I like the deadline trades

Moz was stuck in past refusing to trade inside division. The division means nothing with the new balanced schedule.

We have not been competitive with Brewers or Cubs since 2021 when we fired our manager for making playoffs 3 of 3 years and going on a 17 game winning streak in 2021 to make they playoffs. Schildt went on to lead the Padres to playoffs 2 of 2 years. Imagine if we had kept him in St. Louis.

Lars was fan favorite but due to injuries etc. never played to potential.
Dustin was rental but so injury prone we were lucky to trade him before he made his annual injury
JoJo is decent left reliever but was going to get expensive as FA.

We got

Dustin/Jo Joe : 2 great outfielders Frias and Ragsdale who were 11 and 13 in Brewers system but became Frias became 4 in Cardinals system Ragsdale 10. Shows how much stronger Brewers farm system is
Noot: 2 good pitchers Eagan Cardinals 17 and Santana Cardinals 22

Outfield is a major Cardinal weakness. We have Walker and ? Lars was not the answer.

I only wish they had traded Gorman too.

Pretty obvious they are keeping Baez where he's at to give him AB's as much as possible.

yep , there were a couple articles stating he won't be called up before August 15th to preserve his rookie status for next year.....

He also still strikes out a ton. He could very well turn into the next Gorman.

Which got me thinking (this is never good):

Hindsight is always 20-20, but damn we have held onto some of our stud prospects for too long sometimes, or you know, flip them for the wrong player and lose out that way too. I feel like we haven't done well trading and/or holding onto them the majority of the time.

Traded Shelby Miller (ok he wasn't a prospect anymore) for Jason Heyward. We get 1 season which was pretty decent but he bolted. The Braves trade Miller to Arizona for Dansby Swanson.

Traded Alcantara and Gallen to Miami for Ozuna, who forgot how to hit HRs with us. And those 2 turn into cy young winners, and Ozuna learns to hit homers again after leaving.

Carson Kelly might be the only one that ended up fine. We got MVP Goldschmidt and Kelly got better once leaving the desert.

I hope Bloom is better than Mo in this regard.

In the last decade or so, who would we consider our stud prospects? In my mind, I guess i'd say Top 50. About the cutoff of where Baez is now.

Looking at MLB Pipeline, that got dark, 2018-2021 was pretty much just Libby and Gorman over and over again. I'd actually say our biggest issue was not enough stud prospects - Of that group, i'd say probably a fairly average, or maybe slightly above average hit rate.

Obviously, you are correct. The gallen/alcantara for ozuna trade was an unmitigated disaster. But I think those guys were just scouted/developed correctly by the Marlins - to my albeit quick research, they never reached top 75 status.

There will come a time in this rebuild where we can't just stockpile, we have to pick and choose a bit, but man. It is refreshing to see like 9-12 intriguing arms down on the farm where we don't have to bank on just 1 intriguing arm to hit. Or now like 4 different oufield prospects instead of just praying carlson works out (and carlson is def an example of a guy to your point we hung on to too long.)

Edit: I share your concern on Baez btw. We all love the power, but he's regressed back to more strikeouts this year, less OB, and he's not stealing bases like he used to.

You are right that we didn't have top 100 prospects, I meant the best of just our own prospects. And who knows how things would have played out in this alternate trade or keep universe.

And OT passing really pulled the rug out from under everything. And we don’t even know how things would have gone their either. The hacking scandal didn't help too.

I think the producer on the broadcast is related to the late Arnie Harris from WGN. This producers makes no bones about finding the chicks in the stands and Chip feeds it. Not a complaint.

I hate checking on the runner before you throw your first pitch with a good base stealer on. Early count running is often, but before first pitch, you just give them more clues. I’d rather a pitch out on first pitch. I’ll look on how many times a baserunner goes on 1st pitch, but I’d say not often. I’m probably wrong. Ivan’s arm is a joke back there. Interfered with or not. It’s a noodle. I like Ivan, but he isn’t a catcher on this level. His contact bat plays, especially for that position, he just isn’t a catcher. My opinion of course.

Admittedly on Baez though.

I’m getting a little tired or guys like preito going to the plate putting together clutch ABs that are just 3 pitch strikeouts.

This team leads the league in with RISP where we just have the worst ABs you’ll ever see (I know it’s a made up stat / eye test lol)
