St. Louis Cardinals 2022

Yeah thats a terrible article from Gordon. "Perennial contention" hasn't produced a world series in over 10 years. The Cardinals have aging stars in Goldy/Arenado vs the Padres young guns. They should have done what it takes to extend using those guys' prime rather than another first round exit if they even get in the playoffs.

And it doesn't look like it would have taken Walker based on what the Padres gave up.
Yeah, I found the Hassell to Walker comp to be a stretch. Walker is a top 10 prospect. Hassell is in the 20-30 range. I think this deal would've gotten done (for just Soto) with Carlson, Gorman, Winn and maybe a further away guy like Baez or Hence.

Cardinals have been in contact with San Francisco about lefty Carlos Rodon, per source. The Twins were also interested before acquiring Tyler Mahle, and the Phillies have also pursued starters like Rodon.
Additional trades made Tuesday:
San Diego sent Luke Voit to the Nationals as part of the Soto trade, the team announced.
Minnesota acquired Reds starter Tyler Mahle for three prospects, Spencer Steer, Christian Encarnacion-Strand, and Steven Hajjar. All three are Top 14 prospects for Minnesota, per Baseball America.
Cubs dealt reliever David Robertson to the Phillies ahead of playing the Cardinals at Busch Stadium.

The Reds have acquired catcher Austin Romine from the Cardinals for cash, per a team announcement.

The Cardinals have acquired minor league backstop Austin Allen from the A’s, the team announced. Minor league pitcher Carlos Guarate is back to Oakland in return.

More to come.

Bader traded to the Yankees for Montgomery...

I know Bader is injured but when he gets better he's absolutely an asset. For a difference maker I'm ok trading him but Montgomery is still just a mid to late rotation guy. Would've rather traded one or two mid tier prospects for something like that. I also thought Bader was one of the more fun guys to watch and will be bummed to see him go.

Some of the articles I have read suggest that trading Bader means OF Alec Burleson could be recalled from memphis soon to replace him.............

Another article stated the cardinals now have 4 of the top 20 NL starting pitchers in ERA results.......Only NL team to have that stat......

I'm glad that we DIDN'T get Soto and it seems the Cardinals have addressed a more pressing issue of starting pitching and retained our best prospects....

It's cool that Bader goes to the Yankees as he is from that area........JMHO.............It really really is......

About 3 months ago I subscribed to STLtoday (STL Post dispatch ) and am so glad i did .....it was a great special offer and that allowed me to read the premium articles and post comments to any articles they post online ...............the comments about the Bader trade are running 70-30 in favor of the trade ........With the number of OF prospects i think it will benefit the Cardinals this season and next as Monty has the same contract status as HB does........

Wainwright
Mikolas
Hudson
Quintana
Montgomery

IMO , the cardinals did improve the team greatly without any sacrifice of highly touted prospects.....would love to see Walker and Winn get some playing time THIS YEAR , but doubtful they will....

Burleson should be packing his bags as I think he is on his way to STL........JMHO

I wanted Soto, but no use dwelling on it now.

I'll say that Quintana and Montgomery look like bigger improvements than Lester and Happ did at last year's deadline and they definitely helped last year.

I also think Carlson's D in center has been impressive so hopefully we don't miss Bader's glove too much.

And Yadi's back!

Yadi threw out a cubbie runner in the first inning tonight....a laser peg.......Danny Mc said Yadi has a baserunner caught stealing rate of 40.9 % for his career..........

FOR HIS CAREER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Quintana and Montgomery are good additions no doubt. What's frustrating is that 1. They make the team better and improve our chances of making the playoffs but clearly don't move the needle on competing with the Dodgers/Braves/Mets etc. and 2. We could have had both Quintana and Rodon (who is significantly better than Montgomery) during the offseason and not had to give up any players or prospects for them.

I liked the 100% nature of Bader.....hate losing a guy like this for Montgomery...a ho hummer with a high ERA. His ERA in 2019 was 6.75, followed by 5.11 and now 3.69, 23 walks in 21 games...not impressive.

Then he hits into a DP that wasn’t close to kill a rally.

As I was talking with my son earlier I told him I was very impressed with Carlson's play in CF since Bader went on IL. His first year, not so much.

You wanted Juan Soto.
Yes, of course, who wouldn’t have wanted Juan Soto on their baseball team?
But as I wrote 13 days ago: Even for a win-now, splurge-“Mo”-splurge guy like myself, the idea of the Cardinals trading for Juan Soto is a tough one to back.
So here we are, deadline day, and Soto is heading to San Diego.
“Obviously, you saw what they got in return,” said John “Mo” Mozeliak, the Cardinals’ president of baseball operations, after the deadline Tuesday. “So, it was better than we were willing to do.”

So what did they do?

They got pitching.
Yes, I would’ve preferred a splurge for Pablo Lopez (Marlins) or Carlos Rodon (Giants), but neither guy was dealt, so it’s not like the Cards were out-bid for those fellows.
Instead the Cards got, well, you probably know their names by now. But approach it this way: If I told you the Cards would get two lefty starters with a 3.50 ERA and a 3.69 ERA, would you have been happy with it?

Carlson makes a great catch in shallow CF. "Who needs Bader"?

You do realize he was coming off Tommy John in 2019 and only started two games, both in late September, right? And the less said about the 2020 shortened season as that throws a lot of players stats out of whack. Him having a sub-4.00 ERA pitching in the AL East is impressive. I don't know how you see 23 walks in 21 as a bad thing. His WHIP is the lowest of his career thus far. Both Waino and Mikolas have more walks than him.

Plus Montgomery is still under control for next season. I'm perfectly fine going down the stretch with a rotation of Waino, Mikolas, Quintana, Montgomery, and Hudson.
