where did the term "red shirt" come from?
where did the term "red shirt" come from?
from the medical "redshirt" , that hurt guys would get. I think they would wear a red penny jersey in practice, so no one would hit themwhere did the term "red shirt" come from?
Sorry, I forgot that I have a google machine for such things. Anyone have any other questions that I can answer?Redshirt (college sports) - Wikipedia

Maybe when he gets back he will plow through players doing moving screens instead of getting completely flattened.Look what an extra year did for Trent Frazier. Not RS...but Covid....but remember how skinny that freshman was? If Sencire is committed to his body and craft over the next year, he'll get his chance.
I hope this ends up as another great 4-5 year Illini favorite.
That's a pretty funny cut in the video. He goes from saying "I smelled blood on the court," to "I love Illinois, I-L-L, baby." I didn't see it live, and was wondering if it was edited to keep it brief or if DGL got a little spicy there.I am not trying to be adversarial, but did you hear DGL's last comment in that little post-game interview posted on the home page? He said, "I love Illinois". He didn't have to say that. And, of course, he may someday transfer out. I think many an Illini transfer actually loved or liked being an Illini but for whatever reason decided to transfer out. I think Mike LaTulip is a perfect example. But, anyway, at least DGL's comment was a good sign.
I would venture to guess ball handling and off ball defense.Fully understand the off the court goal of getting fletched. Naturally slim, long limbed people take more time to get stronger by nature than most other body types.
What’s the on the court goal for growth? I’d assume shooting. Long term play make him a pg so he can harass the other teams pg?
It was edited, yes. There was a bit of 'doing it for my teammates who have kept me going in the hard times' that got clipped out. That's a pretty funny cut in the video. Weight training in season is usually about maintenance rather than bulking up.This is a bit of an Explain it Like I'm 5, but how is it that sitting out a year will allow Sencire to make significant improvement to his weight, shooting, and other areas of improvement differently than being on the active roster? I understand he has gotten passed up and he might as well not burn a year of eligibility for limited minutes, but the whole redshirt to work on your skills idea is a bit confusing. Unless it's really just the playing time issue. Why isn't getting Fletched as a redshirt the same as if you were on the active roster?
1- DGL & Ty.What 2 underclassman PGs are you speaking of? Fears (hopefully) and who? Jase Butler? Maybe, but that is far from a foregone conclusion, as he will still be a freshman who has never played in our system. As a redshirt sophomore, I would give him the edge over Butler for playing time at this point, assuming that he continues to improve his handles and outside shot and gets bigger. All these things are reportedly what he is working on this year. I also don't understand how being older than your average sophomore hurts him? It isn't like at 21 years old he will be past his prime. Also, while I agree that he needs to become a better shooter from outside, Buck scored over 1,600 points in HS at St. Vincent-St. Mary second only to LeBron. So, it isn't like he isn't wired to score. Dude could be an absolutely vital piece of a successful team. Motor, defensive tenacity, and length is there already.
Agree! Minutes were going to be a problem this year and instead of becoming bitter about it as the season went on he is taking responsibility for himself and fixing the items he needs to work on. A selfless decision in the day of getting mad, poisoning the waters and hitting the portal.Extremely mature decision
Most on here aren't questioning why it's happening. There are almost 200 posts because he's incredibly likable, played his butt off for us last season, and it's extremely rare for a player to make this decision, even if it's the right one.Almost 200 posts for this is overkill.
My apologies in that I misread what you wrote regarding the underclassman PGs that Buck was behind. You meant underclassman THIS YEAR, and I read it as for next year. I see what you were saying more clearly now. However, I can still see plenty of tick available to him at 1-3 if he does add size, strength, and tightens up his handles / outside shot a bit. I stand by the fact that he is an incredible athlete, and I think his age will be more of a benefit than a hinderance. Skills can be taught and honed through repetition, athletic ability is something that you have or you don't. Not guaranteeing that he will make a huge jump during this redshirt season, but I am more optimistic than doubtful that he will be able to play well enough to deserve 10-20 minutes of playing time by next season. I agree that his defense and his energy were extremely beneficial for us.1- DGL & Ty.
2- I can't help you if age isn't a concern.
3- I hope he figures out either his handles/shot enough to get tick, he's won us games with his D alone.
He needs more weight regardless of what he decides to do.I respect the decision but worry that a year on the bench might let folks away from the team get in his ear.
I'd hate to see a year of development turn into the portal loss.
It is surely a minutes thing, but he is probably on a different work out schedule with Fletch than he would be if he was playing during a season. I would imagine he can do more with Fletch now than he would have been if playing. Guys can't really bulk up during a season because they play and burn so much. This is a bit of an Explain it Like I'm 5, but how is it that sitting out a year will allow Sencire to make significant improvement to his weight, shooting, and other areas of improvement differently than being on the active roster? I haven't watched the whole segment, just going by what is written here but they seemed to have a better take than Werner and Piper. I watched/listened to their (Werner/Piper) after-game analysis and they were pretty skeptical about his redshirting. Werner said his "skepticism radar went straight through the roof". At least it seemed that way to me.
He's not away from the team. He just won't be playing. If people want to get in his ear, they'll find a way regardless. They are doing what's best for Buck and his development as a basketball player and person. Hopefully, it pays dividends down the line for Illini basketball. If it pays dividends for another program, it will likely because his playing time situation in Champaign hasn't improved.I respect the decision but worry that a year on the bench might let folks away from the team get in his ear.
