We played good fundamental basketball past 2010-2022 - feeding Kofi in post, tight man defense, passing to the open man. Driving into the paint to create open shots. We may have been limited physically by our small size except for Kofi but we did great based on our talent level. Ayo, Kofi, Andre, Trent, DaMonte, Jacob, Giorgi, played strong fundamental game.

This year it feels like we underachieved.

MM and TSJ taking turns going 1 on 5.
Poor defense - teams scoring 80-90 points on us, and almost every opponents best player getting personal scorring best against Illinois
Terrible shot selection - taking defended three's early in the shot clock despite being one of the worst 3 point shooting teams in the country
Poor offense - dribbling aimlessly above the 3 point line

Yes we lost 90% of our scoring and lost numerous players to injury or transfer. So did every other team in B10.

Brad tried numerous times this season to get them to execute better on offense and defense but was frequently unsucessful.

Hopefully we can put together a little run in B10 tournament and NCAAs.

I think we are seeing the downside of taking HS recruits or transfers whose number one priority is the NBA.

I hope our freshman/sophomore core comes back next year and we have much better chemistry. I could live with no incoming portal players who are looking to prove themselves to NBA.

You don't have to create your shot if you run the play. It's great to have the option of a Mayer step back at the end of the shot clock, but forcing when there's still 20 seconds left is not a good way to win games.
Every good team has to have players who can get their own shot. Every team you play knows what you run.

Agree with pretty much everything else you said, but this is way off base.

I also think we are the 2nd youngest D1 team in the country (someone fact check this; I've only heard it on the radio shows 1000x this year though).

Editing to add Torvik shows us as 333 out of 345 teams in terms of experience (not age but games played).

With scouting, film, and a 20-game season In a brutal conference that’s probably 100%…accurate..,except for some coaches out there that add some small tweaks for post season play….

BUT, even if they know exactly what is coming the opposition still has to stop it. (A lot of coaches have that mentality/are of that belief.)

I agree that every team needs a guy who
can just create/make a play. (But to be fair,
other teams know that too. And, it’s pretty easy to key on that dude.) i.e. that comes with a fair amount of predictability too…

It matters how much time is on the clock.
If it’s 20-25 seconds try to run a play with about 2-3 options….if it’s less…get the ball in the hands of your best playmaker. IMO

I don’t know what happened in the scenario with Mayer’s quick 3…I haven’t seen the Brad’s presser yet…so dunno if it was a: miscommunication, bad execution that led to a broken play, or what…but in that scenario with the time we had on the clock…we needed to be trying to get to the basket IMO

I don't think we run much of an offense at all personally. At times we do (seldom). But most of the time it's one on one stuff with guys standing around (Rogers and Harris don't stand much and I love it). If you watch film of our games we have the most success on offense when we are running what looks like an offense (screens, cutting off the ball, etc.). You're correct on what you said, but I like a motion offense that has wrinkles. The wrinkles keep the defense from knowing exactly what you're doing.
I'll also say in response to other recent posts that I agree with, that we are very young so that bodes well for the future. I also agree that I prefer committed players that come and stay and avoiding the portal, BUT the unfortunate reality is that b/c of COVID, NIL, transfer portal, etc. most teams are going to lose 1-2+ players every year, as will we. If we don't use the portal we'll fall behind and always be pretty young in comparison to other teams. For example, let's say we lose 2-3 guys to their senior year or NBA after this season, then 2-3 transfer out and we don't use the portal, then we're always going to be a team with a majority of underclassman.
I think the key is to fill 1 or 2 needs with A LOT of experience out of the portal. Then hope you can convince as many of your players to stay as possible. It's just a different recruiting game these days and has to be really tough.
On a positive note, while this team is very frustrating, it's frustrating b/c it has so much potential. We could be 11-20 right now and complaining about worse things. The future is bright with Dain, RJ, Goode, Epps, Rogers, and Harris (and Hansberry coming in). I really hope the core stays b/c there is a lot of talent and athleticism with that core. They play hard defense, they rebound, and they are talented. Parts of this core seem to be what has sparked us all year after slow starts. I also think Goode, Rogers and Harris could be our leaders and floor generals. We are certainly lacking in that department. But there was very little experience at all heading into this season with these three. So heading into next year I think we could be really hard to handle. Until then, let's go make a run in a pair of tournaments. Go Illini!

All of you people saying it wasn’t flagrant, here is my question. What is a flagrant foul? He pushed with two hands. If he had three hands, he would’ve pushed with three hands. That was flagrant as it gets.

I would like to see every reference to the referees deleted by Dan. It’s so tiring to have to read through 20 pages of whining every game about a factor of sports that has never changed in my 60 years of following competitive athletics at every level. Referees/umpires are going to be wrong some of the time. Over time, it all evens out. It really really does. (thanks, pru). There is no master plan to favor one team over another. It makes our fan base sound like little whiny children. How about a postseason moratorium on complaining about the striped shirts?
I don't necessarily agree that it evens out over time, but let's say it does. I think something that would make things better here would be for some people(not you) to quit constantly complaining about our players. Those kids are 18 to 23 years old. They work incredibly hard and those kids are so much more talented than 99.9 percent of the people who criticize them.

Forgive me if it's been referenced in the previous 12 pages (I only read 6 of them).

Why was TSJ the primary ballhandler with Epps out? I read where someone said CH should've been but with Shannon and why often left alone for one-on-one? Recipe for failure out of the gate. Seemed like that was 4 TOs itself. I think we all thought it would be a combo of Hawkins, Harris, and Rodgers. I never saw solo Shannon at the point coming in the game plan.

None of the four is a good option. Epps may not be a true PG, but he's way closer than the guys you mentioned.

From Dec. 10th:

I have been saying this about the beloved daddy" Brad for years!
AND now there is no true All-American go to guy. Ayo and Kofi spoiled the hell out of us.

Where is a base offense, with back doors, alley-oops, screens and set plays??
Everyone else has them AND we are going to continue to be disappointed as they carve us up.
Someone said to take a deep breath relax, BUT everyone should take a hard look at the schedule and realize there is a double digit loss season coming.

MAYBE this makes us tourney ready??

The spread offense that we currently run as our base offense literally starts with a cut off a back screen for an alley oop look, and is followed by basically a high flex screen read for a post up.

Out of spread spacing Brad has a couple favorite sets for this team. A high post entry with cutters splitting the post into a downscreen and dribble handoff (zoom action variation), a high post entry with 2 cutters in a baseline cross screen for a high-low post look (mostly seen this run for Mayer) and elevator screen look for the high post player after a wing entry (mostly run for Mayer).

I also wrote this in a different thread not long ago:

Our go play when we need a bucket is a cross screen into a p/r for the guy BU wants to isolate. You might remember MM had it going against MSU I believe and in the post game presser they said they ran the same play like 10 times in a row. They run it for Shannon too and even a couple times for Epps.

They have a second play that they seem to run quite a bit as well where the guy who is going to end up with the ball pass and cuts to the basket area, then receives a down screen to sprint into a standing handoff read with the high post player (a variation of zoom for you basketball people). That’s what I’ve seen the most.

When we actually execute this we are pretty effective offensively. Unfortunately, for whatever reason our offense too often degenerates to dribbling along the 3 point line, making a couple of short passes around the arc and throwing up a contested 3 pointer

Just rewatched the Matt loves bball replay of the game.

Frustrating because I felt like we really beat ourselves in the first half. Careless live ball turnovers, busted switches, poor communication/rotations on the drop coverage. Credit Purdue because they made us pay for every mistake but I would bet 60%+ of their first half points came off of our mistakes vs. them executing/making shots.

But what was most frustrating was watching Edey on defense knowing two days later he got named to the all defensive team. If the game was only played within the arc under the basket he would be one of the greatest of all time. But he absolutely cannot guard at all in space. We basically played him off the floor in the second half. He’s good at what he does but all defense? Total joke.

Epps is definitely the best option on the roster. I was questioning the best option with him out. TJS would not have been the guy I picked -- and others on here -- and I think we saw why. That's all I was saying.
