Spring Game game thread

Not gonna go as far as saying we would have gone to a bowl game. Remember Peters was 12 of 18 for 291 yards in the Spring Game in 2021.

I suspect that the run game will still be our bread and butter.
agree on being run centric but devito consistently hit receivers on time, in stride. i know it's spring game but i get the sense there will be far fewer misses on wide open receivers c/w last year where even if a few more of those bunnies were completed we would've made a bowl game.

early take for sure, but with that combined with the new OC, i'm encouraged

Well for what it's worth Lunney's vanilla spring game offense looked light years ahead of what we did last year.

Complimentary plays from the same formations and quick easy throws. What a concept. It does look like DeVito has a lot more zip than Sitkowski orPeter's.

I was freaking out in the 1st quarter, but who am I. 😆 Coach had a offensive play sheet ready for specifics.
My takes:
1. I WILLIAMS route running has Dramatically improved, very crisp.
2. JUCO Transfer Crisler beast. Needs to shed 30 more lbs and he is gonna be NFL. Already nibble and decent techniques. Awesome pick up by coaches!
3. Freshman running back Anderson, wow!💯
6.3 ft 230lbs. Runs ball well and damn he can catch the football out of backfield!
4. Devito, IMO was not impressed, under throws ball to much and he will never have that much time this fall.
5. Love of course McCray, Brown, and was happy with O line.
6. Wr. Bryant was impressive, Wr. Corp scares me.
7. 2nd. Team offense Woeful!!!!!!!!
8. Our Depth Across team is really Bad! Here's to staying healthy and patient as staff builds up team. Gonna be 2 or 3 years. NO DEPTH ON TEAM!

Please stay health Illini! Go get it for next 4 months. Thanks Coaches and Players, all involved for such hard work.

DaVito and Peters, two quarterbacks same completion percentage last year and I would say Peters had a better offensive line and the veto has been constantly hurt. I have high hopes for him but let's slow down the DaVito freight train our quarterback crew is extremely weak we got to improve it. quarterbacks win games or lose em!
I have high hope for Devito!

I'm WAY west of ole man river, and I watched the whole thing on BTN. NOTE: I never saw that banner.
Apologies. A touch of sarcasm on my part. It was 3rd quarter when I posted the comment, and we were still on page 1 of this thread. It seemed that very few were, in fact, watching the game.

"the veto" is my favorite of all these misspellings...

Definitely an improvement over last year. On the flip side, not impressed with Ryan and Collier.
Totally disagree on Collier. I liked his performance. Remember he was playing with the 2nd unit. Ryan didn't fare to well.

Couple things:

1. I was right about Jordan Anderson. A year with Tank and you best get out of this young man's way.

2. Good to see Hightower and Chase Hayden out there. Really hoping for some good production from them as I think they're 2 of them higher ranked transfers we brought in.

3. Pat Bryant and Miles Scott look like two young WR who can contribute. Bryant is a lanky, smooth runner, and Miles looks really good at adjusting to the ball in the air.

4. DeVito's ball placement looks a lot better than Art or Peter's last year. We really struggle with intermediate throws last year. Let's hope 3rd and 4-7 conversion rate can improve.

5. We have an absolutely stacked group of running backs.

My keys at this point in the spring are:

Can we reload on DL??

How much can Lunney improve our QB play?

1. Going to withhold judgment on DeVito until he's facing an actual rush. Arm strength is there and I like our top 3 receivers. I'd expect somewhere between 1600-1800 yards passing if everyone can stay healthy.
2. Starting OLine should be decent enough once the coaches settle on the combination they want.
3. Depth is paper thin, especially on defense. Desperately need 1-2 transfers each at Edge and Secondary

We were there-decent crowd on a (finally) really nice afternoon and evening. It's amazing how much beer I can drink in Lot 31 versus the real world. Got to meet two young incoming players and their dads, and both were well spoken young people that I'm excited to watch in the future. Hope springs eternal-only 4 months of waiting now. Go Illini!
