All I see is a 6 seed went to elite 8 three out of the last 4 years... It's called blinders.

Also I'm pretty sure Michigan didn't do anything in the tourney in 92 😉😉😁

I don't want a repeat of Maryland game. We were coming together with Tre playing a ton. 19 minutes against Maryland hurt us. Morez sporadically, is fine. Keep doing what works.
Morez, Ben, coming off bench. Tomi, Tre, Kj, Will, and BAM leading the freaking way. Get it right coaches, make other team play your game and lineup!

Does anyone know what really happened with his forearm? I have a feeling that he is not 100% recovered. It seems that his production drop off is directly related to that injury.
I agree. His shots from anywhere on the court seem to be off significantly since the injury.
What kind of injury would linger this long?

It will also be imperative for the coaches and ACs to ensure that Kylan Boswell does not bring sage to the game. Some might say the team's inconsistencies began on 1/11/2025, the day Kylan Boswell saged the SFC in pregame. Coincidence? You be the judge.

Xavier with a better coach, better rebounding metrics and better record over the last two months granted they play in the big east but they did beat Marquette, creighton and took the Johnnie’s to OT which are three of the better teams in that league so I would say take the inferior coached team who fouls more then anyone with the hopes of Tre and BamBam having one of their Better defensive games vs Tre Johnson.

I would love to know what has led to his decline. The arm injury? Increased pressure from defenses? Offensive scheme? Problem between the ears? Coaching style?

It's just wild how he went from being in the same conversation as Dylan Harper to not even the most reliable guard on his team.
BU was talking him up in Jan. All downhill since.

Xavier is way harder matchup. Texas is firing their coach after their next loss unless they go on an NC State type run

Me too. Xavier is older and better coached than Texas is. Xavier can get on a heater like Maryland did and not look back. Xavier has always seemed to be a team who plays better in the tourney as an underdog.
Xavier is also a different animal with Freemantle back.

Also, sidenote: anyone else notice how many kids in the tournament went to Bloom? Maybe we should just take the best kid from there every year and see how they pan out.

Keshawn Williams for Colorado St., Maddox for Xavier, Shumate for McNeese, and Newby for UNC-Wilmington.

Maybe it was just a good class but they have 4 kids in the tourney.

It's been mentioned on here a few times throughout the year, but historically Illinois really hasn't ever outplayed their seed. This is just the perfect path to change all that. Obviously we can lose to anyone in our way (was not expecting to play bad teams) but there's not a single team in our path that I'd consider an auto-loss until the F4. And even then, if a couple #1 seeds drop before we get there...

I gotta say, the dust up yesterday in the Coaching Carousel thread regarding Tyler Underwood's value and future prospects... I mean, any high school would welcome him in a heartbeat!

Pretty innovative stuff he's installing for Texas or Xavier, if you ask me...

Crazy things happen during these first two weeks of the tourney, 2018 is a perfect example of that. We rarely win underdog games. Since the increase to 64/68, we have only won 3 of those games. We will need to win a few to advance this year. We have lost several to lower seeds dating back to 1981. I would love to be the Cinderella for a change and make a run by upsetting a 3 then a 2 and take our chances against a possible 1 seed. I won’t say we are owed this, but it would be a great thing if we could be one of those break through teams who makes a deep run from being outside the 1-4 box.

Look no further than last year.

You’re right…and I hate that you’re right.
Ha wasn't meant to be a pessimistic take or anything! I think it's true that we got a GREAT draw. I also understand why, for people looking for a 6/11 upset, we would be appealing... just the dichotomy of this team.

Yeah, it's already out there in a few talking head's prognostications. Hopefully, the Illini don't need any extra motivation but if they do, here it is.

I didn’t take it that way. No worries.

Freemantle only missed 3 games total

Texas has been absolutely ravaged by injury this season and is just now getting healthy:

Chendall Weaver (starter, 6 ppg 5 rpg) missed 15 games
Tramon Mark (starter, 10 ppg) missed the first 6 games
Tre Johnson (starter, 20 ppg) missed 2 games
Arthur Kaluma (starter, 12 ppg) missed 2 games
Jayson Kent (6th man, 6 ppg) missed 8 games

One of them plays in the SEC and the other in a conference (Big East) in which only ONE team had less than 10 losses... there is literally one top-level team in that entire conference. During Xavier's recent 7 game winning streak, only one of the teams even have more than 14 wins... here are the W-L records of those teams they beat:

Providence 12-20
DePaul 14-19
Butler 14-19
Seton Hall 7-25
Creighton 24-10
Butler 14-19
Providence 12-20

Texas has a top 5 pick, Xavier has nobody on any NBA radar (at least that I can find)

I'm making a case for Texas to be the better team here, but understand Xavier is a slight hair better in most analytics

We've literally never beaten a team that was more than 1 seed line higher than us.

That's gotta be one of our most insane program stats given how many tournament games we've played.

35 appearances, 80 games, five Final Fours. The thought that we've never defeated a team more than one seed line above us (i.e. beating a 4 seed as a 5 seed) is mind-boggling given that sample size of games. I wonder if there is any other program with, say, more than 50 NCAA tournament games that has a similar track record.
