Correct. But it speaks to the fact that there is a lack of quality outfield prospects in the minors, who are ready to step on a major league field right now. In the last few years the Cardinal outfield production has been average to below average.

In today's MLB, without slug, you've got problems. They're average, but it's expected. It's really hard to try and manufacture runs night in and night out. Unless the slug increases dramatically, the pitching needs to be elite or they'll tank.
We shall see.
Even with how bad the offense has been the last few games, there is such a razor thin margin for error right now in starts by Mikolas and Fedde.
Mikolas just set a Cardinals franchise record for most HRs given up in a single game with 6 he has given up thus far today. Previous record was 5, done twice. Most recently by Scott Terry on June 4, 1989, also against the Cubs.

I am not an Ollie Marmol fan. But it is not his fault that he has to trot out Miles Mikolas and Eric Fedde every few days to the mound. That fact falls squarely on the DeWitts and Mozeliak. I need not remind you that ownership and management sat on their rearends in the off season and did nothing. It is what it is. I still hope they can get 82-85 wins in 2025
I think this weekend was Oli's way of sending a message to the front office, especially with keeping Mikolas in there to get shelled on Friday. Unfortunately, it sounds like the Cardinals lack of healthy starting pitching depth in the minors means McGreevey won't get a long look until August at the earliest.

Based on Oli's postgame comments, McGreevy will more than likely get the start next Saturday when he is eligible to come back from Memphis.
Wow, did he ever give that one a ride! 50 yrs. from now he'll still be talking about it with some of his old timer friends.
For god's sake, there must be some way to get those two guys out of the rotation. They're just liabilities.

Trying to find a bright side and I guess this it. We just lost a 7 game series over 2 weeks to the Cubs and Sonny didn’t pitch one game. Fedde and Miles pitched 3 or 4 of them.
162 games is a long long season and a team will go through some things. The offense is putrid right now, they just seem to be giving up AB’s to easily right now. Up until 2 1/2 weeks ago they took some grinding professional at bats.

I thought 2 week's ago that the Cardinals were staggering their way to the All Star break , but now it seems to be a life support defribs ready collapse of epic proportions............I was not expecting much this year as lame duck MO was taking his final season in stride doing what he's done in his tenure throughout.........
Then a funny thing happened.........the Redbirds are actually in contention for a WC berth............what the FO does in the next 3 weeks will send a message to the players as to the level of support the owners and FO will give them for the remainder of the season......It will be interesting to see what that support will look like..........will it be a move that increases the team's chances or another waiver wire addition of another team's cast offs..............
Surely we have better chances with an outfielder from AAA than the Hampson experiment........and don't call me Shirley.......
ps.......................I needed this off day as much as the Cardinals did......it's been brutal watching this team since the Pirates kicked their arse...................it really really has..........................

There is. It's called the 2026 season. There is no way they are going to park $26 mil on the bench or release them outright. That would be a black mark on the FO. It would show them to be irresponsible. It would make them despised and ridiculed by the fan base. Oh way, they already are. NM.
Was listening to KMOX on the way home tonight and it sounds like Mikolas is what he is at this point but the only way to fix Fedde is to have him work out of the bullpen for awhile.
With the draft next week I have been thinking about this for a long while. StL has done a terrible job. I realize the draft is a bit of a gamble. I just looked at the first two rounds from 2015 to 2024. Not one single All Star. Well, I take that back. Zac Gallen was an All Star in 2023 for Arizona. He is the only player that has had decent success. Whether he merits it or not he has been the opening day pitcher for AZ for the past 3 seasons.
I realize the players who were drafted the past 2-3 seasons are still making their way through the minors. But when you look at the other years Masyn Winn is the best of the lot. Last year was the only season that has been anywhere near successful. This year isn't had but it has not been as good as last year.
Jordan Walker and Alec Burleson, with career WAR of -1.9 and 1.6 have disappointed more than they have succeeded.
As ever there is hope for players like Michael McGreevy and Tink Hence. Alas they are still on the outside looking in. I know Hence is injured. Nevertheless despite being drafted in 2020 he has not contributed to the major league team.

How about trading one or both? Drop down to a 5-man rotation with Matz in their place. Maybe there's a contender out there desperate for just one more pitcher. I'm talking about Mikolas and Fedde. Looks to me like Walker is one of those big time prospects who's just never going to pan out. Think Dylan Carlson. As for Burleson, there's a lot to like. High BA with power and drives in runs.
If you don't want Mikolas and his $17 million dollar contract (half a season's worth any way) or Fedde, which sane GM will take them? You (Not you specifically) can't say "I don't want them because they are not performing well. Let's trade them." Who will take them? How much of the contract are you (The Cardinal's FO) going to assume? What kind of compensation are you getting in return? I am sure the Cards can trade them if they agree to take most of the remaining salary. Even so they are not going to get anyone of significance in return. A 29 year old Double A journeyman middle infielder that they will probably release at the end of the season.
Ah man, Dylan Carlson. I was off the hype-train early with him, and just remember being bewildered by the local media's touting him as a future All-Star even as he completely floundered. The thing is, it wasn't hard to see that he didn't have it. His fatal flaw was always that he just doesn't hit the ball hard. Even the one good season he had, he did not hit the ball hard. That doesn't typically bode well.
Jordan Walker's problem is different. He has massive power, but he just can't get anywhere near an optimal launch angle. He absolutely smokes balls into the ground where the end result is a groundout or single, when if he could get them in the air you're talking about home runs and doubles. If you search there's a video on MLB's website of the hardest hit ball of Walker's career, and of course it's a single. Add to that the inability to take walks and the strikeout rate that's gone up every year and it's not looking good. It's such a shame given the physical tools. I could be wrong but my impression is the club has devoted a lot of effort into fixing this, and Walker has been stubborn.
And good luck finding a trade partner for Mikolas unless you're willing to eat most of that salary. At which point, it may not be worth it. Gotta have someone to eat innings, especially with a lot of young pitchers on staff. You don't want to harm a young pitcher's career because you need them to eat innings in a season that doesn't matter. Now, if you want to shift Mikolas to the pen and give him spot starts as needed, in a way that allows young pitchers opportunities, I would be all for that.
