With the Mets recent tailspin, the Cardinals are still within shouting distance of the last wild card spot.
Chasing too many teams. If they're chasing one team, it's possible for one to just fall apart down the stretch. They're chasing four. You'd have to put Arizona in that mix. Plus, they aren't very good. When you're four games under .500, you haven't exactly shown the ability to string games together.

With 14 games to play, if the Mets go 5-9(81-81), the Cardinals would have to go 9-5 just to tie. That's .642 ball. Add that to the fact that the other teams have to have a similar collapse.

The Cards are within shouting distance of spring training next year.

Agreed. The Diamondbacks, Reds, and Giants are ahead of the Cardinals. The Mets hold a halfgame lead over the Giants. I think there are too many teams to leapfrog with too few games left.

Can probably kiss .500 ball goodbye at this point. Would require a 9-4 finish to get there. Bad to be bad but good in that it will hopefully jolt BDW awake to the fact that he needs to get serious about rebuilding this franchise back to where it was. Keep your fingers crossed.

THAT'S A WINNER !!!!!!!!!!!

Cardinals get a quality start from McGreevy and a 2 run smashed tater from Saggese as they beat the Reds 3-0 and even the 3 game series at 1-1.......

McGreevy goes 7 IP , 3 H and 6 K's..................
Saggese ....2-4 ......1 HR , 2 RBI's..................
Burleson....2-4.....1 R......
Pages....2-3....

Romero.....1 IP ,....2 K's.......
O'Brien......1 IP.......1 K.....Save.....

rubber game tomorrow @ 12:15..........let's hope Pallante gives us a chance , but I'm not optimistic he will........

I think that McGreevy has surpassed Sonny Gray has the "ace" of the staff and it would be a crime if he is not the 2026 opening day starter. I really like the kid.

Has anybody else noticed that Saggese used to bat without wearing any batting gloves (just like Matt Carpenter, but from the other side of the plate). I have noticed lately that he is wearing a batting glove on his left hand. His at bat last night where he hit the home run was probably the best AB that I have seen from him since he has been called up.

and the beat goes on...............lol.........insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.....

therefore it's insanity to continue running Pallante out there as a stater................he , at best is a 1 maybe 2 inning pitcher.....
batters usually connect with a better barrel rate their second AB against him if they don't even get him on their first AB.....

I just don't see his future has him as a starter and even as a major league pitcher.......hope I'm wrong but it seems now that it's not an " if batters get to him but when "............JMHO......

Also , it seems like at least 25 % of Pallante's pitches are in the dirt if not even closer to 33 %..........dumb......

You may be correct. However, that is a big chore for a pitcher, who has not yet won 10 major league games. It also bespeaks of the sad shape of this pitching staff.

How ESPN can give StL a C- is beyond me. Perhaps not an F but a D to D- seems more appropriate.

St. Louis Cardinals: C-

Meh. The Cardinals hung in the wild-card race longer than they probably should have for a team that ranks next-to-last in strikeout rate from their pitchers and just out of the cellar in home runs from their hitters. They did learn a few things about some of their young players, but the answers weren't all good ones: Jordan Walker and Nolan Gorman probably aren't solutions as regulars; Victor Scott II can certainly play center field, but his bat is questionable; Ivan Herrera can hit but his catching days might be over after not playing behind the plate the final three months. The "meh" factor has shown up in the attendance: Excluding the 2021 season when attendance was likely impacted by COVID-19, the Cardinals have their lowest per-game average since 1995 (and that was coming off the strike, so you really go back to 1984 for a lower attendance figure). Chaim Bloom takes over the baseball operations reins this offseason. He has his work cut out for him.

Not fielding a team worthy of a playoff run deserves a D in it's own right.

I am reading now that the gameplan is to move Herrera back to catcher. I am with you on the roster. It is not a championhip roster. I think it is going to take some time. I think I have posted this elsewhere. Matt Holliday said that the only untradeable Cardinal is JJ Wetherholt.

Was surprised to find out that tonight is first time Sonny has pitched in San Fran. Would have figured it would have happened before tonight, especially since he started his career in Oakland.

Cardinals officially eliminated from postseason contention after tonight's 4-3 loss in San Francisco.

There was still a scenario where the Cardinals could have gotten in but it required them to win out and the Mets losing out the rest of the way.

just saw where Sonny Gray said he'll consider waiving his no trade clause.........his salary for 2026 is $ 35 million........

The Cards would have to eat some of Gray's contract to move him. How much I don't know but $10m plus seems like the starting point. Then they have to go out and find another MLB quality pitcher. Seems like 2026 TD might be a better time.

This is good progress. Bernie hit the nail on the head for the future. We need a volume of prospects in A and AA. Sonny could get us prospects. The club will not be spending in 2026. Evaluations have to be on point and get as many prospects as imaginable.

I don't think they will look for anything MLB ready I'm 2026. And I just made a post as well, but you are right, STL will probably have to eat some of his contract. Just get some prospects.

Unfortunately this should have started after the 71 win 2023 season. I know that is backseat driving, but I feel the handwriting was on the wall at that time. I believe there needs to be an infusion of everyday players through the trade market. As I have stated before Matt Halliday believes the only untradeable everyday player is JJ Wetherholt. It could be a long road back to the top of the division and even longer to be a legit World Series contender.

Is Matt with the Cardinals, or just a commentator? Just curious about how much he knows about the depth of the organization.

That is a good question. I do not think he has any official position (somebody will probably correct me), but I would think he has much better insight than any of us. I think his comments speak to the overall condition of the organization as a whole. I also believe he was saying that the Cardinals should listen to trade offers for any of their everyday players except JJ. And listen would be the operative word in my view.
