Art's only played 3 quarters, a small sample size, and against the #3 defense.

I'm curious what opponent's QBR against Iowa is for the year.
Art isn’t anywhere near as good at Tommy. Doesn’t process things as quickly which then cause balls to get out late and put WR in harms way, he also isn’t as mobile as Tommy. Case and point is the pick he threw….bad play call but he threw it way inside…Tommy throws that ball low by the pylon or out of bounds

That was a tipped ball, but the point stands.

He's not a strike thrower and if you play LunneyBall with a guy that doesn't throw strikes a defense will feast on all the off-schedule, out-of-rhythm plays where a guy is adjusting to an errant throw behind the line of scrimmage.

Art is not TDV. With a week of first team reps and a game plan designed for his strengths and designed to address his weaknesses he should, theoretically, be better. More downfield and less side to side. I am just as worried about no IW. Concussion protocols can last weeks.

Tommy sees Tip Rieman running free across the back of the end zone and makes a simple toss for a touchdown

I don’t think we will see IW or Nicholson this coming weekend

I think you're right. After the Tua incident everyone in football on every level is going to err on the side of caution above and beyond the established protocols, and that's perfectly justifiable.

Unfortunately no TDV and no IW is really a double whammy in terms of limiting the things we're able to do on offense.

It would be a really good week to get McCray back, who would add a different element that we're desperately going to need. The conventional 90's style let-em-in-and-dump-it-over RB screen game is one particular area where TDV and Chase aren't exactly natural (height helps on both ends of those dump-offs) but Art and McCray are.

Lunney is really going to have to work outside his comfort zone to win this game.

It’s a re-injury of something he’s been battling. He’s a tough guy. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him try to go, but he will likely be limited. I don’t really know what Minny’s pass rush is like, but we really have to protect him if he does play.
I think I heard BB say "He got hit on the same spot on his ankle"

Honestly I didn't think there was such a huge dropoff with Art in the game, at least not to the degree that everyone is implying here. His accuracy is much improved from last year, hitting those short passes about as well as Devito. I was also encouraged by the couple of longer passes he hit. And he's a little smarter about throwing it away when needed.

The difference is in the decision making. Art still tries to thread the ball into double or more coverage, and passing into plays that are obviously about to get blown up. Plus he telegraphs everything... is he checking down at all, or are these designed plays where it's A and only A? Devito is much more deceptive and creative.

Without a doubt Devito gives us a better chance. But Art just beat the #3 defense in the country, so I'm not gnashing my teeth at the idea of him playing next week.
Just watched the replay and I'm thinking the same thing. Tommy has been playing so well, Art just looked bad in comparison, maybe? Art's not a great QB but maybe good enough to beat Minny

I agree with the first but looking at the replay a couple of times I think Art was trying to place the ball where only Bryant could get it, but it got tipped at the line and became a wounded duck. He did seem to be looking him down too much though and that may have been a factor in why it got tipped.

I think Bryant was a little behind the two defenders so I'm not too sure throwing at the pylon would have been a good idea. He certainly was well defended at any rate and Art should have just thrown the ball away, IMO. We ended up getting 3 not too long after so it turned out OK, but at the time it seemed to be a game changing mistake. Burned some clock so maybe it was a blessing in disguise.

2 thoughts on the team if Tommy can't go.

1. Let Art test the CB's. I think we ran a lot of quick screen game because Iowa likes to sit in 2 deep, but Arts windup is pretty telling and I think he doesn't always trust the plays. We have Hightower and Bryant, let Art try some deep and toward the sidelines throws(like we ran with Spann a season ago). Worst case scenario it's incomplete into the boundary and our receivers aren't getting lit up on slow deliveries.

2. Really not a fan of putting Isaiah in the wildcat. He's good in space, not when he's taking keepers right into the teeth of the defense for the hard yards.
Its not good for the receivers trying to catch telegraphed passes either, nearly got williams killed. First thing I noticed about Art on the passing plays is that he never looked anywhere but at his target receivers. They usually learn to look off defenders in high school. Its ridiculous he still has that bad habit.

Hotels booked. Tickets bought. Kids will get to see their first Illini game in person. Driving 15 hours from Austin let’s do it guys!
Fun. I’ve made that drive many many times. Are you going through Oklahoma and Missouri? Drive safe.

Y'know if this doesn't go our way, the next week's bye is really really well timed. It will be both us and Nebraska coming off byes on 10/29.

Illinois will really need it. Teams on the week after playing Iowa aren't the most successful. Losing DeVito, likely, (and others) along with Minny coming off a bye week spells trouble for Illinois. One tough road to a W is coming Saturday.

The only decent team that Minnesota has played is Purdue, and they lost to them on their home field. I think they are overrated. And our defense is like a brick wall. I'm surprised that Minnesota is the favorite, especially since we beat them last year, and this is a home game for us where we have dominated.
They might be overrated, but the Purdue loss was without their star RB. I think he and Chase had pretty similar stats at the time. Think not having Chase would impact the Illini offense?

I don't think I've heard much mention of McCray. Seems like he could be a difference maker.

Can't believe the action Chase has seen.

Art did the same thing against Iowa that he did in every game he played last year. On pass plays, right from the snap, he stares at his primary receiver, and that's where the ball is going. He doesn't care if that means throwing into triple coverage. Maybe Lunney can explain to him the whole concept of using progression to find open secondary receivers, but I don't hold out much hope. Art works hard and is a great teammate, but he does things the way he always has, and I'm sure opponents have noticed.

I see the future of Illini football is in good hands. Last year established a new culture and this year it is building one brick at a time. With basketball and football are in good hands. All I can say is great. Keep working.
