Things I learned about houston when we were able to tour their facilities with our team in December.

1) straight man, help only when necessary defense. They put A LOT of emphasis on winning your 1v1 defensive matchup. Some defenses funnel to help by design, they do not.

2) There are 2 times they break that rule. They will push players to their off hand in pick and roll situations and they also double the post on all catches. They then scramble out of the double back to their base principles.

3) Their personnel focus in the scout is the best player, and the player who has been hot coming into the game. Knowing that, my guess is they key on Kofi and Hawkins. They don’t want your top dog to beat them or your guy who has been playing well lately.

4) From a scheme standpoint they’ll go over your 10 favorite actions from any situation. My guess is they’ll cover the weave, the cross screen high-low, and the baseline OBs where we screen the screener to get Plummer 3 pt looks. I know we’ve been good on ATOs and have some other BLOB looks we go with, but idk how much scheme they can really cover in a one day prep.

5) Offensively they want to shoot within the first 20 seconds of the shot clock. Samscum thinks if you don’t shoot by then you end up with hero ball beat the shot clock shots that are much lower percentage than you get in the first 20 seconds.

6) They send 4 to the offensive glass at all times. Even if they know a team wants to push, they don’t care. They take the trade off because they think they win more with offensive rebounds than they lose in transition points. I assume this will be doubly true vs us, because we don’t play super fast, and they will want to put pressure on kofi and hawk to defensive rebound, and our guards to consistently box out.

If I think of more I’ll make another post.
I’ve started this a good 2-3 only to get distracted….

This IS a pretty nifty breakdown! It’ll be cool going into this matchup feeling like we got a window into
KS’s coaching philosophy.( I almost feel like we should be paying for your analysis. Lol good stuff.) Lucky for us, you were able to infiltrate the enemy’s lair. 👿

Like other’s have said: Houston sending four dudes to the offensive glass with reckless abandon is the thing that really has me the most concerned. We don’t see that kind of organized relentlessness often. AND frankly my belief in our ability to counter/ thwart their onslaught
just ain’t what it once was. It’s no secret at this point…our over-all effort, and our communication & connectivity comes and goes like the Santa Anna wins. (See what I did there? Texas Reference.) Also * FUN FACT: A regiment for Illinois captured Santa Anna’s leg….

Anyway, these lapses of ours frustrate me. I know…know…injuries>changing line-ups>
making it hard to have consistent team chemistry…sure I s’pose. But enough of that.

This IS March. This IS a veteran team. Rebounding WAS a BIG part of our identity, AND we’re talking about something that IS overwhelmingly an effort and focus thing.
We need to get it done and go down swinging if we’re goin’ down.

Does Houston like to Blitz ball screens?

Man the player interviews were tough to watch with that line of questioning. How many different ways can you say wow you guys kinda sucked at this that or the other, some people don’t like how you play, how does that make you feel, and how are you gonna fix it… It took 13 minutes for a positive question to finally pop up asking what CoHawk brings. Geez.
This reminds me, I liked CH's answer in the post-game presser when he was asked if his block was the biggest play of his life or something, and he was just kinda like, "nah, just a bball play."

Also, BU's UH-preview presser is excellent.

I feel confident about this game for some reason. Both these games strike me as having a B10 feel to them... which I personally feel better about than, say, playing teams with some quirk like ++3pt FG%, weird zone D, back-door ya to death offense, etc.

Lace 'em up, play hard, hit shots, win... we're B10 champs for chrissake!

Sounds like standard issue Michigan State. I've always said MSU's entry pass is a missed shot.

I’m sure they have it in the bag for certain situations, but from what I was told, no. I asked it specifically because I was gonna ask what they do, how they rotate etc (because my HS team blitzes ball screens as our base p/r defense).

They like to make people use their off hand in p/r scenarios because they feel ball handlers make worse decisions they are when forced weak.

9-15 is not really a good enough sample size to suggest he will always hit at a high clip.

DMW can shoot the ball extremely well, especially when left open. He needs to get over the jitters and start shooting. Everyone on here dogs him because for 3 years he was afraid to shoot the ball. Last year I was hoping would be a bit of a breakout year for him confidence wise, but he has regressed a tad. No reason he can’t light it up again and we wI’ll need him to shoot the ball if we are going to have a chance. When he shoots in volume he shoots so much better - made half as many 3s as Melendez has all season in a single game…. (4-10). I don’t know where this narrative started that DMW can’t shoot comes from, but he definitely CAN shoot and can hit 3s at a very good rate. Wish people would take a moment to judge him by more than a missed shot every so often or his lack of confidence resulting in not shooting. Once he’s not in the flow of the offense, then he’s right to not shoot. He’s a guy that does well IN RHYTHM. So kick out from the post and shoot he will be fine. He struggles when he starts thinking.
He doesn’t shoot if anyone is close to him
He struggles if he shoots Anything other than a set shot / jump shot
He struggles dribbling especially in traffic or going to the hoop

He is a good defender
He is a tough kid
He does things to help the team succeed - things not always in the stat book.

I don't know why he isn't a better ft shooter.

His put back dunks can be awesome...
I wish BU would give him green light to crash off boards all the time

It is going to be a very difficult battle here on out

Guards, especially, need to perform at a very level.

Kofi needs to make passes.

4) what do you think “our best 5 man lineup” is? And are you talking best overall or best offensively?
I think it's best to be purposefully vague about something like this. I'm am convinced that whatever Coach Underwood decides is our best 5 man lineup, 50% of us will disagree.

Agreed. Our back court isn't as strong or deep as we'd like. That makes for a tuff run. Our passing struggles to approach average. We have starters afraid to take a shot or finish that drive to the basket. We need to stop worrying about the game and just play it. Relax, focus, have some fun, and attack. It's the big dance! Enjoy it! You give it your all and if you're behind when time expires, you should be able to live with that.

I'm not confident about tomorrow's game, but it should be an interesting and challenging match up for Illinois. For a win, we need to shoot closer to 50% overall, stay close to even with Houston in total rebounding, and limit our turnovers. I think we will need to get back to the team we saw earlier this season, and we should be competitive with Houston. Our defense should be fine, I'm more worried about defensive rebounding and blocking out.

our defense doing well and other teams shooting poorly often go hand-in-hand. I think the Illini D yesterday was stellar.
EDIT: I clearly didn't read your second sentence.
I believe Chat took 18 more shots

That particular question at Curbelo was really below board IMO.
