TON with a 2 run homer in the bottom of the 9th soothe's some of the ache of this game.............

The ninth inning of Friday night’s 11-4 Atlanta Braves romp over the Cardinals at Busch Stadium had an upside for one pitcher who nearly was felled and a downside for a pitcher who may be headed down the I-55 corridor to Memphis.
Cardinals infielder Brendan Donovan breathed a bit easier after making a post-game visit to Atlanta right-hander Jackson Stephens in the Braves clubhouse.
Donovan's ninth-inning liner hit Stephens on the right side of his forehead. As they say, it will leave a mark. And Stephens was on his way to getting checked by medical authorities. But it appears as if the 220-pounder will be all right and Donovan said he felt better after shaking Jackson’s hand.

Cardinals left-hander Genesis Cabrera, who has been terribly inconsistent this season, was not hit in the head. But he was pelted with six hits and five runs in one official inning as he didn’t miss many, if any, bats, besides walking one and hitting another hitter as he worked the eighth and ninth.
It got so bad he was relieved by a catcher, Andrew Knizner, who retired two of three men to move the game along—at least until Stephens was hit by Donovan and had to leave the game.
The Cardinals’ brain trust was meeting late Friday night and likely will do so again Saturday to discuss the possibility of sending out Cabrera, who has allowed seven eight runs in 2 1/3 innings over his past two outings.

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said he was eager to watch video of right-hander Jack Flaherty’s fourth and, presumably, final rehab start Friday night in Memphis. After that, Marmol, president of baseball operations John Mozeliak and Flaherty are expected to have a summit Saturday with Marmol and Mozeliak ultimately to decide “what makes the most sense,” said Marmol, regarding when to activate Flaherty.
The last time this happened, Flaherty was granted his druthers of coming off the injured list after just two starts for his troublesome right shoulder. This time, he had much more rehab time and finished his start Friday strongly. After allowing a hit, a run and walking two in the first inning against Charlotte, Flaherty permitted just three more hits and a walk while fanning three in a 5 1/3 inning stint, covering 85 pitches, 50 of them strikes. He allowed just the one run and threw two wild pitches.

The strong start to shortstop prospect Masyn Winn’s week continued on Thursday with the 20-year-old’s two-for-four game that included a double, triple, three RBIs, and two walks against Northwest Arkansas.
With his productive night against the Naturals, Winn has had three consecutive multi-hit games and has hit base safely in eight of his last 11 games.
Along with Winn’s multi-hit night, these are some of the notable performances by Cardinals minor-leaguers:
Hits
Shortstop Masyn Winn, Class AA Springfield:
Over his first three games in Springfield’s current road series against Northwest Arkansas, Winn is six-for-13 with three doubles, a triple, four RBIs, and three walks. His Thursday night included an RBI double in the fourth inning and a two-run triple in the eighth inning on Springfield’s 14-6 win.The productive start to the road series come after Winn began the month of August batting .206 in 17 games.

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said he had been looking forward to playing the defending World Series champion Atlanta Braves this weekend here to see how his team stacked up against one of the clubs the Cardinals could be playing in October.
Friday’s one-sided loss didn’t offer much encouragement but, with the help of some wildness from Braves closer Kenley Jansen, the Cardinals rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth to overcome the Braves 6-5 Saturday night at Busch Stadium before a sellout crowd of 46,119.
Atlanta had beaten the Cardinals four times in five meetings this season.
There was some “Dad Strength” at work. Nolan Arenado brought it with him in his first game back after spending a day on the paternity list for the birth of his and wife Laura’s first child.

Arenado smacked four hits, including a two-run homer. And new father Ryan Helsley, pitching for the first time in 11 days, struck out two in a scoreless ninth and gained the victory.
Brendan Donovan doubled with one out in the home ninth against Braves closer Kenley Jansen and went to third on a wild pitch. Then, an off-form Jansen walked Paul Goldschmidt and hit Arenado to load the bases.
Corey Dickerson beat out an infield dribbler to score Donovan with the tying run and Tyler O’Neill drew a five-pitch walk for the winning run.
Cardinals starter Jordan Montgomery, who had given up just one run in 25 2/3 innings since the Cardinals acquired him from the New York Yankees, was touched for four runs in the fourth inning and had a no-decision.

Jack Flaherty is willing. Do the Cardinals think he’s able?
Pending a conversation Sunday involving Flaherty, manager Oliver Marmol and president of baseball operations John Mozeliak, chances seem good that the right-hander, who has battled a troublesome right shoulder for a couple of years, will be back on the Cardinals’ roster sometime within the week and pitching for them in that time.
“Our hope is ... absolutely,” said Marmol.
Whether or not that’s before Sept. 1, the date rosters can be expanded by two players, is unknown although it is more likely the Cardinals would wait until the weekend to activate him. Flaherty, who raised his pitch count to 85 on Friday night when he allowed one run in 5 1/3 innings at Memphis, said he wasn’t about to start playing junior GM now.

“These are decisions that are made way over my head,” said Flaherty, who had pushed to have his first rehab this season end after two games.
“I don’t get to make those decisions. All I can do is go out and pitch wherever they tell me to. So, that’s what I did. I continued to throw, continued to get better.”
Flaherty said his body had recovered well following each of his four starts on this second medical rehab and that he had rebounded within the game on Friday after he had walked two and had allowed a run in the first inning. A double play initiated by Memphis outfielder Connor Capel “kind of bailed me out of the inning,” said Flaherty.

UPDATE..................................

Cabrera dispatched to Memphis to gather himself

Left-handed reliever Genesis Cabrera, who has given up seven runs over his past 2 1/3 innings, was given a ticket to Class AAA Memphis, where he has to stay at least 15 days. Left-handed reliever Zack Thompson was recalled to take over Cabrera’s late-inning stints.
“(Cabrera) understood the move,” said Marmol. “In his words, (he said), “I need to go down and ... be effective against both lefties and righties.”

As a boy, Matt Holliday saw what made the Cardinals the Cardinals at old Busch Stadium, during a family road trip from Oklahoma.
“I just think about the matchup of how much I loved baseball with this baseball-crazy town,” he said.
As a rookie, Holliday saw what made the Cardinals the Cardinals from left field of that same stadium, fielding his position in his 2004 big-league debut.
“That sort of began my love affair with dreaming of someday being a St. Louis Cardinal,” he said.
As an All-Star, Holliday saw what made the Cardinals the Cardinals from his couch, taking in the 2006 World Series.

“I was sitting with my wife (Leslee) in Denver, after another losing season with the Rockies, watching the Cardinals win the World Series,” he said. “And I remember saying to her, ‘I would someday like to experience that. It looks so awesome. I would love to be part of a championship organization.’”
He would.
And he would exude what made the Cardinals the Cardinals.

On Saturday afternoon — so hot that he joked his sweat might make his new threads maroon — Holliday received his red jacket.

First pitch is 6:08 p.m. at Busch Stadium.............espn...................

Adam Wainwright and Yadier Molina take the field for the 322nd time as a battery, two shy of the all-time record. The pair will work to win the series against the surging NL East team in what has been a preview for a potential playoff matchup. The rubber match is the featured game on ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball broadcast.

Dylan Carlson returns to the starting lineup after four days. Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol indicated yesterday that they preferred Tyler O'Neill when facing pitchers with higher velocity pitches. With the Braves using the softer throwing Odorizzi, Carlson gets the tab today.
The top of the Cardinals lineup remains unchanged as management seem to have found their preferred top four hitters when facing right-handed pitching. The combination of Lars Nootbaar and Brenden Donovan in the one-two spots in the lineup, with Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado behind them, have energized the Cardinals offense to their largest lead in the division this season at six games.
The Braves will once again sit former Cardinal Marcell Ozuna and star outfielder Ronald Ocuna Jr.; the latter has struggled with knee injuries and soreness.

When’s the last time Molina has hit a ball hard? He is a double play waiting to happen.
