You are a voice of reason . . . .

Unfortunately, you are injecting logic into an emotional situation, which defies logic ;)

I will check out emotionally for the next 2-3 years until I see the product that Lovie will put on the field. The good Lord willing, and the creek don't rise . . .

Your either all in on this team are not from day one- Guess we shall see you in 2 years. Emotionally I am also destroyed but there is no check out time.

These kids we have now are laying it all on the line and getting better every day as a team I see it even in a loss.:illinois:

Expected more discipline from a lovie team.

Also, we have a long way to go. Its going to take years of recruiting. I think we'll see better facilities long before we see a better football team.

The stadium didn't look too emtpy today, which was nice

Just going by a foggy memory, but don't really recall Lovie's teams as being highly disciplined.

"Beckmans recruits" won 5 games and beat purdue 48-14 last year. They won 6 games and went bowling the year before. you people need to stop putting the blame for this crap defense on Beckman. this coaching staff is under performing

I agree to an extent. These is a senior dominated defense, but are playing very undisciplined.

Going into the year, I expected us, based on this defense and a weak Big West, to be fighting for 6-6 and a bowl bid. However, I fully expected a downturn for a couple years afterward.

Both players and defensive coaches are underperforming.

Disappointing? Yes. Ridiculous penalties particularly the personal files and celebrations without a doubt.

But I can't believe what a whiny bunch of losers this board is now attracting. a year ago all anyone wanted was a high-quality coach and a path forward. We've got that now and have turned the boat. But we're still playing with the two and three star players the Beckman recruited. It doesn't get fixed overnight so get a hold of yourselves. Now go upstairs from your parents basements and ask them for a hug. You'll be fine. I promise

A question for any refs on here, or people highly knowledgeable on the rules, regarding the Carroll hit. Strictly a what if question, because it was the right call, bad penalty. N fact, he never should have hit him, let alone with his helmet.

My question is the way it was called, specifically it was called "roughing the passer, targeting," as opposed to just targeting.

If, and just an if, a targeting call was overruled (general question) how does the roughing the passer play into this situation? Normally, when a targeting call is over ruled, the penalty is also over turned. Would the roughing call have still stood, or do the refs have to call one or the other?

Thanks in advance

Damn, I'm going to have to lose weight and exercise if I'm going to be around to see the turnaround. :) This season is going to be a little worse than we expected. Next season is going to be a dumpster fire. But hopefully towards the end of next season we start seeing some progress. And it's not like there aren't positives to take away right now. I mean, how about our RB's? They consistently made something out of nothing and busted out some long gains today. We had a QB come off the bench and I thought that all things considered he played a HELL of a game. Malik made some clutch plays today. Special teams... maybe not. The only thing that really got me down today, was the defense. My friends and I were up in the stands today calling plays for Purdue and accurately predicting exactly where the ball would be thrown on the next play. I just don't understand what happened on D today other than being pushed four yards off the line each play. Purdue had our number for most of the day and when you put that in the context of last week Maryland's game... I just never know what kind of team is going to show up from week to week. We just have to stick this out. We have to support the program and the coaches and hopefully, HOPEFULLY we see some progress. I just want all our coaches back every year for the next four years. I need some continuity. Man, I am not looking forward to all those games next year. This is going to be a long, ugly, nasty slog before things get better. I hope and pray we miraculously improve and win four games in a row, but in my heart of illini hearts I see a LOT of losses ahead. Time to go heads down, eyes up, and grit this out. Hopefully we go .500 in '18 and it gets better from there. For now... we're in trouble. Josh! Keep that staff in place!!!

We have terrible fundamentals on defense. Few players wrap up and drive their feet when making a tackle. Most grab at the waist, fall down and roll. LBs and DBs rarely make the tackle at point of contact. Most are carried upfield by ball carrier. How many pass breakups did our DBs have?

Largely on the backs of Zook recruited players, including one that plays for the Colts currently. Beckman brought in very few Big 10 caliber players.

Beckmann brought in maybe a few players that would have cut it at any other P5 school that is not Purdue or Kansas.

Might get one more win in there somewhere. Next year is going to be ugly.

I'm honestly okay benching Lunt for the rest of the season. He's not doing us any favors. He can't connect with anyone.

Excessive Celebrations

What is it with the excessive celebrations ... Actually I didnt think the one after the touchdown was excessive, but I guess it isnt allowed, so whatever.

What I am pissed about is players celebrating an individual performance when the team is losing.

Jamal President made a tackle in overtime that held Purdue to a 1 yard gain, and he started celebrating his play. Dude, theyre at the ten and in great position to win the game with a field goal. Dont celebrate unless you recover a fumble!

Thank you for pointing this out. The Seniors in 15, and the juniors and seniors in 14 were mainly Zook guys with a few Beckman guys in there. We're going to be dealing with official Beckman recruits now for about 2 years and then they'll begin to get weeded out or dropped on the depth chart as Lovie brings in his guys.

Now, all that said, what frustrates me is the inconsistency (well, except for penalties... we're very consistent at that). Our offense showed some step today, and our defense shat all over themselves... Last week, our offense couldn't do anything, and our defense played they're minds out.

It's just getting old. I've had season tickets for 12 years, and it just gets tiring... I feel bad for the people that have had them for longer.

My biggest fear this year is that We are going to win 4 more games... and really kick ourselves for this one.

I don't see where we get three more wins this year.

I agree it's tiring watching the Illini struggle to be mediocre year after year, but the tides will turn and we will be something special. Lovie and crew will get us to Indy, we just need to rid ourselves of these Beckman recruits. Can we get a bunch of JUCO guys or grad students for next year?

Haven't posted in a while but thought I'd come back to the board and post.

What gets me about this loss is that we have what? An NFL defensive guy who can't stop the run. So maybe the recruits aren't there and they aren't good enough for the scheme. I wrote off the UNC loss because we hung in there for 3 quarters to an extent. WMU is bad but they are good this year and I felt like it was a trap game from the start. Nebraska we had a shot at the end before it came crumbling down. But what I want to know is, what happened to the defense that played 3 good quarters against Nebraska? Where are the "draft picks" at? Smoot, for all the hype, had maybe two plays where he was in the mix. Our offensive line either doesn't have the fortitude to beat the guy across from them or dont have the fundamentals. Where is the pride in what you do? Lovie did us no favors with the coaching today with not centering the ball, but he's not going to be accountable for that. If the refs are flagging excessive celebrations, then stop celebrating. We have the academic standards that limit who we recruit but I never see our players playing with intelligence nor discipline. As to carrol Phillips I don't want to see him on the field the rest of the year, pulling that stupid nonsense. Maybe Lovie is used to dealing with men in the NFL but 70 of our players are definetly not ready to be treated as such

I think the fact that our D was solid for much of the UNC and Nebraska games indicates the coaching is excellent. I think we're inconsistent because our talent is...not ideal?

Some real growing pains to be felt. I think losing these games stings more than it has because so many of us feel we can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Anyone trying to pin our shortcomings on the coaching staff is missing the point this isn't really Lovie's ship at the moment.

Programs aren't found. They are built

C'mon... very high chances we win more over the next three years.

I think the Lovie "effect" and euphoria generated more expectations than this team deserved. The talent is not there, it is pretty obvious. But expecting four wins over the next 3 years is going the other direction. This program will get better, but it is not a quick fix.

No. I just don't expect a Lovie coached, senior led team to be kicking off from the fricken 15 yard line (in part because of senior). How enjoyable was that little party when measured against the LOSS! (Ya, I'm looking at you,Spencer.) I'm OK with a loss, if I see our players respecting the game, the coaches, and the fans. That hasn't been the case for a while now.

McGee is doing okay under tough circumstances. And the offensive line has been improving week to week, which is encouraging.

But even considering the talent deficiencies in the back seven, our defensive staff has been getting totally depantsed. It was an embarrassment today. Gap integrity was horrible, eye discipline was horrible, Purdue was getting any matchup they wanted all over the field, the tackling was bad, pursuit angles were a disaster, the penalties were killer, etc, etc etc.

And that's to say nothing of our special teams which are just too bad for having a dedicated non-recruiter of a coach taking up one of our 9 spots.

The postgame thread of a disappointing loss is never really the place for these discussions, but we have a standing $4 million commitment which did not immediately create a $4 million staff. That should come as no surprise whatsoever given that it had to be assembled in a rush in March. But there needs to be a commitment to making that funding commitment count, and that's going to involve some uncomfortable decisions. The time to make these decisions is NOW. This offseason. We need a couple of outstanding recruiters with high-level experience. Where are those spots going to come from? Remains to be seen.

Hardy Nickerson had a very light resume for this job, and his defense is a travesty, even with full consideration of the talent level. Those are just the facts right now.

He'd still be coaching Beckman recruits so i suspect we would lose. There are no shortcuts.

True. I'm likely not alone here, but I always found it interesting how nearly every year Illinois manages to field a handful of legit NFL caliber players in a sea of 3* and NR players. With that said, Smoot is for real.

Like I mentioned earlier, Lovie has a tough hole to climb out of. It's unfortunate, bit its where we are. The upgrades to our facilities are gonna be great. Out coaching staff is solid. The piece missing is the talent. We'll get there, it will take more time than we thought, as shown by today's game.

This call was a joke, even before they decided to double it. The ball flip penalty was a joke as well. I guess in the officials' eyes, Purdue late hitting Lunt out of the game, then late hitting and kicking off Crouch's lid was less worthy of penalty than a ball flip and 3 players dancing together. GMAFB.

Those were Zook guys. To date I think Jihad Ward is only Beckman recruit to land in NFL, though Smoot and possibly Phillips look to join him

I agree.

McGee has been doing quite well with mostly non elite skill players. The line is opening hole for backs we didn't count on for much of anything at the beginning of the year and we almost seamlessly switch offenses with the Lunt injury today on the fly and were very effective.

If we could land a 5th yr transfer QB next year with Turner Dudek etc, I think our offense could be surprisingly good. That includes holding onto Epstein who I think is massively underrated

Malik Turner looks like a star to me who I think can be a 1st team all big 10 player next season with right qb
