Should we prefer a coach that is passive? BU went after two alpha dogs. I have a feeling we end up with Finke who I think will have a strong season.

I am good with that - i hear his growth plates are still open :)

Pretty disgusted that we literally turn a kid away that wants to be here. Feel bad for him. Don’t care if he goes on to be the worst DI player in history, still would bother me.

Yeah, the sausage is supposed to get made in the back of the kitchen. Now everyone's grossed out and talking about how it's made, when actually nothing has changed.

Bottom line is Illinois is getting stung by decisions other folks made that spiraled out of control. Unfortunate, but as far as I'm concerned, the landscape is what it is, and you gotta get at least some top-notch talent if you want to compete. Politics is not a risk-free game.

True, the politics up there are basically unnavigable. But, our coaching staff is definitely culpable in its handling of the situation. The "sausage making" should have happened in the "back of the kitchen" but instead happened on the day of his announcement with all eyes on THT. Not knowing and communicating (with the Irvins) about this potentiality prior shows a lack of awareness and judgement by our staff and calls into question how open those lines of communication are with the Irvins. If we're really going to have a MIF pipeline, would the coach of MIF need to communicate with our staff via Twitter? Something's got to give, either there was a lack of communication throughout the recruiting process or we didn't take the Irvins' at face value. This, to me, is more upsetting than the reality that THT went to Iowa State because of Chicago politics. That comes with the scene and playing ball for big recruits. But to handle that scene so poorly in our first go-around is definitely a cause for major concern.

The next few days will be telling, if the media jumps on this and it goes national, how will that look?

If what Piper and Werner said on Tay and Carp is true. No one gets to talk about how classless other programs are from this point forward. This 16 year old kid wanted to come to UI last night and we just pulled the rug out from under him on the day of his announcement. I have been a big fan of UI for thirty years and will continue to be but this was an embarrassment and completely bush league by our staff.

This was worse than the Eric Gordon and Cliff Alexander actions.

I'm embarrassed to be an Illinois fan today. 40+ years as a fan. Sad sad day on so many fronts.

I would think as a 40 year fan you would be disgusted with mediocre playing results

I have been. But that is a far different embarrassed than this. I don't lose respect for kids and coaches just trying to win. Today....I have no respect for what underwood and his staff did. Caved in to a scumbag.

I feel as bad as anybody that this worked out this way. However, why didn't he have this much emotion over the U of I six months ago? He could have committed in August and this is all a non issue. He waited until after Ayo committed, my guess is because he figured we're going to be pretty good.

My ONLY issue with Illinois is not having the social aspect of this covered before having him on an OV. If that was cleared.....then move forward. If MIF had this much of a beef, then you drop it.

You simply cannot cut the legs out of MIF at this point. They hand you the biggest recruit we've had from the public league in YEARS.....you're going to turn around after 10 years of bad basketball and start feeling bad?

Two coaches got fired here over getting screwed by recruits and their "ties" to the other programs. No, we need our own ties to players. Quite honestly, it's about time.

If this is all about leaving an AAU program that is really petty

Sure. But, feels like we are heading down the same path we have been down for several years now. Every time things start to look up, particularly in our relationship with, Chicago something happens to mess it up.

I have a couple of degrees from the University. I have been an Illinois basketball fan for over 50 years and a season ticket holder through thick and thin.

I didn’t think I’d ever say this (or have cause to), but if the rumors are true and we “played the game” and yanked an offer to a young man who we recruited and wanted to come to the University simply to placate another recruit and/or Chicago AAU interests, I’m no longer proud of or interested in Illinois basketball.

could you list the top talent that we have been the beneficiaries of over the last decade?

Are you really that dense? Losing a relationship with one of the top high school powers in the state is not a good thing. And losing that relationship the way Illinois did makes it even worse.

And, we've been in on a lot of Simeon talent going back to Deon Thomas, haven't signed many of them, but at least we had a seat at the table. Betting that seat is gone.

We gotten Brock, Nunn, Tate and Williams this Millennium from Simeon. How will we ever survive? smh

I'd rather have Irvin in my corner any day of the week.

the facts are that we don't know what all transpired over the past few days and people are speculating wildly as if they do know. What makes it worse is the high and mighty attitude that seems to be accompanying the criticism.

They regularly produce top talent. Guess you don't care....plus every Illinois high school coach just watched what Illinois did. You have no problem there either?

No, every Illinois high school coach just watched what Chicago politics did TO ILLINOIS.
We've always had a problem with it while always wanting a piece of it.

You want to play with Chicago talent, here you go. It's always been going on the whole 40 years you've been a fan. Lou had to deal with it. Do you really think nothing like this was going on with Collins and Chicago back then?
Now with twitter, FB, forums, etc....we see every tiny little bit of drama up close.
It is what it is.

Not a problem, but if what has transpired is actually true that the Irvin's pulled a last minute power play, then we'd better get every one of their players that we want in the future...to paraphrase MIF, commitment works both ways...

Well I am sure that I am a bit dense in many areas. I just don't think that this will end up being a big deal. The kid is going to a top school for free. He gets to play with other kids from chicago. I'm sure he will have a great four years in Iowa.

I am wondering what AAU program besides the Fire are willing to send us players. I have a feeling if this is all true you are going to see a backlash from other AAU clubs

This. +1000
And if we want to flash credentials I have 4 degrees from the beloved and have been a fan for 60 years. I don’t turn my back based on rumors and yes, I would like to win. That doesn’t make me a terrible person but my law degree tells me to wait to see evidence before I decide a case. It seems that many don’t wait to see the evidence and jump on the high horse to preach. Well, you can ride that horse out of town. See ya.

But he didn't want to go to Iowa. He wanted to come here and play....
