When I first went to Campustown of "(illegal) drinking age," these were the main bars we were aware of:

Legends: This was almost always our "start the night" bar. Great "collegetown" atmoshphere without being clubby. Still love this place!
Murphy's: I had never been here until 2016, and I remember thinking it was cool enough but I'd probably rarely go due to the other options in Campustown ... now it's like one of the few Campustown bars I'd consider!
Red Lion: Ended the night here a few times ... thought it was SO cool the first time I went there, and now you couldn't pay me to go there as a 30-year old. :ROFLMAO:
The White Horse Inn: Never went in this one either, but we walked by it and it looked fun. RIP.
The Clybourne: Never went in this one, usually in favor of Firehaus. RIP.
Kams: Duh, RIP.
Brothers: Loved the balcony setup, RIP.
Firehaus: I remember we went into this one already buzzed, and they had the "third floor" open, as well as stairs down to some beer garden area ... and our drunk 20-year old selves thought it was like the largest college bar of all time. :ROFLMAO: I have watched a few games here, as well, with both family and friends, and it was a great spot. RIP.

There might have been more, but these were the ones I knew of ... 5 out of 8 gone. I would be so annoyed if I were a student at Illinois right now. Went from having one of the better bar scenes in the Big Ten (especially when you included Downtown!) and being the #1 party school when I was first partying there to having like two bars anyone goes to. Sad!
You're missing Joe's here.

And maybe before this precise time period but CO's and FuBar deserve mention as well as the $4 pitchers at Geovanti's.

And because you mention Red Lion, obviously you're talking about New Clys rather than the much dingier and better Old Clys. Not to mention when Red Lion was Station aka Staysh.

Joe's, Bro's and Old Cly's were my primary hangouts in the Zook Era. A fair amount of Firehaus too once that opened and Old Cly's closed. Kams is like Wilt Chamberlain's 100 point game, nobody was actually there as much as they now say they were.

Iowa fan here. Illini will beat Purdue. You have a great defense and a good running game. Just don't turn the ball over. The Illini will be motivated and will play hard.

Lot's of Iowa fans rooting for Illinois. We love Bielema and respect what he has done for the Illini, and of course we are sick and tired of the Wisconsin !!!!!!!! from up north.

Dammit....wth dude? First the whole children's hospital thing and now this? Are you guys trying to drop Iowa below Indinia on our B1G Hate-o-Meter??

I need a shower.

In my day as a student (late 90's to early aughts), Red Lion was Bub's and then Station 211. There was also Cochrane's which then became Orchid and then Tonic. Also I remember R&R's fondly (Shark Bowls!) before it then became Firehaus (also good, though). There was also Red Rocks back in the basement level of College Corner at 4th and Green. I remember when Legend's first opened and they used to do swing nights back when swing dancing was a thing. There was a Wendy's and parking lot on the corner of 6th & Green where now Chipotle is. McDonalds used to be next to the old CoEd theater and then later became Yen Jing chinese. That was before it was all torn down and they put in the first big monstrosity apartment building along Green Street. Murphy's was tiny and there was a BW3 next to it (which then Murph's took over to double in size before expanding even more). Babbit's Used Bookstore was above them. And Guido's in downtown Champaign used to be 02 Main when it first opened. That was the like the first classy new bar in Champaign in decades at the time (then Radio Maria, Seven Saints, and Blind Pig opened the floodgates).

In my day, we had:
Boni's (our favorite - on 6th. Died our sophomore year). Turned into a mini mall.
White Horse Inn (bucket nights!)
Thunderbird in Urbana (freshman bar - Urbana was 18, Champaign 19)
Kam's - heavy frat presence
Dooley's (later COD's)
Cochranes (across from EE building - quarter Little King's on Wednesdays!)
Illini Inn (mug club)
Red Lion (Changed names several times, was a gay bar for awhile)
Panama Reds (on Green by RR tracks)
Mabel's (bands, on Green street)
Murphy's - grad students
Round Robin - 10 cent hot dogs
DeLuxe Billiards (oh, the fish sandwiches)

Lot's of others that were more restaurants that served beer (Treno's, Coslow's, Zorba's, etc.)

Geez - how'd I ever graduate.
What was the name of the hot dog place that was in with Boni's? Loved those dogs.

how about a heavy package with Avery lead blocking inside the 5
I like it. I just think, you have one of the most accurate QB's and some solid WR/TE's. Trust that. Sometimes, you have to pass the set up the run right. Chase is fantastic, but 9 in the box, including 2 safeties crashing, screams throw the ball down field.

Mark my words. If early in the game on first down, DeVito, bellies to Chase and pulls it back, even if he goes long downfield incomplete, the DB's are going to have to respect that and Chase will bust one 60+ yards.

I wouldn't mind seeing the unbalanced line "hog line" we did more than a few times last season.

We did that in my high school in fall 1978 when I was a senior and one of the guards. almost always good for a nice long run or two for the rb.

You're speaking my language! Tuesdays used to be wine night at Cly's and it was $6 for a bottle of wine or champagne. It was always Station during my time but Firehaus was the best...except for the Blue-guys

I played FB back in HS and back then they had a freshman team in addition to the varsity team ........We played Centraila one game my freshman year and the Orphans had a 330 lb nose tackle who also was the Fullback on offense..........I played center on offense and middle linebacker on defense.....That dude seriously caused me to think about not playing again after he road graded me on each side of the line of scrimmage.........I was 5'11" & 185 lbs and looked like a dwarf next to him..........it took at least 4-5 guys to bring him down when he ran the ball and I learned real quick not to let him fall on me .....once was enough for me........

One of my many Twilight Zone memories of my HS sports experiences...........

Arrived in our Lot at 8am today. Fired up for the basketball and football games. It’s bitterly cold and gosh darn windy. So windy that my pee makes a parabola when I’m outside the camper relieving myself.

Not sure how DeVito gets much yardage via passing game with these winds.

On that note, on to Silver Bullet (a non campus, campus staple for 3 for 1 happy hour) and then over to new Kams to bring home a grad student or alum before the game tonight!!

Post game, anyone from the board who finds me at Red Lion, your tab is on me tonight.

As was R &Rs on mug night Wednesday nights
R&R had drink specials many weeknights IIRC (circa 85-88). King Cans on Mondays (esp MNF), Long Island Ice Tea pitchers on Thursdays, I think there was a beer pitcher special Friday happy hours, seems like there was something on Sunday nights as well, although nothing could compete with $.25 beers at either COs or Kams.

I read these posts I write and realize why my GPA was so god awful bad. I think I had a streak of about 4 straight months where I hit last call somewhere every.single.night.

I was there from ‘78 to ‘82. Don’t know you, but just from reading your post I am certain we had to have crossed paths multiple times

510 E White, 78 and 79 for me. Funky 4 bedroom apts that had metal spiral stair to two upper level bedrooms. Thrown together in a hurry. The building is still there surprisingly.
Class of 76 here. Lived at 908 W. Nevada for two years. The building is long gone, as the U has swallowed up the whole block. Great memories though.

Attended for 6 months in 75 during g i bill funded tour of state colleges with the exceptional funding provided by Vietnam Nam era g i bill. Also a former student at eastern, SIU, Lakeland JC and Illinois State. 6 yrs, 1 degree. Too much fun, mostly at Panama Reds, the Lion and whatever was on top of Century 21 tower.

Anyone remember the All Star Frogs?
