Has anybody thought about this; Why did Purdue pursue Walters and not Leonhard?
we have no idea who Purdue called and talked to - maybe they did and Leonhard said no ?

yea, it doesnt matter if RW was choice 1 or choice 3 or whatever

I respect Coach Walters and appreciate all he’s done for us. That being said I do not wish Purdue success. I do not wish success to any rival school. Our desire to see the Illini rise and our rivals falter does not change just because we like the rival coach.
Big ten wins is a zero sum game. Some team is going to get them.

So now it's Purdue over Northwestern, Michigan, Michigan State,Minnesota, Penn State, Iowa, Nebraska, and Indiana.

Don't care about Wisconsin really.

I'll root for them over OSU just for the fun of things.

Why does it matter?
My question was just a "food for thought" to all those thinking a Leonhard hire would be a great decision. Based on what I've read, I think Kane is the best decision. I guess my gut tells me that Bielema knows what he wants in his assistants. Maybe other people in the conference recognize that he has direction and vision with his staff. Leonhard was the DC at WISCONSIN for 6 years. I don't hear people around the country clamoring for him (including Wisconsin). Good managers hire good people, then have to wish them luck when they get opportunities. I know that was how my career went and how I operated. Just a thought.

Does anyone have any ideas about who Walters would hire as DC at Purdue other than KK?

I don't see any speculation on the Purdue board. They are primarily interested in who will be hired as their OC.

Wisconsin wanted him back as DC

Uhhhh, He will be one of the most sought after DCs in the country. His track record as a DC speaks for itself. He will have numerous NFL opportunities after black monday happens.(If he doesn't take a college job before then)

Ok. Basically, my original question was that Purdue selected Walters over Leonhard (unless Leonhard turned them down, which I doubt). Why? Of course, now I'm laughing at myself for even bothering. I really don't care.

rightfully so

pretty much have to assume that RW is going to entice one of our assistants to Purdue. Out of respect and the fact we have a bowl game in 2.5 weeks , I think he's waiting for BB to make a decision on our DC . Whoever their DC is, will need to be someone who totally thinks in concert with him.

I think Walters has to wait until BB males a decision and doesn’t really have a choice.

I don't agree with this. I view the bolded part as toxic.

If I win, the fact that everyone else came up short is a given. I want them at their best when I beat them. I want them healthy, rested, and ripping off personal bests. I don't want any weird calls from the refs that gives one team an unearned advantage. I don't want it to be all my fans in the stadium. I want the peak performance of two worthy competitors and for me to decisively win, fair and square.

No need to sneak in the side door. Go through the front! Let it end with two fan bases who had a great year and can be proud of their athletes.

I liked Walters when he was our coach. Now he's not, and I couldn't care less how he does, except in those cases where it affects Illinois. He's a rival coach, and like all rival coaches, I want to crush him every time our two teams step on the field.

I just don't see RW taking Henry. I think BB has big plans for AH and blood is thicker than water. Henry seems to be loyal dude. I could see a guy like CPatt moving with RW.

I don't really get all the talk about RW stealing or taking our coaches. Do our assistant coaches not have agency of their own to decide where they want to work? I get it if Purdue offers a raise or promotion to go there that you'd make that move. But all else being equal I don't know why you'd want to uproot your family, move to a new city, and not coach all of the players that you worked so hard to recruit and build relationships with on the team for a lateral position unless something is really toxic about where you're at.

I know bowl games don’t really matter but PU won’t have much of an offense. I wish the NCAA would put hiring and transfer freezes until the season is over.

Three of O'Connell's teammates — tight end Payne Durham, wide receiver Charlie Jones and cornerback Cory Trice — have also opted out of the bowl game, the university confirmed.

Remember coaching is a job to these guys, they have no loyalty to the schools. None of those guys came to Illinois because they love Illinois(minus Whitman and Chester).

I could see it. RW is gonna need to get an in road somewhere and I think CPatt offers that into STL. He is a young dude, does he have the connections to get an ace staff?

Some coaches have better agents to get you better connections. BB has a monster agent. I don't know who RW's agent is and does that guy have big connections, I don't know. I don't think RW will raid the staff, there is still some decorum there, but as RW builds a staff he can offer a big opportunity to one or two of our guys.
