Illini has double duty today. Quash the dread in my heart ❤ before this game and lift the misery of first warm weather flu I get every year. All it takes is a win!

Kellogg and Barkley taking Chattanooga - basically jumping on the double digit theme from yesterday
Barkley hasn't seen illinois play a game all year I'd almost gurantee it. I don't like these NBA guys covering the tourney. Its so obvious to me they are just making it up as they go most the time. They don't watch college basketball. Now I respect Kellogg, he takes it seriously.

Always thought Barks a-lot-to be a fool.

Barkley is a joke

Watching the Chattanooga v Furman game highlights from their conference championship. Big thing that stands out defensively is that Furman repeatedly got the ball in to the short corner and sent a cutter from opposite elbow. Chattanooga gave up at least four baskets in the first five minutes off of this situation. Getting Kofi the ball in that position should open the lane for attacking slashers. Also, Furman had to double SD in the post, leaving Chattanooga guards open, which we will not.

As always, spacing will be important. Chattanooga will change coverage on side ball screen defense and occasionally trap and deny immediately after the screen (see around the 13:00 min mark).
They are one of the worst 2 pt D’s in the country. We need ball screens and drivers. Hawk can have a field day. Also, Melendez and Belo will be able to get to the rim. If we finish at the rim, we will win by 20.

Agreed, I absolutely hate that they have guys who don't watch the sport covering it. There's an army of studio dorks who are at least decent and follow the game that they could bring in instead.

The person whose idea to synchronize the pyro effects and Kofi slamming a sledge hammer at the same time is an odd genius.

Barkley is going to show Kofi some love. He is old school.

They're fine. Harmless. We follow this stuff all the time, they're trying to lend overall expertise to a tournament they only know on the periphery.

It's OK for pundits to pick against us. Just take care of our business, and the accolades will come.

Barkley has no clue. I have Big winning all games today. So far, so good.

I don't care who picks what. I guess I was more talking about their knowledge level. It bothers me more when they do analyisis and you can tell they have never heard of the player they are talking about before 5 minutes ago.,

Westwood 1 has exclusive radio rights. You just have to find a station who syndicates WW1
I dislike this. All season long we get the home coverage and when the season hits its zenith, we get a WW1 team that only knows generic storylines and not the real team. Money rules it all.

I like the way Jim Nance covers games. He talks about the game in front of him and not what his grandmother made for Thanksgiving dinner last year or not the constant focus on one coach or another and not the constant search for the saddest, most maudlin story of pathos about some player or his mother or his grade school teacher. Nance seems to cover the game at hand, does it well and even leaves some air time without constantly, relentlessly talking. His coverage seems to actually appreciate basketball. I also like Robbie Hummel and Trent Meacham and wish they had a more national place in b'ball coverage. At least we don't have to hear Dacitch (sp) this year. Dreading future years when we have to hear retired "saint coach K" all the time. The mute button on the remote is a handy thing.

Nice gesture by Brad to let him travel with team. Hopefully he gives him NCAA championship ring as well!

Someone do some research. Are there more upsets on Thursday than Friday? Seeing an upset of a high seed is good motivation to not take anyone lightly. So go ahead and get on that, I'm going to go drink.
Welp ... turns out that from 2011 to 2019, top 5 seeds actually had a better record in the First Round on Thursdays (.854) than on Fridays (.786) ... lol.

For anyone in Chicago that wants to pick up some merch before the game, there's a Campus Ink pop-up store located at 2040 N Halsted. Just stopped by to pick up a Kofi jersey. 30-50% of the sales go to NIL!

I'm not one to jinx (and I'm obviously nervous), but I am feeling good. I think the IU loss could be a blessing in disguise, and I think this team is ready to exorcise some demons. I believe in the law of averages, and frankly Illini basketball probably has one of the biggest disparities between consistent, high-level success in the regular season and what we have to show for it in March Madness. It's OUR turn to break through and be that 4-seed that goes on a run. Want proof?? :ROFLMAO:

ILLINI PERFORMANCE AS A 4-SEED
2006:
Second Round loss vs. (5) Washington
2003: Second Round loss to (5) Notre Dame
2002: Sweet Sixteen loss to (1) Kansas
2000: Second Round loss to (5) Florida
1986: Second Round loss to (5) Alabama
1981: Sweet Sixteen loss to (5) Wyoming ... smaller Tournament back then.

It seems a 4- or 5-seed goes on a deep run almost every year, and it's HIGH TIME a stroke of luck comes our way. :) Looking back at our 27 NCAAT appearances since they started seeding teams, we have hardly EVER gotten a stroke of luck to outperform our seed (I'm assuming a 1-seed is "supposed to" make the Final Four, a 2-seed is "supposed to" make the Elite Eight, etc.):

Overperformed: 2 ... 2004 (Sweet Sixteen as a 5) and 2011 (Second Round as a 9)...
Met Expectations: 12
Underperformed: 11

IT'S. OUR. TIME. And it starts tonight!

P.S. I found this interesting. These are the most frequent seeds we have had since 1981 (our first appearance when they started seeding teams):

4-seed: 6 times
1-seed: 4 times
5-seed: 4 times
3-seed: 3 times
6-seed: 2 times
7-seed: 2 times
2-seed: 1 time
8-seed: 1 time
9-seed: 1 time
11-seed: 1 time
12-seed: 1 time

I think that kind of shows that when we're good, we're good. Lol. None of this always being an 8- to 10-seed or anything.

Regardless of how this Mocs game plays out... it’s critical that Coach finds some good minutes for the Young Guys. On-floor experience in the tournament environment is priceless. If the Young Guys have some success, their confidence will swell. If they struggle, they will work harder in the future to being their game to this level of play and pressure.

Somewhere... somehow... find some tick time for the young Orange and Blues. And this also serves as good advertisement for the Illini program to younger guys considering where to take their talent.

‘Hey, you see the Illini game? They’re not afraid to play first year guys...’

And you never know. One of the Young Illini might just be the guy to make a play that was the difference maker in the game.
