Jake He just fits perfectly with that starting group. You CANNOT leave him and that opens up the entire floor. He’s also been solid defensively so he is not hurting you there.

Then Andrej coming off the bench just makes that group that much better. He provides a DYNAMIC scoring option.

Finally, when both Kylan and Andrej are on the floor together, you have two guys who aren’t great three-point shooters. I like breaking that up a little bit.

Don’t change a thing.
Boom 💯

i think sleepers actually makes a good point is about how effective Andrej is off the bench to balance out Wagler so that they're not competing for the ball when they're on the floor together.
I don't think we're paying Andrej what we're paying for him to come off the bench.

Underwood actually demurred when pressed on whether Jake would continue to start. I think we might be marginally better offensively with Jake, but Andrej is the more athletic and better defender.

I predict Andrej will be back starting in the Michigan game. Michigan just overwhelms teams with their size and athleticism and I suspect we'll want Andrej out there to help deal with Lendeborg, Cadeau and Burnett.
Saw that! Will be interesting to see how it plays out. I like the spacing Jake brings to the first group and the punch Andrej gives us off the bench. Can't go wrong either way though.

That's irrelevant. It's sunk cost. Petrovic is one of our highest-paid players - would you prefer we take Keaton off the court to give him more playing time?
How do you know what he is getting paid? How do you know how it compares to the rest of the lineup? Very curious if you could break down the list in greater detail.

How dunno how much did K McHale make in the early 80$?

How you start the game matters? That is complete B.S. It's how you finish the game matters. The adjustments that are made at time outs and half time and isolating the match ups is how basketball games are won and lost. And I hate to bring up a name that everyone hates but that is how both Brad and Tom Izzo coach during the game. Most of the time they have their assistants make the adjustments.

On this team "I don't think we're paying (anyone) to come of the bench" is a ridiculous statement. This team is about winning and they do so through exploiting match ups. That us why we have so many different players leading us in points, not one or two. It is also why players on other teams have career nights against us but we still win. You think Andrej honestly cares whether he starts or not? He cares about being in the game when he can excel and when the team is winning.

One thing that comes across is that none of you have ever been to a college basketball or NBA practice or even read about them. The prep that these guys go through prior to practice is immense. And that preparation is all about match ups and combinations on the floor at a given time. That is why you hear so many color analysts on our telecasts say " I would love to see the white board as to how to defend....." And that is because so many of the color analysts that telecast our games are former players.

Normally, there is significant interesting back and forth on this board. But the comments about what we pay someone and its relationship to whether he is in the starting line up or its important because its how you start the game that matters not consistent with (1) What any of the coaches or players say or (2) Reality of how Illinois basketball operates.

The amount of playing time for all players relates directly to how that player's match up is working in that specific game . How many times does Brad Underwood have to say in a presser "+/- is the most important stat we look at" for you to believe that?

This. Andrej is a ++ option any minutes he gets. But as a sixth man, that's just unfair.

Who starts the game seems to be a long standing sports issue. It means, "that player is one of the best" to everyone, including the player.

I'd call it progression to rise above this simplistic understanding and consider the game as a whole.

Unpopular opinion: Having mercurial, outspoken coaches like Mick and Fran in college basketball adds to the whole experience.
It certainly adds web forums fodder . . .
