Locks did him a solid in return for bringing him to FLA all those years ago and making him OC at Illinois. Locks and PSU's James Franklin were actually assistants together at Maryland 20 yrs ago.

The difference between listening to coach BB compared to Lovie is astounding.......BB is on a par with coach BU as far as knowledge and the ability to express that knowledge in a fan friendly way.....
I really think with BB as our head coach we will see gains as far as wins and respect from other programs....It is unfortunate that he is really starting a change of culture from scratch kinda like brad did in basketball..
I will be in front of the tv set Friday night cheering for the Illini big time in Paducah...
BTW, defend those damn slant routes , OK ????

I had to chuckle during the off-season when Locksley hired him into that role. I just recall our special teams under him looking like a Benny Hill skit at times. Perhaps if that's his sole focus he won't bollocks it up! I have soft spot in my heart for RZ but he was not the man to manage a large football coaching staff and team.

I think he was the right guy to manage and the wrong guy to coach.
Exactly the same for me but I would put Blackman ahead of Bielema until Bret shows a little bit more. Blackman is severely under rated in my opinion.

"It was really cool seeing the guys get in there and do their thing because they were all really killing it, but it was hard because I want to play, I want to contribute," Brown said Tuesday. "When I'm sitting out like that, I just feel like I can't do anything for the team, but my whole thing was bringing energy to practice and making sure that we get good momentum going into the game."
Illinois has gotten off to slow offensive starts through its first three games, scoring a combined two points in the first quarter, but Brown believes the team is capable of replicating its third-quarter drive against Virginia earlier in games.
The key?
"Execution," Brown said. "Everybody doing their job, making sure we're sound offensively."

We’ve deferred a lot, which is my personal philosophy as well. But maybe we need to take the ball for once if we can, so our offense doesn’t come on the field down 7-0.
My problem is offensively and defensively we seem to start slow. I credit this to a lack of identity and us not playing our game but the game that others allow us to have. I think if we get the ball first I am not confident we will score and build confidence as much as take away a possession later when we could build momentum in the second half.

As flawed as our offense is, it isn't the root problem. Until we can hold teams down a bit (baby steps, man!), we're gonna lose the vast majority of the time. And not very much help (already on the team) on the horizon. Just to be clear, there are some bright spots. Just not enough. Doesn't take a genius to suggest most of our recruiting efforts with the current class will be on the D side.
An interesting nugget Bielema brought up was giving up chunk plays (pass 20+ yard, runs 12+ yards), and that giving up over 4 usually results in a loss.
Our defense is already at a disadvantage by not having the athletes we want at corner, hence why we are 7 yards off and constantly giving up slants. But we can’t go press because we might get blown by at the LOS.
The lack of pass rush isn’t doing us many favors either, and could cure some issues on the backend by making QBs uncomfortable throwing, rather than the 7 on 7s that have been provided so far.

I think Bielema will do well, IF we can give him enough time to really build this into a program. And Yes, Blackman was a damn fine coach, he faced daunting schedules, and always had the team prepared... But we got impatient so we created the worst disaster of all, we replaced him with Gary Moeller. . .
