I truly think they’ll struggle to score with us.

Here is how we score offensively (in no particular order)

1. TSJ in transition
2. Domask Bootyball, at times Ty
3. Princeton Point stuff with Coleman reading
4. Old Kofi post-up sets and high lows for Dain
5. That lob for Quincy
6. Shannon stagger reads from right corner
7. More recently, Coleman as the handler in P/Rs

It’s not crazy complicated, but the effective looks we can throw at a team are rather varied. So however you chose to guard us, we pick from that list the one we think you guard the worst. The simplicity is what makes it effective, because it makes it about the players. We have the top 2 on the court imo.

I don’t know if we’ve seen a defense like isu, but idk that they’ve seen an offense as versatile as ours. I truly think we will be able to score enough that they start pressing on offense and we’ll be able to separate. I think our guys have confidence that at least one big scoring explosion is coming every game. If we can defend respectably, one burst might be enough, and hopefully lead to a second one if isu gets out of character offensively.

Baylor is a solid comp to Illinois over the course of the season and Iowa State went 1-1 losing by 2 after a buzzer beater got waived off (correctly) in Waco and winning by 14 in the Big 12 tournament. For the record I think Illinois is playing better now than they have all year, and Iowa State is playing their best basketball of the season currently (minus the first 8 minutes of ISU's game Saturday) so this should be, in my opinion, the best game of the weekend. Contrasting styles is always fun to watch.
This take is so much more reasonable than the guy who was posting here from Duquesne the other day.

No one is underestimating Iowa state. Your fanbase is doing that way more than we are, took a look at the cyclone board and yikes
Seriously. I went over to their board to see if they had similar complaints about the start time, and instead I saw quite a bit of shlt talking … I even saw a screenshot of my post with some taking my suggestion Illini fans had better access to major airports seriously. 🤣🤣 A few gems:

1. Scoffed at us having better tradition. Let’s just keep the all-time comparison brief (as it’s not even close) and say we have FIVE times as many Final Fours as them, and they haven’t been back since before WWII ended. In the last 5 years, we also have the same or better stats than them in every metric.

2. TONS of totally deluded comments about our fan following, with one fan allegedly not knowing Illinois “even had fans.” 🤣🙄 Bro, even fan bases that hate us and would have nothing nice to say about the Illini wouldn’t say something this incompatible with reality. There’s also no reasonable metric to use to suggest ISU has more fans than Illinois. Lower average attendance, smaller social media followings, smaller alumni base, smaller state (in which they’re dominated by Iowa), etc. I saw the usual know-nothing line about our supposedly poor following in Chicago (I just have to chuckle at this bizarre myth anymore as a Chicagoan), but one fan even suggested that we have no following DOWNSTATE and that in 2005 when we made the Championship run, “no one in IL cared.” Show me you have ZERO idea what you’re talking about…

3. On a similar note, one fan was unimpressed with how few fans we brought to Omaha with it being such a “short drive.” For one, there was a more-than-decent Illini presence. But two … a SHORT drive?? Bro needs a map. 😂

I had no problem with Iowa State. We never play them, and a mutual hatred of Iowa certainly endeared them to me a bit. However, they seem to have a misplaced sense of arrogance. They very well might beat us, and I’ll consider it a loss to a good team … but there is a DECIDED lack of respect for not just our team but our program in general that necessitates at the very least a little ignorance. Let’s send them packing.

Lol. Thats crazy for anyone from Duquesne to talk crap. Duquesne was lucky they weren't on the 13 line and that they played BYU, who is a fine team, but would be a Wisconsin comp. I didnt want ISU to see them because we had them twice and BYU was just a horrible matchup for Iowa State if they were hitting 3s, but maybe they are just a bad matchup for anyone when they play at home.

The most enjoyable line: "You might squeeze out a win, but win or lose I think you'll be impressed with the Dukes. Dukes would punk Penn State or Rutgers the way they're playing right now."

Growing up south of the south suburbs of Chicago, I was generally unaware of U of Illinois unless it was an outstanding season. No family connections and I was much more into pro sports. I remember them wheeling in a tv to watch the elite 8 run when I was in JH and of course 2005 when I was in HS. Moved to Ames and married into a Cyclone family, and with basically no college connections other than that, latched onto ISU. I now consider Illinois my second college team, especially when they play Iowa

I was also surprised at how they saw their program almost as royalty compared to ours. They are a great team and I have no beef with them but for a team that isn’t too far removed from a 2-22 record the !!!! talk was strong. They have had more sweet 16s this decade so I’ll give them credit there but we now have the coach we need to string more together.

As a side note there’s even a whole thread about how awful our board is! Lot of haters. You do a great job here Dan!

IMO TBS got the much better pair of games. I guess CBS expects higher ratings with North Carolina and Arizona, assuming they had the first selection rights.

This Iowa state team is legit. I was court side for all games Thursday and Saturday. I will say it’s going to take a complete game to beat them. I will also say their fan base reminds me of the Hawkeye fan base. I was 2 rows behind the WSU bench on Saturday and the F bombs directed at the college athletes by a multitude of ISU fans was ridiculous. I didn’t have a horse in the race so I was just in observation mode and most all of them around me were top level obnoxious. I’m sure comparing the Iowa state fans to the Iowa fans won’t go over well, but if you’ve ever been to an Iowa/Illinois game at Carver you know what I’m talking about. In defense of the ISU fan base this is based on a small sample size of a couple of games.

Soooo Iowa St. - Shoot 3s and play D? I didn't see a lot of offense other than scramble 3s and 1 on 1 takes.
I desperately want TSJ to transition early and loosen this game up then Dain Coleman and Domask to ride hard. A few Goode 3s and we move on.

No on the 3s yes on the D. 305th in the country in 3s attempted per game. Most points are in the paint and in transition off turnovers. Will make teams play patient, and has dictated pace in most games. Generally will run the clock to below 10 while on offense.
