Illini will have the height advantage as they grab more rebounds/game than FAU; however, FAU has the steals/game advantage. Must protect the ball.

Outside of their center, ever other starter is between 6’-0” and 6’-4”. Think we should have Quincy, TSJ, and TR
relentless attack the rim (within framework of offense). Maybe get their center in foul trouble, too. Then own the boards on both ends. Make bully ball the order of the day.
This could be just the game for Quincy to dominate.

I think they're going to need to bully them in order to win.

Also, it would be huge for Coleman to knock down a few shots and drag that 7 footer away from the basket. Think you could also try playing Quincy as a small ball 5 where you might sacrifice some size on the defensive end but should be able to put FAU in some impossible spots trying to cover the perimeter.

I mean I get it but still can't you fly him out for the Jimmy V? Feel like it would be a cool experience even just to be in MSG.
The amount of walking you do around the city wouldn't be great if you were nursing a hurt foot. Add in crappy weather, I imagine the risk doesn't outweigh the rewards. IMO this speaks volumes to how important the staff thinks he might be down the road. If he was just going to ride the bench the rest of the year, he comes with the team, cause there's no rush to get him back.

Sorry but if Illinois is as good as I keep seeing everyone say we are in this forum, they should beat FAU and it really shouldn't be that close.

FAU is the #11 team in the country, brought everyone back from a F4 team. I haven't seen anyone say we are a better team. In fact, in the form of hot takes, I've mostly seen these two posts:

"We don't have a PG so we have no chance"

and

"If we have 17 turnovers again we will lose by 20"

I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who was kind of putt off by Dauster on the IlliniInquirer podcast and how much he seemed to come across as an FAU homer. But for a national college media guy he seemed generally pretty uninformed about our team…

1. Said our starting lineup is “a bunch of 6’6” guys and Dainja” (DD is coming off the bench, minor, but still)
2. Predicted we’d go 1-1 in the stretch but also thought the ILL-TENN game on Saturday would be in Champaign
3. His answer to the question of “how does FAU handle Illinois’ defense?” was something along the lines of “FAU won’t be afraid of the bright lights because they’ve been here before”

I don’t expect him to come on a podcast and be an Illini expert, but it felt like he spent hours reviewing FAU film and kind of took Illinois as an afterthought. More reason to win
Yeah I mean at minimum, know the starting lineup before going on a podcast with their beat writer. God forbid you take it a step further and watch like 20 minutes of tape.

If they try to man press, wouldn't we just have Hawkins bring the ball up since his man can't defend like that?
Haven’t read whole thread, so maybe someone said this, but if they’re pressing I highly doubt the center will be guarding CH all over the court. He’d likely still be back and switch on to CH when ball in front court. Now Illini might be able to take advantage before “switch back” is made, but center won’t be pressing.

This team definitely has a different vibe to it this year. I don't see this team getting punked like we did against Penn St. & Mizzou or anyone for that matter. I'm not saying we won't lose games, but I don't think this team will completely forget to show up. The toughness we had against Rutgers had a different feel to it than any Underwood team I can recall.

Still remember when they came into our own arena a few years back and beat us. We owe them big time. Statement time

I forgot about that game, so it was fun to look up the box score. Ayo with 21 and Aaron Jordan with 20. I forgot Ayo played with him and Kipper.

There’s so many matchups in this game I can’t wait to see but overall I still really like how we match up with them.

Quincy will probably guard Weatherspoon. Quincy isn’t great on the perimeter but it doesn’t look like Weatherspoon is a volume shooter. Not sure 6’4 185 can check 6’8 220 or keep him off the glass.

Marcus will have to be on his game to prevent open 3’s but I don’t think they have anyone to defend him in the post.

Dain is taller, thicker, longer and has better post moves that Rosado.

Davis and Martin are big, strong athletes. Ty and Terrance are bigger and stronger and athletic.

Biggest question marks to me are Coleman vs Goldin. Coleman usually does a good job of keeping guys like Goldin off of their spots, but not sure Coleman is 100%. But even if Goldin wins that matchup and goes for 25, think we still win if we limit their 3 pt attempts. Plus, I’m not counting on it but it’s not out of the question Coleman is left wide open and drills 5 3’s.

Greenlee is a smaller, quicker guard and he might give us some problems. But he’s not a volume shooter either.

They are a really good team and wouldn’t shock me if they win but overall I like the matchups.

I tend to agree. I think the floor is higher, and there's still some upside.

I didn't have a problem with the field68 guy's comments, but I viewed it through the lens of someone taking the FAU side of things for sake of analysis. If they do in fact have a couple future pros, then they have plenty of talent. And if FAU deserves the hype, then it adds to the game --win, and you beat a FF caliber team.

We need to be in their face on 3s. Can't let them do what Penn St and Mizzou did last year.

All good questions about matchups. Conversely, who guards Quincy? Weatherspoon is 6'-4" , 185 lbs. Quincy is 6'-8", 220 lbs. Feed him on the low blocks and Weatherspoon is a bug on the windshield.

Come on. We did NOT beat Kansas.
Are you sayingg that wasn’t a game? The only way that wasn’t a game is that it didn’t “count.” The only way it wasn’t a game is the no fouling out. Otherwise it was a I dive on the floor slugfest. There was too much on the line otherwise.

From what I've seen their press is mostly token full court man (picking up the pg full, but everyone else dropping back) so I don't think they are trying to get into rotations that early in possessions. I also haven't watched too much of them, so maybe sometimes they up the pressure and I just haven't seen it.
