Purdue 16. Defense plays ok but Purdue moves the ball and gets 3 field goals

Huh? The defensive front had 17 pressures on 43 drop backs. A pressure rate of 39.5%.

And on the season, USC averages 6.4 yards per carry. We held them to 3.7, half of their season average.

We were fine up front against USC.

Was the best day for the defensive line of the season, across the board. It could be a bellwether of future teams not being able to key on Jacas, which could improve his (underwhelming so far) performance. Also, Maiva impressed the hell out of me last week. A bunch of big-time throws under duress. Connelly has him as the #1 QB so far.

Going off of Connelly's list, Illinois has faced the #1 and #4 QBs this season over the past two weeks.

The only reason there weren't more sacks was Maiava displaying some really high level movement in the pocket and making tough throws with guys on him.

Purdue represents one of our three active trophy game rivalries, one of four of our total trophy game rivalries (including Mizzou), one of five total protected rivalries we've ever had (add in Indiana) and one of six total teams that I think you could reasonably call our "rivals" in any real sense (I'm adding Iowa here, as this was ripe to grow into a great one with the Bielema connection). Since Bielema became coach, below are our results vs. these opponents:

Purdue (Purdue Cannon Trophy)
W 50-49 in OT vs. Purdue in 2025
L 19-44 at Purdue in 2023
L 24-31 vs. Purdue in 2022
L 9-13 at Purdue in 2021

Northwestern (Land of Lincoln Trophy)
W 38-28 vs. Northwestern (Wrigley Field in Chicago, IL) in 2024
L 43-45 vs. Northwestern in 2023
W 41-3 at Northwestern in 2022
W 47-14 vs. Northwestern in 2021

Ohio State (Illibuck Trophy)
N/A ... first game is vs. #1 Ohio State in 2025

Missouri (Arch Rivalry Trophy)
N/A ... first game is vs. Missouri (Site TBD) in 2027

Indiana
L 10-63 at #19 Indiana in 2025
W 48-45 in OT vs. Indiana in 2023
L 20-23 at Indiana in 2022

Iowa
L 13-15 at #16 Iowa in 2023
W 9-6 vs. Iowa in 2022
L 23-33 at #17 Iowa in 2021

A few notes:
1) Most importantly, we need to beat Purdue this Saturday ... preferably by a lot. They have been a thorn in our side for way too many years, and we are just a better team this year. No excuses!!

2) With some obvious exceptions like Indiana this year, it has been nice that Bielema has had us competitive in most of these games, win or lose (one example being the heart breaking loss at #16 Iowa in 2023)

3) Win or lose, I'm excited to have OSU back on the schedule. The popular perception is that we are just this doormat compared to them and this is a strange rivalry, and that was certainly mostly the case after 2008. However, Illinois famously went 8-4 vs. OSU from 1983-1994, including a 5-game winning streak. We also won 7 of 10 games in Columbus (!!) from 1988 to 2007. Overall, from 1983 to 2007, the series was 12-11 in favor of OSU ... and even in years we lost, we were often an absolute THORN in OSU's side, including one-score losses to top 10 OSU teams in 1984, 1987, 1993, 2000, 2002 and 2006. Before the late Zook Era downturn, this was just flat-out an underrated rivalry and great historical peculiarity of the Big Ten!!

4) Really bummed we stopped playing Iowa every year at literally the worst time as far as that rivalry goes. Right as Wisconsin and Minnesota were both trending downward and we were under a resurgence with a former Iowa player as our coach, we had multiple close, competitive games with them. This was primed to be become a good rivalry on both sides, as evidenced by how great it is in hoops.

5) Once again, BEAT PURDUE. We currently have the Cannon and the Land of Lincoln trophies ... we have a shot to reclaim the Illibuck in under two weeks. BEAT PURDUE!!

RE #3:
The teams that have beaten Ohio State the most are
Michigan with 51 wins, Illinois with 30 wins, and Northwestern with 13 wins.

41-28
Gotta a feeling. No turnovers. Run the ball down their throat.

Also, perhaps my favorite Illini football stat of all time = Kirk Herbstreit 0-4 vs Illinois. It is weird how our few real good years since the early 90's lined up with OSU being on the schedule, the game being at their place & them being eminently beatable.

We beat them at home in 91 & not beaten them in Champaign since (hopefully in 10 days we end that streak). We beat them up there in 1994 (the Dana Howard guarantee game), 1999, 2001 & 2007. 94 was a 14 point margin, 99 was a 26 (yes 26) point margin & 01 was a 12 point margin. And in 01, OSU went to Whoretown (Ann Arbor) & beat Michigan in the Big House to give us the outright conference title. In the other trips to Columbus since the 94 season (7 games) our closest defeat is 26 points. A few 40 point plus beatdowns in there as well.

Just a bizarre history where if we have a good team & play at OSU that year, we win.

I worked with an Ohio State fan during the Herbstreit years. He was so frustrated. lol

If I'm Purdue...

I'm not punting.

REGARDLESS of where they are on the field. Go for broke. You aren't likely to stop Illinois' offense too many times. TOP could get lopsided quick and wear your thin defensive line out by the 2nd half.

Defense has shown no ability to get teams off the field on 3rd or 4th down since X went out.
