Really, it isn't a bad idea. It is always good when the opponent has something else to think about. I don't think MM is saying all the time, but if they are giving him the third base line, he should take it. You can't score unless you have people on and with our 3.8 runs per game last year, I will take men on base.

I disagree. You can't score if you don't hit for power. If everybody is up there just trying to get base hits then you end up averaging 3.8 runs per game for the year. Our power numbers were bad last year, if everyone is hitting singles it takes a lot more hits to produce runs, and that's why run production was low. Let the power hitters do what they are paid to do. If he can take the ball into the left field corner regularly like he did last year early in the season that's fine.

No question, but Adams only hit 15 last year. Can he get it to 25, maybe. I think the idea is to get the defense to think about extra things, like maybe we don't want to extreme shift this guys, which will in turn open more of the field for Adams. Again, I don't MM is thinking every plate appearance, he is going to bunt, because that wont work, but if he can lay a few down here and there, it will open it up for him.

+ most teams aren't going to have an extreme shift when runners are on as they don't want to give 2nd and especially 3rd base for free. So, in my estimation this would be a good thing to have in your back pocket. My biggest gripe in this whole thing, why did MM state it publicly?

Maybe it's a ploy to get teams to play straight up.

I have to say I am not against this thinking. If he does it every once in a while with nobody on to start an inning, why not get on base. Ya we hit a ton of singles last year as a team, and we couldn't score runs, but without people on base you won't score a lot of runs anyways. So let him bunt every once in a while.

So MLB network recently finished their top 100 right now players. There were 6 cardinals who made the list:
Waino
Molina
Peralta
Heyward
Holliday
Lynn.

No Matt Carpenter. That's a travesty to leave Marp off the list.

Discuss.

Marp HAS to be on there. No offense to Heyward, but his offense has been down for 2 season, and understandably so, but Marp is probably a top 1-3 lead off guy in baseball. Leaving him off is a joke. There is not more than 100 better players than him; hell, there isn't 75 players better than him.

Marco threw 4 scoreless today. I'm guessing he will pitch awesome in spring, but will be pitching in Memphis to start the season. He doesn't need to be in the pen, cause most likely we'll need him as a starter at some point in the season.

Looks like Heyward will be batting #2 behind Marp. He'll be asked to do what Beltran did a few years back and hit the hell out of the ball. The interesting debate for the lineup is - what do you do with the bottom of the order? You don't want Wong and Jay. You don't want to make it too easy for a situational lefty to come in and shutdown a late inning rally. So I've been thinking maybe moving Wong up to 6, Yadi at 7, and Jay at 8(no more than 450 AB's)

This is how my lineup would go:

Marp
Heyward
Holliday
Adams (drive the damn ball)
Peralta
Wong
Yadi
Jay
Pitcher

^ we're on the same page. I think you have to split up Jay/Wong, however that may be, but they would get dominated by a lefty (Jon Lester opening day) if not separating them.

Who do you think rounds out the bench? Just curiosity as a fellow Cards fan.

I think either Grichuk or Piscotty will be the main bench player. Hoping for Grichuk since he offers more pop, and potential. Reynolds of course, Cruz, and a lefty bench bat. Not sure who that would be though. I would choose Kozma as the ultimate utility guy but he's a righty.

Who would you go with, TeBee5? And post more, we need more Cardinal fans in here.

Was a longtime lurker, go to school at SIUE so attend games frequently. Love the Birds.

I agree with you on the bench. Think Kozma has to stay on the bench, he's been busting his butt this spring. I also prefer Grichuk over Piscotty. Cruz and Reynolds. Would also like a left hand bat, but we don't have a lot to offer.

Marco was lights out today, but have to let C-Mart lose the spot in my opinion.

Im excited about Heyward and Wong. I still feel like this lineup needs a hitter that pitchers fear. We have a bunch of good hitters but not great.

Our pitching: Wainwright, Lackey, Lynn, Wacha, Martinez with Gonzalez stepping in when needed is what will make this team go.

Why can't Martinez stay in the pen? He can be one of the most dominating setup men in the league. And he can step into that closers role if Rosenthal falters. Plus, Marco gives us a lefty starter.

I want to buy another jersey. Trying to figure out which young guy is going to be with this organization the longest. Don't want a Holliday, Wainright, or Molina jersey because they only have a couple years left. Any suggestions? Definitely leaning toward a Heyward jersey, I think he's going to play great this season but will we sign him long term? My other top options are Wacha, Wong, or Adams. Who do you guys think has the best shot at being here for a long time?

I definitely agree. Jordan Waldan is no slouch in the setup role and C-Mart's stuff is dominant, and he's just began developing better command with his pitches. I wouldn't mind Garcia being that guy to step in and have Marco get time in Memphis before giving him the spot. IMO this allows enough time for Garcia to prove that he still has something to offer while Marco dominates AAA.

Heyward forsure! Hopefully sticks around awhile too! I personally got a Wacha last year, also try to get one every year or two.

We are underutilizing Martinez by sticking him in the pen. His pitches weren't developing like they were suppose to, especially the changeup. Martinez has the most upside of any pitcher on the staff, and he deserves a shot for an entire season.

I do agree that we need a lefty in the rotation, but the only player who has a chance to start is Jaime cause of the contract.

Go with Wong. You know for sure that Wong will be here longer than a season. If Heyward was gonna be here for a definite 2 or more years, I would say him but we aren't sure of that.

Oh I agree about our hitters. We need a hitter that is feared, and we don't have that. Heyward has the potential for it, and he's young enough and just coming into his peak strength years; so maybe he'll do it. Idk but time will tell.

Bump.

And I need Wong to do some big things this year. I kinda reached on him in an 18 team fantasy league draft with the 61st overall pick. He wouldn't have made it back to me, but still probably slightly overpayed for the projections

Who should get the 5th spot? If we're going off of performance thus far, it's definitely Marco. I would still go with Carlos cause he deserves a shot; although, you can start both Marco and Carlos in Memphis to be fresh and stretched out whenever Garcia goes down.

What do you guys say?
