Hope we have an effective plan for containing Smith. He set the tone of the last meeting from the get go and he is especially dangerous when they need a momentum play.

I think we need to put Shannon on Smith NO SWITCHING and stick to the shooters. Edey will get his but that doesn't always mean that Purdue wins. We have to stop their other players from going off and we can win this game.

He had 14 points on 12 shots, and 4 turnovers in the last meeting. He was a net negative no the advanced stats box score.

Illinois lost the first meeting because they forgot Trey Kaufmann-Renn existed for the entire game, and got worked on the boards (43-28)

I would love Luke to get back on track by going 5 for 8 on 3 pointers.

With Edey likely dominating the lane JMO we need to have another great 3 point shooting game like 9-16 vs WI or 10-22 vs MN. 10-27 vs Iowa may not be enough to beat Purdue.

The good news for us - every big, even very marginal ones basically score on us like Edey- we don’t stop anyone down low so this game will be no different- just keep on doing what we’re doing and we’ll be fine - basically treat Edey like every other big we play
Need to stop his offensive rebounds. Significant source of both him scoring and open 3 pointers. Wonder if this is game to play Hawk and Dain together. Dain tougher to muscle and still quicker than Edey. He also runs the floor well. Edey averages as many offense rebounds as Hawk and Quincy together. Stop this and the scoring won’t be a problem (maybe).

Domask probably will not be able to penetrate like he did against Wisconsin with "the hulk" protecting the basket.
How do we compensate?

Pass the ball and punish Edey for not guarding anyone. And don't be afraid to drive on him. Last game we were scared around the rim in the first 10 minutes or so.

The second-chance points are for me the most annoying thing about Purdue. They score SO many points because Edey bats rebounds out toward the backcourt. And I will not hear anything other than those rebounds are possible strictly due to Edey's height and nothing more. Congrats on having the most tall player.

My biggest Illini concern right now is Quincy Guerrier, who has effectively disappeared on both ends of the floor the past month (except the Michigan game, he was good there across the board), isn't getting the rebounds the teams needs, isn't defending the post players (leaving Coleman out to dry and unable to help on the quicker guards). Is it a nagging injury? Is this just what he is, and he just disappears for long stretches? I feel like if Guerrier isn't going to provide defense or rebounds, might as well play Dain more minutes with Coleman.

I think we are getting the best version of Quincy. His 3 pg % is career high, but otherwise he is playing around his past 3 years averages. We are lucky to have him. Otherwise his 25 mpg would go to Luke (weaker defense and rebounding) Ty (no 3 point threat). It would be nice if Quincy could guard the 5 more often to protect Coleman from foul trouble and use his 6'8" 220 frame in the paint. Unfortunately he is not a great shot blocker nor does he bang like Draymont Green.

That’s crazy to me. Not at all doubting that we can beat them. Just seems wild to favor us when it seems like we haven’t beaten them in forever.
Vegas heavily favoring home teams this year. I posted a day or two ago that I wouldn’t be surprised if it was something like Illini -2

I just hope it makes it to the open market like that so I can bet Purdue to cover and hedge my emotions or be happy to lose money 😂

Our super power was Kofi inside. He destroyed Michigan and Wisconsin.
Edey was only player in b10 who could contain Kofi and score on Kofi.

Except its not the best version of Quincy, we saw that earlier in the year when he had 6 double doubles in 8 games (9.7 per game during that stretch). During that run he was absolutely getting after it on the glass on both ends of the court but what has recently fallen off are his defensive rebounds. He's only had 5 or more twice during the last 8 games, way below what he was getting before that.

This. Guerrier was the only guy who showed any inclination to rebound in the first game. If, indeed, Ty doesn't get much tic we will need much better effort from our other players on the boards.
