St. Louis Cardinals 2022

How do some of these home plate umpires miss obvious strike calls? Cost the Cardinals 2 runs.
This was posted long before the game was even over. So pretty funny tweets. Other just angry.

Yankees fans were justifiably furious with umpire Ed Hickox's dreadful day behind the plate

If you needed any indication as to why Major League Baseball is testing an automated strike zone in the minor leagues, just check out what happened during Sunday’s game between the Yankees and Cardinals.

Ed Hickox has worked as an umpire in MLB since 1990. And despite his 32 years of experience, he’s among the worst umpires behind the plate in the entire league. Earlier this season, he called a ball on a pitch that was right down the middle.

That was terrible, sure, but situationally, you won’t see many worse calls than his full-count strikeout call on Marwin Gonzalez with the bases loaded on Sunday. If that wasn’t bad enough — he had 20 missed calls through six innings.

Sweeping the Yankees. I never would have expected it.
Me neither. Probably because this is the first time in the history of baseball the Cardinals have swept the Yankees! In a game where everything has happened before, this had never happened before. Crazy.

I was at a church function when the 2nd inning occurred and I almost got kicked out of church because of him. It was very hard biting my tongue.

It would have been a good way to watch the game, which is what you probably wanted to do!

I have recently found out that the Cardinals radio call on KMOX can be streamed through the Audacy app. I have had the app for awhile, mostly because I like listening to the Score out of Chicago (mainly from 10-2 nowadays). Because we here in central Illinois weren't considered to be in the Cardinals market on the app (for what reason I have no idea), it wouldn't allow it to be streamed (which is odd because it allowed the Cubs games on the Score to come through).

Within the last week, it allowed me to listen to the Cardinals game through the app without any issue. May be an option for those on here who want to follow along with the game and don't have the ability to watch or listen to it through a radio.

Wait a minute, central Illinois is HoosierLand?

Set this account up nearly a decade ago when I was living in Indianapolis at the time. Lived there for a little less than 2 years before I got laid off from my job. Wasn't able to find any other work there so I moved back to Illinois and have been back in this state ever since.

Four hours, 25 minutes later Sunday, the Cardinals finally reached the two-thirds mark of the season in first place by two games in the National League Central Division standings. That means 108 games have been played and 54 remain, but the Cardinals’ record when they’re in first place at this point of a season is gaudy.
After they completed a three-game series sweep of the New York Yankees with a 12-9 victory in a record length for a nine-inning game at Busch Stadium III, the Cardinals’ winning streak had reached seven games. And they are a season-high 12 games over the break-even mark, 60-48.
Since 2000, the Cardinals have won 10 division championships. On eight of those occasions, they were in first place after 108 games played — in 2019, 2015, 2009, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2002 and 2000. And 38 of their 54 remaining games this year are against sub-.500 teams.
We’ve got to continue to play like we’re playing the Yankees,” said Paul DeJong, whose three-run homer in the eighth inning gave the Cardinals a little breathing room.

The Yankees lost their fifth game in succession and were swept in a three-game series for the first time this season. They were swept by the Cardinals for the first time ever in a three-game series.
The only other time in their histories that the Cardinals had won three games in succession from the Yankees in the same year came in the 1942 World Series when the Cardinals won the final four games after losing the first game.

By 7 p.m. Sunday, Busch Stadium sat still, like a ship from sea finally ashore. The rollicking and boat-rocking of the past week was over. The tide had turned.
The Cardinals navigated seemingly everything with simultaneous grace and grit — from pulling off trades to pulling out of trades; from players gripping onto new opportunities to infielders ripping homers.
After two series sweeps — three games against the rival Cubs, three against the storied Yankees — the Cardinals were in first place and in a better place.
Here’s thinking this month could be one of the best in years. The Cards are 6-0 in August. They have 22 remaining games this month — six are against winning teams.

But what’s stood out this past week was the enrichment.

The enrichment of confidence in players the team didn’t give up in trades. The enrichment of players the team didn’t give up on. And the enrichment that came from sweeping the team with the best record in baseball.
“Sweeping a good team like that at home is something to prove to ourselves that we’re also in that in that upper echelon,” said Cardinals outfielder Lars Nootbaar, who was 6 for 19 on the homestand with a pair of spellbinding catches. “I think we just proved that at any moment in the season, anytime, we can beat anybody. So I think, pretty good indication of where the team is headed.”

While the Cardinals await word Monday on how pitcher Jack Flaherty (shoulder strain) felt after Sunday’s aggressive bullpen session before deciding on the start of his latest minor-league rehabilitation program, slugger Juan Yepez knows when and where he is going.
Yepez, recovering from a forearm strain, will head to Memphis on Tuesday for what he believes will be a week or less of games.
The right-handed batter, who has hit 11 home runs in just 62 games, will start off playing first base for a few innings, he said. Then he would serve as a designated hitter and graduate to right field, which is where the Cardinals really want to see him perform.
Manager Oliver Marmol said he was envisioning Yepez as a right-handed-hitting counterpart to left-handed-batting Lars Nootbaar in the Cardinals’ new-look outfield — which will feature left fielder Tyler O’Neill and center fielder Dylan Carlson as everyday players.

Yepez did his most extensive throwing on Sunday before the game. He has been out longer than anticipated — Yepez was hurt in mid-July — because he had encountered discomfort in the first throwing program he undertook.
“We had a little setback,” he said. “We threw too quickly, so we had to shut it down for a bit. We threw and it started hurting the elbow. But we’re definitely in the right direction.”

At the moment, I'm not sure there is room for him on the roster. Who would he replace?

Some really noteable NL notes.

-Dodgers smoked the Padres, sweeping the 3 game series and it really wasn't close.
-Mets won 4/5 against the Braves
-Phillies are also on fire since the all star break

It would be really nice to stay on fire, while the Mets choke down the stretch so we can get that 2 spot and avoid the 3 game series. But I don't think that's happening this year. They are looking really good.

On the other hand, it sucks the Phillies have also been really hot. We are winning the division, yet right on the edge of being out of the playoffs still.

The New York Yankees did not enjoy their weekend stay in steamy St. Louis.
They suffered a three-game sweep to run their losing streak to five games. Their old friend Jordan Montgomery threw five scoreless innings against them Saturday.
Yankees newcomer Frankie Montas suffered a disastrous pitching debut Sunday. Anthony Rizzo sat out the series with a sore back and New York's lineup wasn’t all that imposing with him and Giancarlo Stanton (Achilles soreness) on the shelf.
Manager Aaron Boone was ejected from Sunday’s game for protesting the erratic ball-and-strike calls by hapless umpire Ed Hickox. Boone gave an excellent presentation at home plate, theatrically demonstrating just how far inside and outside some of Hickox’s strike calls were.

Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake also got ejected, forcing the rest of their field staff to bite its collective tongue while Hickox continued blundering his way through the game. The Yankees are just 6-10 since the All-Star break and they have lost 16 of their last 25 games.

“We need to play better, to be quite frank,” Yankees third baseman Josh Donaldson told reporters. “At the end of the day, we still feel very good about our team. It’s a little slide right now. We need to get back on track and continue playing hard.”

That app reminds me of Ed Hickox’s strike zone. I live 10 miles from Busch Stadium and sometimes it blocks the broadcast because I am out of St. Louis market. What?

That was easily the worst umpiring performance I've seen in a long time, and it somehow didn't involve Laz Diaz or Angel Hernandez.

Hickox was comically bad. Several pitches 4-6 inches off the plate were called strikes, some of them at crucial times while stuff that was clearly a strike were balls. I'm surprised just the 2 Yankee guys got thrown out I wouldn't have blame anybody for losing it.

Then on top of that he calls PDJ out at the plate when even a little league ump could see he was safe.

Yeah. Poor Yankees never catch a break.
