THAT'S A WINNER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.....................

The comeback Cardinals come through again with a dramatic pinch hit double by Brendan Donovan plating the tying and game winning RBI's in the 3-2 victory over the landslide-ing Rockies............

Miles Mikolas with an impressive quality start until his defense let him down over 6 2/3 innings.......his lack of run support has been an issue all season long , but he was bailed out late............
Kyle Leahy with 2 1/3 ings only allowing 1 hit with 2 K's and getting the win...........
Donnie Baseball with an epic return from injury for a pinch hit 2 RBI double to seal the win...............
Saggese with his first 3 hit game of his career................
Burleson goes 2-4 with an RBI..............

another nitty gritty dirt band win for the Cardinals picking up a WC game on the Reds......it ain't over yet guys and girls.............

How much longer do we wait for Gorman and Walker to fulfill some of that "great promise?" Can't remember how long it took for Grichuk and Carlson.

I think we are starting to see JW turn that corner a little bit. His defense has been solid and he has been raking for a while now. Only about a months worth of said raking, but you have to start somewhere. JW is still only 23, Gorman a little bit older.
I wonder JW has finally found trust in some coaching.

I'd like to be optimistic about him, but I find it hard. I'd love to see Gorman "turn the corner," due to his tremendous power. But his strikeout rate is sooooo disastrous I can't be optimistic there either. But he has slugged some no-doubters when he connects. It was that way with Grichuk but he just spent so much time on the injured list. When he was healthy, he combined tremendous foot speed with that long ball power.

I'm way less optimistic about Gorman. He has 30+ hr potential, but him starting against lefties is essentially a non-starter at this point and .235 against rhp isn't awesome either. I had hope he could be our mini Schwarber, but you can start Kyle against any pitcher. 50% of all pitches Gorman has seen are fastballs and sliders and he is hitting under .200 on those according data I cherry picked from baseball savant. Id like to see him stop getting under pitches when he barrels and just make contact. He is so strong, put that exit velo to use by just making contact.
I'm glad we are also seeing him at 3b. Can he improve? Sure, but to what extent? We are running out of places to hide him.

I stated after JW got to MLB that his raised toe stance on his front foot would cause him to swing at an off balance foundation and hoped he would change his stance to a more balanced stance as he is using now......I reiterated my opinion numerous times over his career and I am very happy that he has finally allowed the coaching at the recent AA level to finally sink in......

I believe if JW stays with this new batting stance that we will see sustained improvement in BA and with his power numbers......he will still struggle with the outside breaking pitches to an extent , but being only 23 he deserves 3-4 more years at least to refine this new approach at the plate.................his defense has improved tremendously compared to his initial play in RF..........it really really has...

As far as Gorman he is a much more question mark in my opinion as to his future as a Cardinal..........First off , he is a major defensive liability no matter where you put him.........he's too slow to field batted balls on the infield at an above average % and his arm accuracy is way below MLB average.................that limits his appeal to a DH role and his BA , OBP and OPS are lacking with his less than stellar contact rate.........I agree that when Gorman connects barrel wise that the ball will go out of any MLB stadium.......but that's the problem..................he has a high swing and miss rate continually batting behind in counts and that increases his K rate........and yes he is 2-3 older than JW so his leash should be shorter........

The Cardinals need to clear the runway for younger players to get their chance to make a difference.......

JJ Wetherholt is going to be a star IMHO............find a position and leave him there whether that's 2nd or 3rd base....Winn could win the Gold Glove this year at SS as his metrics warrant that award........

once again I fully expect the new FO to float Gorman this off season for help at SP and RP.......The return for Gorman will not be what it should be based on his past expectations but his potential has been lowered based on his on field results......

JMHO............

I think Gorman will be a useful baseball player and have a decent career. Probably never an everyday 3B, will DH a lot, but he has plus power and despite his strikeout rate his OBP is not terrible. His strikeout rate is actually down a decent amount this season (30% compared to nearly 38% last season) and his walk rate is improved as well.

Walker has been a lot better the last month or so, but that's a very small sample size with some really high BABIPs so I'm skeptical of reading too much into it. I obviously hope it continues but that .438 BABIP he had in July is not sustainable (Aaron Judge who is batting .336 has a .403 BABIP on the season), and I think overall he's still far more concerning. His OBP is terrible and when he hits the ball hard he hits it into the ground, which means his one defining asset, his power, is completely wasted (and in fact in this recent hot streak, he still hasn't been hitting homers). He's still a net negative in the field (-7 DRS, -3 OAA), his strikeout rate is up (slightly worse than Gorman's this season), and what's more, his bad 78 OPS+ this season is with a relatively high BABIP, which means he's probably been lucky and these numbers probably should be worse. Walker probably still has a higher ceiling than Gorman, but a much lower floor, and if he doesn't make strides to get to that ceiling he might be out of baseball entirely in a couple years.

A 2-12 lefty with a 6.00 + ERA has held the Cardinals to 2 hits and zero runs over 5 innings......go figure ................

I always thought his defense at second was plus.

The Rockies have two shutouts this year...guess who both are against

Cardinals get 3 back-to-back-to-back hits from the bottom of the order from the 7-8-9 spots in the bottom of the 2nd to take a 2-0 lead on the Rockies. Nootbaar and Saggese both single and then they are brought home on a double by Pages.

This gives McGreevy a 2-run cushion so hopefully he can give us 5+ strong innings and pick up his 5th win of the season. He is looking good with 2 K's through the first 2 innings.

McGreevy gives up a couple of earned runs, but Nootbaar goes deep for his 12th dinger for the year. Redbirds up 3-2 going into the bottom of the 5th.

So much for McGreevy getting the "W". The bullpen fails again as the Rockies take the lead 6-5 in the top of the 9th on the 2-run pinch hit home run from Hunter Goodman off of Jojo Romero.

Rockies take 2 out of 3 from the Cardinals with a 6-5 come from behind win. St. Louis is back to .500 for the season with a 61-61 record.
