I honestly don't understand how you guys are so worried about this game. By no means are we world beaters however this WF team is TERRIBLE..... TERRIBLE. I'm not saying we are going to win but to just chalk it up as a loss just because its WF is laughable.

The great thing that I’ve started to notice that is different from the past; Underwood can inspire players to be productive on the floor without scoring points. Players that are used to scoring points especially. As a fan base, I think we’ve been somewhat if not totally disappointed with Alstork and TJL, offensively. Most fans don’t do well at realizing the intangibles a player brings to the court if they aren’t scoring points. But there is a reason Alstork and TJL are still starters. Great defense, distributing the basketball, and being leaders of the team. If we get them to hit some shots and the team plays with a purpose, I think we win by 10-12.

I remember Groce saying the same exact things about Cosby when everyone was worried about his shooting. The intangibles are important but we will probably need Alstork to score if we're going to be a good team.

Playing time and starters are two different issues. Need to see players in crunch time. May have that opportunity this week. Need to stop measuring best players by offensive numbers.

I think we are in agreement.

With regard to measuring players beyond offensive numbers; Kipper and Aaron have been our best in almost every advanced metric.

I'm excluding the end of the bench players for the stats listed below.

Per 40 Minutes:
Pts: Kipper #1, AJ #2
Reb: Kipper #1, AJ #2
Ast: Kipper #8, AJ #9
Stl: AJ #2, Kipper #5
Blk: Kipper #1, AJ #4
Tov: (fewest): AJ #2, Kipper #4

Per 100 Possessions:
Offensive Rating: AJ #1, Kipper #3
Defensive Rating: AJ #1, Kipper #2

Advanced:
PER: AJ #1, Kipper #2
eFG%: AJ #1, Kipper #4
TS%: AJ #1, Kipper #4
WS/40: AJ #1, Kipper #2
OBPM: AJ #1, Kipper #4
DBPM: AJ #3, Kipper #6
BPM: AJ #1, Kipper #4

I understand that AJ and Kipper's productivity has probably benefited from playing against some our cupcakes bench players, so these numbers don't mean much right now.

But if they keep it up over our next 3 games (Wake, NW, Maryland)...

I don’t think it’s this game, but the more BU talks, the more I think Aaron starts at some point this year.

Pretty lame, but this is a snippet from Borzello's write-up on the challenge

Danny Manning and the Demon Deacons are struggling to start the season, losing four of their first six games -- while Brad Underwood has won his first six games in Champaign. For Wake Forest to right the ship, Bryant Crawford needs to take care of the ball, which isn't always easy against Illinois' pressure.

Wake Forest 85, Illinois 78

Wake hasn't scored 85 points in any of their games yet this season. What makes Borzello think that they will light up Illinois?

Weird.

We've built some serious benefit of the doubt deficit over the last several years. Hoping this is the year all that changes.

True. But there’s a difference in a coach saying it about a player and us seeing it with our own eyes from multiple players.

I read the ogforum (for some reason) and thought it was funny someone responded to a post saying we have a 9 man regular rotation was because our starters might not be that good. Haha! It couldn't possibly be because we have a lot of talented players and we play a fast-paced style so we rotate out to stay fresh while wearing the other team down.

This is the first real test the team gets. Might be a reality check for us.

This is the first real test for this team, but I hope our reality check was a couple weeks ago in Charleston

Weird.

Probably just reflecting the nature of a higher tempo with more possessions, not necessarily lighting us up. :illinois:

Tempo should be in our favor. Good guard play, staying out of foul trouble, and some timely perimeter shooting is our recipe for a win. Our 9man should wear them down, as I think we do many this year. Black and Finke need to play safe aggressive, defense.

Illinois by double-digits.

WF hasn't faced a defense of our caliber, and our offense has improved a little bit with each game. It will be close at the half, but we will pull away at the end.

"fun" little tid-bit : according to Kenpom, Illinois is the 4th-worst undefeated team (out of 28) and Wake Forest is the 4th-best 4-loss team.

Do with that what you will....which should be nothing. This was a meaningless post.

IMO - gonna come down to fouls on the frontline. Whoever manages their fouls better will win.

I'm a little surprised that we are an underdog. I expected something like UI -2. Wake's results have been horrendous this year. If we hadn't played the eastern game, we might have laid the egg we layed in that game tonight. Hopefully playing that game helps us avoid it. Very much looking forward to seeing the team against a higher level of competition.

We may not be the best team in the world but the wake forest board is beyond delusional

The big comeback win to get to the final four is mine!

While I agree AFTER the fact, that game almost gave us all heart attacks! I had the biggest pit in my stomach for most of it. The Wake game (and UL Final Four game that often gets forgotten about!) were just pure fun the whole time.
