This Iowa state team is legit. I was court side for all games Thursday and Saturday. I will say it’s going to take a complete game to beat them. I will also say their fan base reminds me of the Hawkeye fan base. I was 2 rows behind the WSU bench on Saturday and the F bombs directed at the college athletes by a multitude of ISU fans was ridiculous. I didn’t have a horse in the race so I was just in observation mode and most all of them around me were top level obnoxious. I’m sure comparing the Iowa state fans to the Iowa fans won’t go over well, but if you’ve ever been to an Iowa/Illinois game at Carver you know what I’m talking about. In defense of the ISU fan base this is based on a small sample size of a couple of games.
Everyone at Sweet Sixteen is legit, and seeding doesn’t mean a thing.

Man, you all are wimps. You can't stay up until midnight one time and still function the next day? I mean, I can't do it for days on end like I used to, but one day?

Once again the NCAA is giving the Illini NO RESPECT! Scheduled to play the last game while their tentative next opponent plays the first game. The scheduling is nuts and the so-called TV appearances on CBS will broadcast will include North Carolina and Duke! No bias here folks. CBS use to be #1 with programming but as you search their current programming they totally stink!

At this point, it's the Sweet Sixteen. We've waited 19 years. If you've suffered through all the lows this program has produced over those years you've undoubtedly lost way, way more sleep due to our poor play. It's worth having a late coffee, changing your schedule, and figuring it out.

For us ET folks, this is probably closer to a 10:30pm tip. This one’s got OT potential. It could be an especially late one, but you’re right. I, for one, will be wetting my whistle during this game. I’ll be looking rough on Friday with a headache. I’ll be a suggestion of an employee, at best. But hopefully with a !!!! eating ear-to-ear grin and that’s all matters, 2am be damned :)

For the insiders a question. Does Loren Tate have a beef with Underwood? On the cusp of one of the greatest seasons ever, the 92-year old News-Gazette scribe drudged up some old criticisms of Underwood in today's column for no apparent reason.

I will say this-I know UConn is very good, but whoever wins this regional for the Final Four berth will earn it. This is a heavyweight group, and everyone’s playing really well. This regional is what NCAA tournament basketball is supposed to feel like, and I love it.

If Illinois does get to the Final Four, no one can talk about flukes, low seeded draws, etc. They will have proven it in the court if it happens.

Hopefully the guys are adjusting their sleep schedules a bit. Especially anyone like TSJ who is used to getting up at 4:30 to get to the gym - I’m guessing he’s normally in bed by the time this game is scheduled to start.

~ 10:30 tip ET? I'll cope.

I'm truly excited. We're back in the S16 where we belong, we're playing a very strong opponent, we have a marvelous team and this should be an absolute thriller start-to-finish. Win or lose I'm just (1) jacked that the Illini are a part of this; (2) relieved that we can reasonably look forward to subsequent seasons of similar success via BU's assembly and coaching of our teams; and (3) grateful for what we've enjoyed this season, particularly the past six games after Purdue when these guys have turned it up to 11.

LAD Thursday night, lads and ladies! Gonna be sweet to be a part of it! :illinois:

Looking at rebound statistics gives me some more optimism. As efficient as the Illini offense is, Iowa State's defense does create both turnovers and tougher shot opportunities. The Illini are 4th in the nation in rebounding at 41/game (Iowa State is 249th at 33/game). The Illini are 17th in offensive rebounds at 11.2/game and ISU is 117th in offensive rebounds allowed at 8.4/game (surprisingly the same as Illinois, but ISU is only 117th in offensive rebounding).
In Iowa State's 7 losses:
--Virginia Tech shot 40% but had 8 2nd chance points on 8 offensive rebounds
--Texas A&M shot 40% but had 16 2nd chance points on 15 OR
--Oklahoma only had 5 2nd chance points but shot 10/25 from 3-point range
--BYU had 10 2nd chance points on 12 OR
--Baylor had 16 on 13 OR
--Houston had 8 on 8 OR...but only had 9 turnovers and won despite shooting 42%
--Kansas State had 10 on 11 OR and won despite shooting only 40%
If the Illini can limit turnovers that will take away a key piece of ISU's offense. It also will mean more shots and more offensive rebound opportunities. If guys like Rodgers, Guerrier, Dainja and Hawkins hit the offensive boards like they are capable, it might be more important than ever in this matchup.
