Surprised that no one mentioned it in this thread yet that for Ayo's recruitment it came down to Illinois and Wake Forest. Still glad he chose Illinois.

I look for Illinois to win this game by 10+.

Pretty lame, but this is a snippet from Borzello's write-up on the challenge

Danny Manning and the Demon Deacons are struggling to start the season, losing four of their first six games -- while Brad Underwood has won his first six games in Champaign. For Wake Forest to right the ship, Bryant Crawford needs to take care of the ball, which isn't always easy against Illinois' pressure.

Wake Forest 85, Illinois 78

That snippet is rather lame. Everything Borzello writes send to support an Illinois win but his prediction is just the opposite. 🤨

No need to mention it. I think we're all pretty well aware.

I agree with your second sentiment. I'm truly surprised by the pessimism in this and the Illini Basketball thread. Wake has been terrible on the boards and has lost some truly shocking games, at home none the less. They have about the same level of experience in their squad as us and nowhere near as good of a coach. I think our main challenge will be that this is the first big road game for a lot of these guys in new roles (Alstork, Jordan) and the freshman.

ESPN's Super Special Matchup Predictor has Wake Forest College as a 73.7% favorite...that seems a bit extreme, I am curious as to what the Vegas line will be. I haven't seen it yet.

The only thing that is clear about this game is that nothing is very clear.
Neither team has played anyone and the data makes a projection not very helpful.

Sagarin has us strongly favored, with Illinois at 78 points and Wake at 64. A 14 point differential less the 5 point home court advantage = 9 point Illinois win.

Ken Pom has Illinois losing by 5, 81 - 76.

The line will indicate which team has a bigger fan base more than any insight into who is playing better basketball.

Underwood: Coming off a good week. Played teams that made us better, especially NC Central. They stressed us. Faced adversity at halftime.

Underwood: Great leadership from Te’Jon. Finke playing at high clip. Aaron Jordan playing great.

Underwood: Wake “driven by their guards,” but 7-1 center Doral Moore “is a problem.” Great 3-point shooting team.

Underwood: Wake is a good basketball team. Much better than their record. Very hungry team.

Underwood: Having an impact off the bench and productivity — sometimes better than starting lineup — is something we strive for. Aaron and Kipper productivity over 40 min “is off the charts”

Underwood: Like Jordan and Nichols off the bench. Frazier has had moments. “We’re coming in with firepower.” Hope that continues to be a bright spot for us

Underwood: we went to EIU and scrimmaged at Vandy to prepare us for road routine

Underwood: Freshmen have been very good. Did not allow anyone in gym on Saturday. Had a lot of games. Needed mental rest.

Underwood: DaMonte Williams was chomping at bit to get in and watch film. Smith in early this morning. They knew they weren’t right but want to be great.

Underwood: Smith very capable of being 5-6 rebound a game guy. We see that in practice. Unbelievable start to freshman year, but I’m never going to be satisfied with him just scoring points. So talented. Has dominant rebound days in practice.

Underwood: There’s reasons Aaron Jordan’s minutes have gone up and it doesn’t have to do with shooting.

Underwood: Danny Manning kicked my butt a lot on the court in the 80s. One of the best players I played against

Underwood: Had good relationship with Danny at Kansas-Kansas State and Tulsa-Stephen F. Austin

Underwood: won’t guard Doral Moore with one guy. Finke won’t block a bunch of shots. Great in ball screen coverages and staying out of foul trouble. We need his presence.

I think we win. Why? Because Mark Smith had a really crappy game on Friday, and he strikes me as the kind of guy who doesn't have back to back crappy games.

Mark Smith: 18 points
Finke, Black, and AJ with 12+ each
Illini win 82-74

Smith is a gamer and will not just let it go ... I watched Smith play all yr last season and one his hidden assets was his ability to shoot the long ball....I don't know if he's hasn't adjusted to the depth perception but I think he's pressing with the jumper...he has been in double figures all but one game and I believe when the long ball clicks we are in for a real treat...

Pinch post is tough especially if players are open and not given the ball.... not just Smith but a ton of players flashing

Smith is a playmaker and a true leader/floor general .... looks like he's struggling because he doesn't have the.ball in his hands & TJL goes to the right side every trip up court to start the offense..

Our game is on ESPNU at 8 CST. The Rutgers game is on ESPNU at 6 CST. There are also a pair of B1G/ACC games at 6 and 8 on ESPN2.

What happens if both of the early games run long? Typically when a game runs long, the start of one of the late games is shunted over to ESPN-News. Is there a second cable option if both games run long? I know about ESPN3, but switching between the internet and cable can lead to slow handshakes on my system.

Think your Sagarin numbers are off. Using his predictor, which is for point margin, he has Wake at 76, IL at 80, and home adv worth 3. That would put us as 1 pt favorites, which seems about right to me.

If Illinois can shoot 35% or better from 3 they win. Here's hoping they do and they do!

Go I!

Or in other words, they need to prove themselves a bit more before I go through the trouble of motivating a benched starter. I’m fine with that, but I just hope the best players get the most minutes.

I’ll be disappointed in the new staff if we have to relive the playing time controversy we had last year with Abrams and Tate.

Top ten in FT attempts?! I'm not great at finding stats. Where did last years team finish in freethrow attempts?

IMO, it seems like we've had a huge increase in layups and good attempts around the rim this year. The last several years you had a few guys who could get to the line if they wanted to (Rice, Hill, Bertrand) but most of the offense was passing around the perimeter before jacking up a bad 3. I love what Underwood is doing with the offense.

No 211.

Was it the next poll after that WF game that we went to #1?

I had that poll from the newspaper cut out and framed, hanging in my bedroom. Now it's in my sports memorabilia box waiting for a future man cave.

Yes, it was.
We were #3 and they were #1 coming in.
If I remember correctly, there was some thought that Kansas would move up from #2 to #1 (hope that memory is right), but we leapfrogged right over them and went to #1, where we stayed.

Great year.

Playing time and starters are two different issues. Need to see players in crunch time. May have that opportunity this week. Need to stop measuring best players by offensive numbers.

Yep. By virtue of our thorough trouncing of Wake we leapfrogged and took the #1 spot. I imagine it might have taken just a bit longer for us to nab that #1 spot had we just eaked out a victory.
