we win this game we'll be in every single playoff projection that exists on Monday morning.

Don’t know how accurate or current this is, but I found this on an officials association page.

3. If the home team wears colored jerseys, the visiting team may also wear colored jerseys, if and only if the following two conditions have been satisfied

a. The home team has agreed in writing prior to the game; and

b. The conference of the home team certifies that the jersey of the visiting team is of a contrasting color.

So maybe it is OK to do as long as the home team agrees in writing and it’s out of the NCAA’s purview now. Clearly, navy blue is a contrasting color from the yellow Oregon is wearing.

I usually don’t geek out too much over uniforms, but I would for a black/yellow/black Oregon vs a O/B/O Illinois.

Beating the consensus #1 team on the road (by even 1 point), three other ranked wins at time game played, with the only loss to a top 3 team on the road would easily make the Illini top 10 and legit CFP contention. Even the nation is not that stupid.

There is no understating how big of an opportunity Saturday is for the program.

You right going 4-1 against ranked teams in October will be a heck of a resume builder.

I should have made it clearer that when I meant "CFP contender," I meant that as a contender (in the eyes of the nation) to actually win the playoffs.

If we win, no matter how and by how much, we are making the playoffs (barring an epic collapse the rest of the season), but unless we handily beat Oregon, I don't think many people would give us much of a shot to win the playoffs.

I remember several years ago, both USC and UCLA agreed to lose a timeout in the first half so they could go back to both wearing their home jerseys when they played; that tradition was from back when they both used the LA Coliseum as a home stadium, and it was only renewed in the last 10-15 years (I cannot remember when it was). I think since then BYU and Utah might have "gained permission" into that club?

Personally, I am all for both teams wearing their home uniforms in select rivalries where the two color combos allow for it (i.e., there is appropriate contrast between the uniforms that it looks cool). USC and UCLA is an obvious one, but I think Florida/Georgia, Alabama/Auburn and Clemson/South Carolina are some other ones that would look cool.

As for us, Northwestern/Illinois is somewhat of a no-brainer for us to always wear orange (or at least at a neutral setting like Wrigley), and judging from many examples of this for Braggin' Rights over the years, I also think Illinois/Missouri naturally lends itself to this setup.

EDIT: For the Wrigley game, my cautiously optimistic prediction is that we see these:

As a lifelong Illini fan in my late 40s who has experienced the better part of three decades of football trials and tribulations, I just keep repeating to myself “we got six, I’d like eight, and anything after that is a bonus.” :)

I 1000% agree. I was in no way trying to take anything away from a win. That would be amazing, and I don't care how we do it. Also, I don't care whether we would be a favorite in the CFP or not. Make the playoffs and anything can happen.

All I was saying is that if we handily beat Oregon, the nation would not only look at us as legit, but as one the absolute best teams in the country.

I love this forum. We are now discussing how much we would have to beat Oregon by to be thought of as a contender to win the playoffs. This program has come so far that we are even having this discussion. Not many years ago we couldn’t give away tickets.
