Haggard, Hauser, and Walker guys to stop. Particularly Hoggard as he not only scores but leads the team in assists. If Sencire could frustrate him, we could be in great shape.

MSU doesn't really have anyone scary talented. But they play slow, they play as a team, they don't make many mistakes, and they execute. They have one of the highest assist rates in the country this year. So if we can match their execution, our superior talent and versatility will lead us to another W.

And this is a perfect time for Ty Rodgers to gain confidence. He could guard multiple guys in this one if our starters are struggling. Hauser, Hall, Hoggard. Can't wait to see who Rodgers puts the clamps on next.

Someone remind me what the medical redshirt rules are for basketball. Is it half the season?
According to the NCAA rules, in order to be granted a medical redshirt, the athlete must:
  • Suffer an injury that is deemed “season-ending”
  • Their injury must occur before the halfway point of the season
  • Not participate in more than 30% of the season’s games

Ah, so since it wouldn't be season ending, none of this would apply to Goode.

This one and the home game against NW are the only Quad 2 games left. Here is what's left of the different quads, of course these numbers are always changing but it gives you a general idea....

Quad 1: 9 games (3 at home)
Quad 2: 2 games (both at home)
Quad 3: 3 games (2 at home)
Quad 4: 1 game (at home)

Going 6-0 in the quad 2 or worse games, and 4-5 in the quad 1 games would get us to 12-8. I think the great majority of us would call that a huge success, considering all the rumors of locker room issues and how ugly we were playing.

So long story short, this is a big game. We don't really have any room for error with these quad 2 or worse games, because going 4-5 against quad 1 is already a stretch with this young team IMO.

Huge game. MSU is extremely talented and probably should be a top 25 team if they had Malik Hall healthy the whole year.

With Malik Hall in the lineup their only loss is to Gonzaga by one.

Sparty looking good and playing tough. We will need to play well to win. That said, I actually think we match up fairly well with them? Seemed like Hall and Hoggard had their way down low with Wisconsin’s smaller guards. I don’t think they will be able to do that against our positional size.

Two biggest concerns for me:
1. Not letting Hauser get going. Mayer is going to need to fight through screens and contest. And if he doesn’t, think Ty can match up as well. His emergence will be huge for us the rest of the season.
2. Slowing down Walker. Our frosh have been taken to school a few times this year by veteran guards. May need Sencire more than Epps in this one for defensive purposes. Walker got going from mid range last year and just killed our drop coverage and almost brought them back if not for Trent’s heroics. Will be interesting to see if Dain is able to disrupt that action better than Kofi did.

I think the most imperative point is to win out Q2 and lower games. I’d be a little surprised if we could go 4-5 in Q1 games, but it’s not outlandish.

This game, when looking at Torvik metrics, resembles Wisconsin in how the teams play. MSU, like Wisconsin, has a very low Free Throw Rate on offense and a very low TO rate on D. This means they do not turn their opponent over nor do they get to the free throw line much. MSU is sub 300 in both metrics.

Add in that they are 306th in tempo and you have a slow methodical game that is going to be determined by execution on both ends of the floor.

The lack of tempo should allow time for the Illini to setup in their half-court D with plenty of time.

The lack of tons of ball pressure should allow the offense to get setup and run sets without turning the ball over at a super high rate.

Toss in a home game and I am going to go ahead and play Vegas. Illini - 4.5

This is blatantly obvious but if the Illini make shots and play solid half court defense this is a going to be a win.

Go Illini!!

Beat MSU and we will most cretainly be ranked again. Then we just need to hold serve at home and split on the road the rest of the season and we'll have a decent season again and will likely finish Top 3 in the B1G and will end up with at least a 4 seed or better in the Tourney.
