Purdue 44, Illinois 19 Postgame

Nebby is about as bad as us.
Indinia is about as bad as us.
Kitties are about as bad as us.

So if by some chance we play well enough in those 3 games looking like 5-7 is our ceiling. I was really hoping for 6-6 or better and a second straight bowl just to get some program momentum.
Minnesota is plenty beatable.

Still have hope. But one of the most embarrassing losses we've had.

I've been a big defender of having games on streaming services, but I just realized the most enormous downside (for me at least). You can't flip channels without going through a whole lot of hassel. Trying to switch to the KU/UT game during a commercial break nearly caused an aneurism.

As far as this game--I didn't expect to win, but I didn't expect to get pantsed on national streaming.

I’m pretty shocked that the position groups our team media as well as Brett hyped in the off-season (I.e. oline, dline, receiver) have played as bad as they have. This staff needs to recruit like their jobs depend on it because they legitimately do. Complete embarrassment.

Hey at least we get Washington, Oregon, USC and UCLA next year instead of the Big Ten West. Those games seem winnable right? Ok maybe we will keep our "rivalry" games with Purdue and NW. I'm embarrassed, sad, mad, disappointed, etc. after today. Our DC is overconfident and not up to the job. Our OC does not make adjustments well at all. Do you think Bret is recognizing this?

And the thing that actually irritates me the most, our guys are still jawing after plays. Shut your mouth, and get to the next play without the fans at home holding our breaths for an idiotic 15 yard penalty.

Coming into this game I felt we had a 50/50 chance for a win. I actually thought we would play a solid game and bring home a victory. Boy was I wrong. Purdue stepped up and we stepped in it. Outplayed us on both sides of the ball. While Luke was ok today his decision making is not big10 level yet. Can't miss wide open guys 20 feet in front of you and absolutely has to get better at getting rid of the ball and avoiding the sacks. I know a lot of that is on the oline but as the qb you have to be aware of that more often than not you are going to have to get the ball out quickly. On a positive note Feagan looked good today. We should have been running him a lot more from the beginning of the season.

This is Arkansas Bret . Bret hasn’t done much in college football since he left Wisconsin. Bret is now 15-15 at Illinois in the middle of his 3rd season and the team looks terrible. Looks worse than his 1st year at Illinois. I don’t see this team winning more than 5 games. I hope we win 5 games.

Shouldn't surprise us Illinois lost it's 1st Big Ten road game. Over the past 20 years, the Illini are 5 & 15 in opening road big ten games and have been outscored on average 30 - 18.

If you want to feel better, just tell yourself that bowl games in the college environment these days are overrated. Anybody that has a chance at being drafted sits out.

As some others have said, think we need to change our play calling on Offense to account for this O-Line, it is sad we can't get push up front or protect for long pass plays....but looks like about all we can do is do quick hitters on passes and run to the outside...so prb need to be doing that a lot more.....because with the season almost half over....if this O line hasn't improved by this point....just have to do everything we can to play with that in mind and hope we can steal a couple more wins.

We've now played 5 games and I have these two basic observations:
1. The quality of the opponents has varied from game to game
2. The quality of our play in those 5 games has remained incredibly, surprisingly and consistently BAD from game to game
- absolutely zero improvement shown from Week 1 to Week 5
- a thoroughly overmatched OL
- an overmatched Defense in every game; now destined for last place statistically in the Big 10
- a team that is horrifically undisciplined on both sides of the ball

This is the same issue that kills me, once we started falling apart, I wanted to be able to flip to other games without leaving the app and using DIRECTV (or another app).

IMO the OL is a Jimmy/Joe issue. Lunney is not great but he is hamstrung by the extreme lack of talent at OL. Henry has not impressed me at DC.
I don't mean to be mean, but I'm very disappointed in McCray's performance... I mean, 3.6ypc is not good, but I wonder if this is also attributable to poor OL (in the same way as Altmyer would probably have better stats with a good OL).

Many of us said that this game would define who we would be this season. I guess we now know. I didn't want this year to be like 2002 or 2008. Thought we could finally not fall on our face after a successful season. I guess not in the cards. I was truly hopeful this year. I really was. Silly me. I guess the "please god, let us just make a bowl game crowd" was right after all. How sad is that...
I have little faith in Brett making us a consistent winner. But I do think he can keep us in that 5-7 win range. I will admit I am afraid he may take the Bruce Weber route. Win big with another coach's recruits and then flame out because of poor recruiting.

radio interview with BB..............................

kinda happy with the way we ended the first half...........
game came unraveled when we left the purdont TE open for a TD............
Luke was getting no time to set up let alone pass it..........
blame starts and ends with me..................

very very short interview....... Very easy to tell BB was in a very very bad mood........
As he damn well should be. Something is being left unsaid or not being heard in the locker room. This is a team either not listening to the coaches or being poorly coached. I know coaching can't immediately win games, but it can make improvements however small. This team is getting worse.

Thanks for letting me vent.
