The 84 team with Montgomery, Winters, Altenberger, Douglas and Richardson was wonderful, the most overachieving UI squad in school BB history. Only went 7 deep, too. Reached the Elite 8 and should have gone to the F4 if not for a bad foul call near the end of the game and the locale being Lexington.

Yep, bad non-travel call. Beal clearly traveled.

NCAA changed the rule concerning teams playing on their home floors in the NCAA tournament after this game. If I remember correctly, Kentucky lost its next game to a Patrick Ewing led Georgetown Hoya team.

I know it's a different game today with different players, but there were teams with 7 footers back then, and I didn't see anyone whining about our lack of length. In fact, if I recall correctly, our frontcourt stood 6'4" )Altenberger, 6'9" (Montgomery), 6'8" (Winters) and 6'9 Welch. And we started out the season ranked #1 in the country, finishing #12.

If you mean the 84-85 team, Montgomery had graduated by then and that team also had Meents and Shafer for depth on the front line. Altenberger was a hard nosed guy at the 3, too. That's when Illinois started playing 3 guards and more often than not since then, that's been the case.

Montgomery had not graduated yet in '84-'85 and was a starter most of the year until breaking his foot in February. He was replaced in the lineup by Ken Norman. Schafer was indeed part of that team but he ended up transferring shortly after the Big Ten season started.

Good catch, I was thinking of Welch's broken foot the season prior and forgot about George getting injured. Anyway, both of those teams had plenty of size and Lou's teams could always rebound the ball. We could use some of that today for sure.

I bet Groce would announce right before tip like he did for Nunn and Tate for the UAB game.

Could this be the game that Leron Black comes back for?

Leron Black's first game North Dakota State 11-15-2015

Last game for Leron was Western Carolina 12-5-2015

How much longer will he be out of action if he was ok to play in November?

Illinois 104 North Dakota State

We need to crank up the pressure on Purdue's guards, that's how Iowa was able to come back and beat them. No way we'll be able to stop their front line, so you have to try and disrupt the perimeter and make it difficult to get the ball to those big guys.

Watched Groce teach Post defence once.

Emphasized 3 levels to the players
1) Pressure on the ball intensely so the pass can't be made
2) Pressure over the front of the post player to deny the entry
3) Back side help to jump the pass.

I think you are on the same page. Control access to the ball even when you are undersized. Problem there is PU has some decent guards with ability to shoot and penetrate

Indiana up 44 16 . May be a day of one sided scores. Live and learn...get ready for the future

The question is not whether we will lose but by how much we lose. I'm guessing we lose by 10-15.

Unfortunately we are bad at 1). Not very long at guard/wing spots. When we get up close to pressure, they just go around us. This may work OK for us for awhile on lockouts if their shooters aren't on, but if their drivers just throw it up to the rim (floaters, e.g.), they'll probably kill us on rebounding. We need to be on fire from the arc the whole game to win.

Thorne has been on the court, but not for very much time, I think. If someone is coming back, it will be Black, but my guess is that no one comes back.

Three things need to happen for us to win this game - and we need all three:
1. We need to show up for both halves;
2. The 3's need to be working tonight; and,
3. When Purdue commits fouls, the refs need to call them. All of 'em. There's physical defense, and then there is just mugging, and Purdue has a history of getting away with the latter.

The last item is least in our control. I see us losing by a dozen.

If there is no way that Thorne gets a 6th year I hope he comes back ASAP. If there is a chance then I say screw this season and root for next year.
