There was an interesting discussion on this board a while back where everyone was discussing rivals and how who you viewed as Illinois’ main rival was dependent on what era and what part of the state you grew up in. I grew up in the metro east and was raised to dislike all things Mizzou and the Indiana schools but Iowa has always just been another team on the schedule. I imagine there’s a correlation between people's anxiety level and how highly they rank Iowa as rival.
As a native of the Quad Cities and lifelong Illinois fan under those conditions, I can barely eat today I’m so anxious.

my hate is more aimed at bruce pearl than iowa, but i still don’t like them!
(and growing up i vaguely remember lou and knight not liking each other, so i always thought iu was a rival, but they’re always quick to say they don’t think of us as a rival. they stink now so who cares.)

That's a funny story, I can tell you I was at whatever they call the Rosemont Horizon these days a couple of weeks ago for Monster Jam with my buddy's son's, and I am happy to confirm that the facility has absolutely not been upgraded in any way.
That night, the Rosemont Horizon lived up to what Bruce Springsteen and his fans used to call the old L.A. Sports Arena: "The Dump That Jumps."

I will say it’s been a breath of fresh air this tournament not playing teams that flop as a strategy. The big ten had gotten so bad it was sickening.

In regards to Wagler, no doubt he’s not getting a whistle on his drives, but Ive come to conclude he just isn’t good at finishing at the rim against big men- he would be much better served pulling up for a fade away jumper using his length when he penetrates and there are bodies in his way. He’s gotten into a habit of just throwing himself in there hoping for a foul and he’s not explosive enough to finish
When they do show a replay of Waglers drive he is fouled right as he starts it half the time. He is continually being held up and grabbed at the beginning let alone the missed calls at the basket. There was a play last night were he was fouled by two players as he went between them 15ft from the basket and then again when he got to the rim. Literally fouled three times on one drive. Fortunately a foul was called when he got to the basket. This is what he has to put up with every game.

My niece's baptism is tomorrow at 4:30... may have to fake a medical event or something 😭
Saw Larry the Cable Guy last summer. Has a great line. Has a great line. You know, I was going, but I’ve got Covid!

There was also a Hook and Hold by Wagler at the end that made things dicey. The Hook and Hold craziness seems to have gone away, hasn't it? 👏
I guess you didn't watch Purdue vs Texas.

Oh sh$t, apparently my brother thinks I have a harder shoe decision than I thought.
Maybe I should do a gameday shoe thread!
🤣

It would be incredibly disheartening to get this far and then get knocked out by Iowa. I know Iowa has had a great tourney and the regular season means zilch right now, but their season was pedestrian. Only one difficult non-conference game was on the schedule, Iowa State, who they play every year. And not many Big Ten wins to get excited about.

I won’t say I’m not happy with catching Iowa in the final eight but after last nights game, I wouldn’t be afraid if Florida was still around. This team looked so locked in, something I don’t think we’ve seen over the last month or so.

I grew up IN Iowa City as an Illini fan, and I even grew up this way because Iowa was so meh and Illinois was always good. I always loved Braggin’ Rights and was vaguely aware of the Indiana history, so I thought of those as our real rivals.

However, that changed in 2020. The renewed bad blood with Iowa put everything in perspective for me, and it really highlighted that this is by FAR our most mutual rivalry. Mizzou clearly thinks of us as a rival, but they’ll always choose KU #1. Indiana likes to SCREAM that we aren’t a rival as if that rejection affords them some status LMAO, but I’ve heard honest IU fans admit it is one, lol. Northwestern would absolutely put us up there, but they’d be way down our list.

Iowa has other rivals, but we’d have the highest percentage of both fan bases putting each other at #1. As one Iowa fan said on their message board yesterday, some of the younger fans might have been hyped about a rivalry game with Nebraska on Thursday, but there has only ever been one eternal rival - Illinois.

Enjoyed that game last night immensely! Will say the ft shooting was making me and just about every Illini fan around me nervous!
I have been hard on BU all yr and have questioned this teams toughness. Last night their toughness was clear! They took it to Houston from get go. Played em hard and very tough. BUs adjustment on the defense, especially, has been awesome. I dont think Houston had 5 shots go up uncontested with a defender in their face! Much better than that stupid drop coverage crap they were playing.
I'm enjoying this run and BU deserves credit no doubt. I gotta be honest though, if they lose to Iowa I dont think that would be forgivable. I hate Iowa and couldnt stomach losing to them. So lets not lose...Go Illini to the Final Four!!!

As for both Teams...

Forget the regular season records. Forget what happened yesterday. None of that earns You one single point in the game coming up. Forget history. Any team that gets this far has proven it is a team good enough to GET THIS FAR. And if you are such a team, you just might be one that can go all the way.

Don’t even look at the name or colors on the other jersey. It doesn’t matter. They are just somebody that is rudely standing in your way from where You want to go. That’s all the matters to You. And you need to do something about that.

One Game. One limited set of possessions. One eventual final outcome from all those many trips up and down the floor and infinities of outcomes from multiple human beings in motion. A blizzard from which some kind order arises from some percentage of chaos.

Hopefully you bring your best both mentally and physically. Because whatever happens... both sides will live with the results of this game for the rest of their lives.

And so will we. The beauty of March Madness that brings Sanity for One and Sadness for all the rest.
What an AWESOME post. Beautiful way to look at it.
