Pipelines or not does anyone feel good seeing a 16 year old go through that.

Ok, let's not be overly dramatic in the other direction. He's getting a full ride to play in the Big XII with two of his buddies. Hard to feel bad about that. It may not have been his first choice, but it's a real good one. He'll do well and won't have any regrets.

I agree 100%. If a choice had to be made, he made the right one. Hate to be the one to break the news, but this is recruiting in the big boy world. This won't be the last quagmire that we're involved in. All we can ask is that we win our share

The same choice could be made and without a kid crying at his announcement. That’s the real problem.

Pulling a scholarship from a kid due to no fault of his own on his commitment day is classless and deplorable if true. If Robert smith never picked up the phone for BU again I couldn't blame him.

How would you feel if you had your heart set on a college that had offered you acceptance but another kids parent from your high school called the school and forced them to reject you?

Im betting it would be devastating to you as a teenager. Sometimes I feel like we minimize just how big a college choice is, let alone one for big time sports.

The Irvins are the parent in this metaphor BTW.

Like all of a sudden Illinois is this kids #1 choice? He was never high on us until the last second. It sucks what happened but he had PLENTY of time to join up or take an OV. Its big boy recruiting. Lets go. I trust BU and especially CHIN

been following this board for ten years and never seen as much speculation/conjecture as i have today. those of you essentially slandering our own coach without any reliable information should take a step back

Like Bobby Simmons, Derek Rose, and Jabari Parker?
Yeah. We didn't get them then but you can be damn sure that when the next Jabari or Rose comes along out of there it ain't happening now, regardless of how good Illinois is in the future. Bridge = burned. I guess we chose the smaller bridge, though. Really hope it pays off.

So can anybody actually verify that THT wanted to come to Illinois and we at the last minute pulled the plug? If so I sincerely need to evaluate my love for this basketball program going forward.....sorry has to be said

I appreciate what you're saying, but this isn't just some smoke at this point, it's a burned down building. I don't need to see the flames to know there was a fire.

I feel as bad as anybody that this worked out this way. However, why didn't he have this much emotion over the U of I six months ago? He could have committed in August and this is all a non issue. He waited until after Ayo committed, my guess is because he figured we're going to be pretty good.

My ONLY issue with Illinois is not having the social aspect of this covered before having him on an OV. If that was cleared.....then move forward. If MIF had this much of a beef, then you drop it.

You simply cannot cut the legs out of MIF at this point. They hand you the biggest recruit we've had from the public league in YEARS.....you're going to turn around after 10 years of bad basketball and start feeling bad?

Two coaches got fired here over getting screwed by recruits and their "ties" to the other programs. No, we need our own ties to players. Quite honestly, it's about time.

Good. So we don't have to waste our recruiting time and effort on kids that we would never have gotten in the first place.

You are basically making the same point I am. There is an adult(s) who knew this was happening and there should have never been a committable offer after the Ayo committed. THT could have made an announcement when he was more comfortable. Instead adults running programs ruined it and jerked a kid around along the way. I am not blaming anyone specifically but this was bad.

Bob Knight, reportedly, pulled offers if any recruit even talked to another coach. BU, reportedly, pulled an offer because of an AAU coach. Times have changed, but...

uhhhh? I get the anger, put lets be real. The kid only gave us real consideration a week ago.

Angry, no. Sad, yes. And for sure THT could have committed to UI much sooner and Ayo would probably not be an Illini today, if that were the case. It's a bittersweet situation how the process came about, making many in the Illini family divided, as one can see per the posts. As of now, not going to let it faze me, instead looking forward to this year of Illini basketball!

Yes. Times have changed. And it's about time we change with the times.

It's funny how we are so "above this" but the Dukes, North Carolinas and Kentuckys aren't

And here it is. Confirmed by O'Brien

Talen Horton-Tucker had a terrific time on his official visit to Illinois this past weekend. The Simeon senior, generally regarded as the No. 2 player in the state’s class of 2018, wanted to commit to Illinois on Thursday according to a source.

But it never happened. Horton-Tucker never gave Illinois an oral commitment because the offer was taken off the table by Illinois.

So now we know MIF "handed" us AYO? So, nothing Illinois basketball did in the past, the academics, the campus, proximity to home had anything to do with it? We just hire Chin, and MIF force him to goto Illinois? COME ON MAN!!!!!!!!!!

Looks like Prohm has built a pipeline to Chicago in less than a year, and our coaches have failed at it for decades? Nothing is guaranteed in life, and what if we upset MIF down the line?

No way to slice it, unless this was THT's OWN choice, it's DISGUSTING!

I just bought 3 tickets to a last minute "surprise" charity game between MSU and Georgia being held at a 12k arena in Grand Rapids, MI Sunday. My daughter bleeds green, this game sold out in hours, and at least I'll get to see how proud she is of her Sparty program while I relish in envy!

Here's my take. Under Groce Illinois was always the second best team in recruiting. Carlton Bragg came out and said even after he'd committed to Kansas that he talked to Groce because he was a good mentor. I'd rather get recruits the way we did with Ayo than be in the friend zone of recruiting.

This is complete utter BS. You stand by your promises. If what was said is true (and I hope it isn't), then give me John Groce back because I cannot and will not root for a coaching staff that would pull an offer from a recruit on the day of his announcement for anyone, period. And if Whitman had anything to do with this, then for as much as I like him, I have lost all respect for him as well. Class and honoring promises means more to me than a W-L record. Basically, there is no good look for Underwood if he pulled the offer. Either he knew that Irvins' problem with THT and had THT visit and reaffirmed the offer in spite of that, or he should have known. If this is out of the blue from the Irvins, then he should have told them to F off.
