You can scheme whatever you want... If your players don't execute it won't change much. The scheme was fine earlier in the season... We have just been making too many mistakes.
The guys seem content to try to outscore the other team rather than take pride in the little things on defense.
I understand what you are saying, but what do we hold a head coach responsible for?

But according to Brad "no one gets tired" and there in lies the problem doesn't it? He has repeatedly shot that down when I think, at least from watching the film, it's pretty obvious some guys could use a break.
I was bored at work, so I ran the numbers for the past eight games (starting with at NW)

FG% First 30 Mins
FG% Last 10 Mins (+ OT)
Domask51.3%46.0%
Hawkins49.2%38.9%
Shannon48.2%32.4% 👀

Draw your own conclusions.

3. On that note and most importantly for Saturday ... we lost our 5-game winning streak over rival Iowa last February in a really hard-fought loss in Iowa City. That should piss these guys off enough to want revenge, but we also have not lost to Iowa in Champaign since BU and staff turned this program around (i.e., our last loss in Champaign was way back in 2019).
Sorry Fighter but I am still in a lousy basketball mood and therefore I can't buy into this thinking. After being humiliated 3 times in one season last year by Penn State, our game against them this week should have been the epitome of what you describe above. The only person who looked this way was TSJ.

And I will somewhat exempt those who were not even here last year, which is no small part of our team given our portal moves. I say somewhat because I still expect some base level of wanting to win and giving the effort needed to do so.

Other than that, I see no reason why one loss last year to Iowa would fire up this team if the recent Penn State history did not.

I’m not superstitious either, but I may or may not have burned the blue Illinois t-shirt that I was wearing for the Michigan state and Penn state games (true story).

Is that praising Luke, or damning the rest of the team...
Something LaTulip noticed is that it looks like Luke is so focused on sticking with his assignment on some possessions that he totally loses track of what's going on around him (including obvious help opportunities). This might be partially due to a fear that you will be immediately benched if you blow your assignment. So players are becoming "selfish" defenders at the cost of our overall team D.

Constantly playing out of a fear of being benched is a trickier issue to address.

And Underwood says that TSJ played unbelievable defense so obviously he hasn't watched the MLT video.
TSJ is just worn out.

Watch the LaTulip video and see if your opinion changes. The issues that are plaguing our defense right now are fixable. They are obvious and they make a huge difference.
Loved the LaTulip video. But that's the thing. Most of the stuff he pointed out is obvious. Communication, effort, sprinting back on defense, see ball see man. And this isn't to say his breakdown wasn't enlightening. But it's not hard to see what we're doing wrong. It is hard for me to understand why we can't fix it.

Any bets on MLT becoming our next defensive bball coordinator?

I'm with you. It's bewildering. I'll pile on here and add that I simply don't understand why, when one of the guys is trapped, the nearest teammate doesn't move toward him. "Go to the ball" is b-ball 101, as is (for a guard) never picking up your dribble when guarded unless you have no choice and are about to be trapped. And yet I see it all the time with us. Oh, and failing when trapped to look down court for the outlet before doing anything else.

OK, now I'm grumpy again.

Definitely an indictment on the rest of the team but also shed some light for me why Goode is getting that tick. Honestly deserves it with what Harmon and Quincy were doing. His breakdown really put the focus on where the breakdowns are happening and how each player has been responsible.

I did too…and I agree.
Although mostly straightforward observations, I feel like it did a good job of highlighting some things.

My own takeaways and crackpot theories:

1.) Brad should have listened to Indy and hired LaTulip. He would have checked a lot of boxes. Would have been a huge asset to this program. But Mike must definitely be some kind of masochist for watching that WHOLE game like 4-5 times. Yikes! (Or just good at his job.)

2.) We have complete & consistent coverage confusion…but why are we suddenly so overwhelmed? Its as if we’ve
got multiple defensive schemes happening at once on every other play. Fairly obvious that it’s lack of communication and effort…
Why so much confusion?

But his film does a nice job of highlighting
it…ex. Domask icing/forcing baseline and Coleman in high, wrong-side 3-quarter deny in the post…not good…and a ton of other examples like that I could mention.

3.) The effort level is trending in the wrong direction. Not good. I love this team. I do not want to fall out of love with them. I’m vulnerable dammit!

( I cannot take another off the rails end like last year. Don’t they know what they have? Don’t squander this… )

4.)We went(defensively( from to # 2 to # 140…? Is that right? WOW. Damn.
