Whose rule is the 4 years of eligibility cap? NCAA? In this new era of NIL and Portal is that the next restriction to fall? The evolution of the student athlete probably not done yet.

You're absolutely right. Could Purdue offer Zach Edey something like $100 million (or more) for 10 years? Don't see why not. Raise it from alums/corporations, or better yet, raise it from student fees ($100/semester). Better money than what he could make as a Pro. And he could be work on several Masters degrees to solidify the student-athlete part of the equation. We could have done the same thing with Kofi. Some of the basketball players (and other college sports athletes as well) can potentially make more money in college over a span of 10-15 years than overseas. It's coming.

Yes, this is the rule of the NCAA. I have been waiting for this to be litigated. Fringe NBA players would stick around longer. Prep recruits would basically go to mid majors only except the best ones. Imagine playing Edey for the next 10 years.

I hate Peacock but the way the Illini are playing right now perhaps it is better that no one sees them!

I think this game gets chippy. A couple techs handed out. They have size, but not enough skill. We see a Moretti sighting.

Illini: 91
Michigan: 72

But the game isn't as close as the score indicates. Let's just get past it with no injuries.
I like your post. And I sure like your remark about Moretti.

No reason to expect it won't be. We let them hang with us for a half in AA and then blew them out. The boys will regroup from Saturday and get it done easily.
I sure like your thoughts about regrouping, but it has to extend beyond to the 2 road games after. We need to win our next three games.

I said this after the courts ruled that players transferring multiple times couldn't be held out of playing due to the inconsistencies in NCAA rulings regarding it and it restricting players ability to make money. I truly do believe that as soon as a lawsuit is filed, 4 year eligibility is going down. The NCAA wouldn't even be able to step into the courtroom to say they've been consistent in that rule without laughing.

I also think pro/amateur status could also be a point of contention through the backdoor argument that athletes are getting paid for services now and thus those making NIL money might be considered professionals by law and no different than players who left to play pro ball. The next few years will be interesting

Yes, but the insiders all seem to think he’s not going to stick around
I tend to think Coleman coming back for this season and leaving for next season have the same underlying logic: a weak 2024 draft class. This is the draft to get into.

Can someone please tell me if Coleman Hawkins is eligible to come back next year?
2020-21 doesn't count, so yes.

Starting next year, boring old 4th year seniors who are fully post-Covid and don't have extra eligibility will return to the sport. Luke Goode for instance (though there may be medical redshirt conversations there, not sure).

Anyone got a good scout on this team sans Dug?

I assume they run a lot more offense through their bigs.

Could be a sneaky Dain game.

Was watching Kansas v TTU and they mentioned that Hunter could come back next year.......I figured that should be the case for CH
Hunter will almost certainly be back. He's too slow for the NBA. He gets killed in transition at this level. He'd be a complete liability at the next.

Coleman, on the other hand, is a guy who could start on a good number of teams. He might even be better suited for the free-flowing style of the NBA. I'd be shocked if he doesn't make the leap.

I know we always make such a big deal about the next/upcoming game as if the season hangs on the brink ... but I really do believe beating Michigan handily is essential for this team to gain any sort of momentum as we enter mid-February. If you were to act as an apologist, you could quite easily explain away some of our recent "worrying" performances and/or stretches during the games since TSJ returned:

W 86-63 vs. Rutgers ... Sure, it was closer than it should have been for a while, but it was our first game reintegrating Shannon and in the end, we pulled away.
L 96-91 in OT at Northwestern ... Did we give up SO many chances to win? Sure. However, it's still an OT loss on the road vs. a good team that beat #1 Purdue earlier that year. In short, it is the type of loss you just try to move on from.
W 70-62 vs. Indiana ... With hindsight, this one should have worried me more. But we beat a rival by "winning ugly" on a day where things just were not clicking. We gutted it out, and that is what good teams do ... right??
W 87-75 at Ohio State ... This is actually legitimately some of the best basketball we have played lately.
W 87-84 in OT vs. Nebraska ... Should we beat Nebraska (who is awful on the road) by more than 3 points and in regulation? Especially when we looked like we had them put away?? YES. However, you can easily say they shot out of their minds, gave us their A+ effort/all that they had and we STILL gutted out the win.
L 88-80 at Michigan State ... Even though the way we lost was really concerning, it is still a Quad 1 loss on the road vs. a preseason top 5 team that desperately needed that win. Like I said earlier, you COULD explain it away and maintain a rosy outlook.

But vs. Michigan at home without McDaniel? If we are in a dogfight late and making our fans sweat this one, it is for NO other reason than we have some very serious issues that are going to cut this season well short of our goals. Period. There is absolutely no way around it ... if you are a top 25 team in our position right now, this has ALL the makings of a "get right" game. If we cannot beat them by double digits, I will start to get really scared that we are looking at a slightly improved version of last year's team's March prospects. If we lose ... shoot, man, we are cooked.

So let's go out and pound them!!

you had me at "If we are in a dogfight late ..."

agree 100% w/ this,

BTW - you surely have some time this afternoon to come up with our 6pm vs 8pm w/l splits 'home/away/total' 'weeknite B10' - last 8-10 years???

just wondering, feels like 6pm not as good

In all seriousness, I don’t have X’s and O’s to share, but I’ve watched my fair share of Michigan basketball this year… I can tell you Michigan will keep things somewhat close in the 1st half, potentially the first few minutes of the 2nd half. The game thread will be disgusting & riddled with negativity and panic. But like clockwork, the Wolverines inevitably collapse at some point in the 2nd half. It couldn’t be any more obvious that whatever Juwan is doing during half time is NOT helping that team

Lol. I will exclude the other start times like 7:30 pm to keep it that classic BTN/FS1 dichotomy of being the "early game" or the "late game," and I can only go back a few years ... but here you go! :ROFLMAO:

2023-24
6:00 pm: 1-0 (W at OSU)
8:00 pm: 2-0 (W vs. NU, W vs. MSU, L at NU)

2022-23
6:00 pm: 3-1 (W vs. OSU, W vs. UNL, L at PSU, W vs. Michigan)
8:00 pm: 4-1 (L at NU, W at UNL, W vs. MSU, W vs. Minnesota, W vs. NU)

2021-22
6:00 pm: 5-2 (W at Iowa, W at Minnesota, L at UMD, W vs. MSU, L at RU, W vs. PSU, W vs. Iowa)
8:00 pm: 2-2 (W vs. Michigan, W vs. Wisconsin, L at Purdue, L vs. OSU)

So not sure I really see a trend or whatever, but it is kind of concerning that in the last couple years, we seem to play worse in these big weekend games?
