The last two matchups between these teams have been ugly for different reasons. Last year it was due to the infamous Indiana officiating crew throwing flags left and right on Illinois, with my favorite being a PI called on Witherspoon that negated an INT even though Charlie Jones was pushing into him.

We can win at least 4 more games! Call me optimistic. Like our chances against Purdue, Nebraska, Iowa, and NW. Come on!
If someone would have told me before the season started that 6-6 is being deemed our optimistic ceiling this year, I'd have projectile vomited. Absolutely kills me to think this may be the case now especially when every team left on our schedule not named Maryland is just not good

Really? I think this is a battle of over hyped teams. We're just as much in this upcoming game as Purdue is. What has Purdue done (especially compared to who they've played) that's made you think "Purdue has this in the bag!"?
I was at Purdue Cuse and Boilers can be beat, but our Oline must get push. We can wear them down. Our front 7 on D should give them fits, but HCard is pretty good.

I’m right there with you. Coming into the season I wanted 7-8 wins.

But, we’re ranked in the mid-80s in returning production from last year. While we retained some pieces (like Newton and Randolph), we also lost a lot.

We lost our entire secondary, our running back, our quarterback.

Last year, DeVito had 5 interceptions all season. Luke has 7 in the first 4 games of this season.

Last year our stud secondary averaged 1.8 interceptions per game. This year’s secondary has 3 interceptions through 4 games.

This team simply isn’t as good as last years.

While 6 wins might be a step back compared to last year. For the past 30 years every good season has been followed by a 5 win season. So 6 wins this year can break the curse and retain program momentum heading into the off-season.

1. It’s on the road. We weren’t able to beat them last year with a better team at home so I think it’s a long shot to beat them on the road this year.
2. Coaching. I think our coordinators have been exposed this year. We probably have equal-ish talent but I would give them the coaching edge.
3. It’s Illinois. I’ve been utterly disappointed with this team so far this year mostly because I allowed the off-season homer hype squad to increase my expectations for what this team could be. Four games in, I’m resetting my expectations so as not to be disappointed.

1) Neither team is comparable to last year. Purdue lost a lot of production from last year, as have Illinois. Purdue is playing much worse than they were at the time of game last year. This will be a tight game, so Illini have much better than a long shot. Also Purdue has been terrible at home this year.
2) Purdue has a completely new coaching staff, and they have looked overwhelmed all season. Not sure how you can give them the coaching edge.
3) Illini are exactly where many projected them to be 2-2. They have not looked good, but neither has any B1G West team. You sound a lot like Vince Vaughan in Dodgeball. Suggestion: sip a beer and enjoy the bumpy ride. This season is far from over.

If Illini put up a terrible performance next week, then I may agree with you, but until then, I still see a team capable of winning (they just need to stop having self-inflicted wounds and get healthier).

Given our mediocre to poor offensive line play, we will need to elminate the penalities and turnovers to win games.. I think this will a key variable in most games the remainder to the season.

I really believe people greatly underestimated what losing 4 out of last 5 at end of last season meant about that team and prospects for this team. Given what we lost off of that team and how season ended. I thought those projecting 8-10 wins for this team might be in dire jeopardy of orange kook-aid poisoning. I mean last year’s team was the best we’ve had in a long while, and it only won 8.
