Okay, so I write this not trying to dog NM at all, like AT ALL. I hope he gains muscle, improves his shot, improves his handles and decision making and becomes a freaking star. Like, I really do. I want that for anyone that puts on the O&B.

And I also know he’s the closest thing to a true PG we have.

But am I missing something? Did him showing out a bit against craptastic Southern University (not Southern Illinois University), make him a huge loss for the season?

Was he all of a lighting it up in practice and going to become part of the 8 man rotation?

I’m honestly asking, because the lamentations to inevitable injury news feels like we are about to lose a key starter, not our 3rd string PG. (queue the “he’s our only PG!” jokes)

If we’re all concerned because he’s one of us (an Illini) and that’s why we want to know, I’m right there with everyone else. I hope the young man heals quickly and hate that he’s injured.

But if we’re concerned because we were (and the coaches were) expecting big minutes from him…then I missed some critical new piece of info.

And without that piece of info, him being hurt doesn’t change the calculus of the season right? Just a bummer for the young man?

Anyway, hope he can get healthy and bounce back quickly, just had to ask.

I don’t think it’s a massive loss, but to your point about why are people making it a big deal, I think it’s probably because he’s the closest thing we have to a true point guard. A lot of people on here think that’s a need.

Illini: 88
Western: 64

Hot take: Ty has 8/9/5. Overall dominant game. The second half brings echoes of "Sweet 16" looking team.

Should be another chance to try different line-ups and give the bench some tick.

Not untrue, however Nico was one of our best players on the Spain trip and looked much better than our insiders were hinting at. Also based on what Brad said post Spain and a few weeks prior to our opener, it seemed that Nico had worked his way up to being in the backup PG discussion and would be getting "prove it" minutes early in the season. While he didn't show out in his limited minutes against the quality competition, he has done very well against the cupcakes. I think it's fair to say he has outplayed DGL up to this point and might have even moved ahead of him on the depth chart.

While not a devastating loss, I think Nico was in the process of expanding his role this season to maybe 5-8 minutes a game, so it is sad to see him have a setback now. But yeah, the Nico for PG1 25+mpg, send Ty to the bench group is more than a bit Bears 3rd string QB syndrome. Caleb-Haniacs assemble!

They are terrible. Southern beat them. They have NAIA schools on their schedule.

Let's just run a few actual halfcourt sets for practice and once we are up by 25 in first half pull TSJ for the night.
Goal here is to not have anybody else get hurt. We have real games starting next week.

Rodgers is not a point guard. Period. He is a small forward we are playing out there as a stopgap. Cannot shoot anything but a layup, and has average handle and vision at best.
We will be Top 25 ish no matter who we throw out there due to TSJ and the supporting cast and a weak BT again, but our ceiling is limited if he is the primary lead guard all year.

We need DGL, Harmon, or Moretti to all step up, and/or use TSJ and Domask to initiate whatever they are calling a halfcourt offense.

I've tried staying out of the Ty is not a point guard debate because in my opinion it's a ridiculous one based almost entirely on semantics and misguided anger. If you took the "point" out of Ty's positional title would you still be saying that Nico, DGL, or Justin should be starting over him? Better yet, if you picked our 5 best players thus far this season, would Ty not be on your list? If your answer is yes to either of those, I have trouble believing you're watching the games.

Even if you want Nico, DGL, or Justin to play, I still don’t see you benching Ty for them. Him and TSJ have been our two best starters thus far. The point is, whatever position Ty is technically playing makes little difference as he would still be on the court.

I don't understand at all dragging someone who has clearly been one of our best players thus far through the mud because he doesn't fit your definition of what a point guard is. Just seems ridiculous. The problem isn't with Ty, the problem is that Brad constructed an unbalanced roster this season that is very light on the ball control, movement, and entry passes you'd expect out of a traditional point guard position. And that is something we're going to have to work out against better teams. But yelling that Ty isn't a PG is ridiculous as you could say the same thing about Domask, Guerrier, or heck, even CoHawk right now and it'd be exactly the same, except based on performance, you'd rather have Ty on the court than any of them right now (note that this is based entirely on performance in the first 5 games of the season)

Just a crazy conversation in my opinion. It's right up there with the Loyalty, "We need to bench Brandon Paul until he learns to have 0 turnovers a game conversations."

These are mostly older folks who have a tough time with change. The crowd that yearns for “traditional” roles on a team. Even though Ty played PG in high school, since those two letters were not in front of his name for college recruitment, he cannot possible fulfill that roll in an offense because that is not the way it is supposed to be. People just can’t get past that.
