Nice to get that first one out of the way. We definitely have some things to clean up, but I'm satisfied with how they performed today.

To the post above why Martinez was in, IlliniFan was right, they need to get him work with the off days. Technically I don't believe we need a 5th starter until around April 20th or so.

Lot of lefties(no surprise) against one of the best lefties in the game. Lets go Cards!

I wasn't sure if Matheny was going to panic and stick a few RH bench players in the starting lineup to face Lester. Good start for the manager too.

Whose call was it to have Carpenter attempt to steal with Heyward up first and third and two outs? Dumb move!

I didn't mind it. Pushing led to stolen bases for the Cards and errors for the Cubs. I like them taking some chances. Last year they were scared to run.

Couldn't believe he hasn't thrown to first since April of 2014 or 13! Don't mind running, but not when a big and hot bat at the plate.

More specifically, not with 2 outs and a runner on third.

Who knows, there could've been a missed sign, scouting reports say Lester doesn't check runners, or just poor decision. I wouldn't be surprised if that was a missed sign for a hit and run with Heyward seemingly in a groove at the plate.

If you're skeered, just say so!

Chicago Cubs ‏@Cubs 17

Tonight’s #Cubs vs. #Cardinals game has been postponed due to the forecast of rain and sub-freezing wind chills throughout the evening.

I wouldn't bank on it.

MLB should have teams open in the South, West and dome stadiums for the first 2 weeks. But then that would sort of admit the season is too long. Stick 7 day/night double headers on the schedule and shorten the season.
While they are at it they can get rid of so many open dates the first couple of weeks of the season too.

The open dates are put in there because the weather is generally worse in April right?

As long as they remember to close the roof when it's supposed to rain :D

Yep and except for an opening day cancellation they almost never use the open dates to replace a rain out. The only time that happens is if the visiting team isn't coming back.

I agree with the double headers to shorten the season, but moving all the games to the south and west would take away opportunities for a lot of teams to host on opening day every other year. I know I always get a couple extra warm fuzziness when that parade is actually on the true opening day

I know. And the number of weather related cancellations is pretty small. The South and West was just me being dramatic.

Where are all my favorite Birds on the Bat fans?! Big win today against one of the best pitchers in the game. Peter Bourgeoisie with a nice steal. Maybe we actually DO run more this year?

Where is cardsillinifan? Don't think I've seen him post for awhile. But yes, I think the Reds are going to be that team I enjoy beating the most this season. It seems to rotate every year between the Pirates, Brewers, and Reds. I know it's early, but looking at the talent in the division it seems as though the Cards and Reds are head and shoulders above everyone else. Billy Hamilton is such a peak on the bases and there will be plenty of times where he walks or singles, but all of a sudden is on 3rd base with 2 steals. It also helps when you have a closer that is pretty much untouchable. I'm going to guess whoever stays more healthy wins the division while the other is a wildcard.
