Herr still had to hit the ball to knock those runs in.
Agreed, I was not trying to diminish what Tommy had done. It was just that Vince made it easy, once he got on base. A walk or single was basically a double or triple after he stole a base or two. I still remember being at Wrigley and watching Vince and Willy do a double/double steal. They were on first and second. Vince over slid third base and the throw was made, so he got in a run down and beat it without a throwing error, scored and Willie took 3rd during the run down.

Winn, Walker, Wetherholt, Baez, Baez, Rodriguez, Bernal, hopefully Burleson, Herrera, Fermin plus McGreevy, Mathews, Leahy, Pallante, Hjerpe, Doyle
I’m calling it now: dynasty!

Having said the above, all this rebuilding was unnecessary until they went cheap and gutted the farm system (etc). So while this rebuilding is super exciting I feel like a fool buying ( literally) into it while they’re saving money with one of the smallest payrolls per revenue dollar.

Mozeliak drafted / traded for all these guys

I think it was roster management, poor free agent signings, and unwillingness to admit we needed to rebuild that got him pushed out. Arenado falling off a cliff at age of 32 (2023) could not have been predicted.

Continuing to spend money on mediocre free agents and cutting the minor league staff was a huge mistake

Contreras $88M Dec 2022
Gray $75M Nov 2023
Matz $44M Nov 2021
Gibson $13M 1 year Nov 23
Lynn $11m 1 year Nov 23
Mikolas $40m 2 year ext Mar 2023

Contreras was paid to be a good hitting catcher. The Cubs had already decided he was a bad catcher but Cards signed him for that anyway.
Sonny Gray pitched to his contract but it was wasted on the mediocre team
The others were total failures

Jordan Walker figured it out too late for Mozeliak. Failure to O'Neil (couldnt stay healthy) Carlson (faded after injuries) Gorman (total bust)

Mozeliak was not "unwilling to admit we needed to rebuild." We actually did not need to rebuild. The billionaire owners of the team that consistently pulled in top 3 attendance in the league absolutely could have afforded to keep payrolls at the top-8 level they historically had been, and remain competitive without gutting the farm. Instead they dictated to the front office that they needed to remain competitive and reduce cost at the same time. That's an ownership call, not a front office call.

By the way the Contreras and Gray deals were not bad, lol. They were actually very good value.

Also, if contreras and gray were bad contracts (see an excellent fwar argument above), the trade values for those
two specifically wouldn't have earned the return they did and given us the young stud pitchers we received.
Whether we needed a rebuild or not, the return for those two specifically got us a big jump in that direction.
And, yes the ownership are who pushed us down that road.

On the Jesus Baez front: he signed with the Mets as a 17 yr old and now 4 years into his career has to be protected
by being placed on the 40 man this year or be eligible for the rule 5 draft. (he turns 22 during the 2026 season) while
the cards would probably prefer to keep him in the minors for another year or two, he will force their hand with a
40 man roster spot. i see him getting to the show next year (if there is a season next year) and if all goes as expected,
he's our everyday 3B in 2028.
