Just a guess here on the band area. Looking at a couple of my pics of the band during the game, I'm wondering if the Tuba's would create sight line issues for fans in the area behind the band and or up into the next level. Now there are two small risers that the band members (not in the seats) stand on, with the drummer on the ground next to them. Comparing the bleachers extended out next to the risers, its looks like the Tuba's would be higher and further out. Blocking more of the view of fans behind them. Just a thought.

**Tuba's are on the risers if anyone was wondering.

Most of what they are doing now, is behind the partitions, plumbing and electrical in the future club area's. We do not meet every week during the basketball season, I come in early on occasion and look for any changes etc. The club area's are not much to look at right now, lots of equipment stored in there as they work.
I've taken a few throughout the month and will be sending them to DIA this weekend. They will do a monthly gallery until the end of the season. Then we will go back to weekly until its finished.

So, after following this thread for the last year, I finally got to attend the tame today. Here are my unsolicited thoughts.

1) The environment inside the seating bowl is excellent. The color scheme, sight angles, seating sections, etc. are all very well done. Walking into the arena for the first time, I felt like I was in a professional arena, or at least an arena dedicated to my Illini. I was overwhelmed by the ambiance.

2) it isn't without faults inside. First, the band section needs to be re-thought and restructured. About 25 band members awkwardly take up a section that could seat 100 students. There are risers, pushed in retractable seats, completely unused rows, etc. all in a prime area. My guess is that after this season, or once the demand is there, DIA will figure out a way to make this area more efficient and look better. Second, the tunnels to the right and left of the new Krush section just look bland. They are gaping holes in the seating bowl. They need to be filled in somehow - I would propose graphic tarps or something to make it not look like too much of a hole. Finally, the orange wall right behind the Krush needs some more graphics on it. When the arena is empty, it looks very odd. "Fighting Illini" "Orange Krush"... something. When recruits tour and before and after games, that big orange wall looks silly.

3) I don't mid a lot of the things that other people seem to despise. I think that the suites look excellent, and I don't mind the loge seating. I think that after awhile, they DIA might start looking at re-purposing that area if they can make more with regular seats. It wasn't much of an eyesore, except that the seats weren't really full.

4) I went with my 1 year old son, so I ended up making my way to the last row in C (200 level). I don't care what anyone says - go to the last row at almost any other big ten arena and tell me that we have it bad. I have sat at the top of Crisler, Breslin, NW, Iowa, Purdue, Ohio State, and Indiana. Our last row has great sight lines and you still feel part of the action. The only arena's above that come close is Purdue and Iowa.

5) Ok, now let's talk about the common areas... holy crap have they created a mess. I am in construction (electrical in Atlanta working on the major stadiums down there) so I notice all of the exposed conduits, pipes, low voltage wires, etc. I know it isn't finished yet, but the contractors have really botched a lot of that work thus far. Timing is so critical with the construction to get conduits in the concrete and hidden. It appears that not much was attempted to be hidden thus far.

With the glass wall meeting the original concrete facade, you really want to be able to highlight those beautiful components of the building when walking through the corridor and with the new lighting that they have installed. As of now, It appears that a lot of the systems are being run overhead, suspended in the open air (i.e. plumbing to the new bathrooms, low voltage control wiring, etc.) In my opinion, it looks awful. it's not something that painting the pipes is going to fix, and at this stage, there isn't a whole lot they can do. I hope I am wrong.

I won't complain too much else except that the last push to finish the interior better have an incredible attention to detail. The roughness of the concrete (everywhere), the cheap look of the tile work, the obvious rush that was done to get the building game day ready... they better take their time to completely finish the project, or the concourse areas, clubs, etc. are going to be an overall failure in my opinion. It just feels very cheap all around.

I'll be back later this year to see if I am being too critical. I'll be back next year to hopefully see a polished product.

I'll end by saying that from C section, and down at the floor level after the game, I really love the vibe inside the seating bowl. Now we just need to win some freaking games.

I think that it is amazing what they have accomplished so far! Remember there are another 7 or 8 months of construction to be done over next Spring, Summer and Fall.

The orange wall behind the Krush is scheduled to have "Orange Krush" on it. The band area needs some additional work (like that fake 4th row of seats), but I think the band contributes much more to the atmosphere than 100 aditional students could do.

Have some patience!

I'm not knocking the band. They were great yesterday and always have been outstanding. I just hate the way that area looks. It looks like they were an afterthought and they definitely should not be.

Look at the Breslin center band. Fully integrated into the seating bowl and students. There are a lot of them, but they fill the space very well.

and perhaps the band that you saw was not the full band as they often play with a skeleton crew while the students are gone. :thumb:

I agree it doesn't look the best, but it is what the band wanted (risers). The arena didn't want to lose the continuity of the bowl etc. The SFC is planning on getting a tarp/curtain to hang behind the band that should help some.

Does anyone have pictures of the band section and what it looks like during games? I haven't noticed how bad it's been during games but I haven't been looking for it.

Thanks, this is exactly what I was hoping for. A tarp will definitely help.

Why break it up like that? Not likely to get too many TV shots/visuals showing both words. Why not just put Fighting Illini on both walls?

FIGHTING........................................ILLINI

doesn't look as good as

FIGHTING ILLINI...........................FIGHTING ILLINI

Still an improvement, I guess. JMO

$160 Million?

I went to the Michigan Illinois game and I have to ask at this point...where did the $ go? Nothing was a wow factor of any sort. Is there more coming that is actually going to create a wow or did we just get bamboozled by another state run organization...really unimpressive for the price tag unless the impressive part is yet to come. The new bathrooms on the C level are tiny, the lines snake forever..

AGREED! I know we tried modeling this after Breslin but theirs is just a cut above ours...so much more professional looking imo.

I agree, they do have a restroom problem for all us still in "C" section.
I understand taking care of the top donors but come on. Maybe since they are not serving us beer like in Springfield they feel we don't need as many?

Looks good. Wish they would add the LED ribbon board to cover up the awful exposed concrete above the suites.

Yeah, even thought that is going to be taken care of next year I'm really surprised they didn't do something simple to cover it up for this year. Given the overall cost of the project, it would have seemed worthwhile to at least buy some orange or blue fabric (or concrete paint) and just cover the thing for this year.

It certainly caught my eye in a bad way when I was the Notre Dame game and looks pretty shoddy when you see it on TV.

All in all, not a big deal... just one of the little things that makes you scratch your head.

I think it looks a lot nicer, but does seem like an exorbitant bill, even considering the HVAC, mechanical, and behind-the-scenes stuff.
