You could say call the timeout after the free throw, but it gives them a chance to draw up a play. And then if they make it after a timeout is called then everyone here would say “how could Brad call that timeout at the end of the game there? Gotta let them scramble and play it out!”
Tennessee had a TO left and chose not to use it because the scramble in that situation favors the offense.

Brad said on the radio that he wishes he would have called a TO, FWIW.
Of course he did. Hindsight analysis because Tennessee scored. It was a double-edged sword coaching situation. Won't fault Illini for not calling a timeout.

It was a disappointing, lost opportunity for the Illini today, but one that should help the team in the long run. Need to really come out and dominate Mizzou and Chicago State to close out the 2024 portion of season. 9-3 would have been acceptable pre season, so Illini have a chance to get there.

Hopefully execution will improve as this team matures. Tennessee was the more experienced team, and it showed in the end. These are growing pains we expected, but it still hurts to lose two games that should have been won.

Not going to regurgitate a lot of what has been said, but one miscellaneous takeaway:

Morez Johnson needs to play more than he spends on the bench. Especially tonight when Tomi wasn’t great. Very frustrated by his number of minutes so far.

Fell apart once again but its not unexpected with 4 freshmen playing important minutes. I hope this leads to better results down the road.

Very frustraiting the way the losses. This team can hang with anyone but the losses are infuriating.

First NW, now this. IDGAD... both of these game we should have won. Should be 9-1. Free throws, inbounds, turnovers... the simple stuff...

Very, very, very frustraiting.

Seems like nobody - BU concentrates more on the officials than anything.

Hopefully they will learn fast that EVERY possession matters on offense and defense. We have some mental lapses on both ends that are mind boggling. Winning at a high level is hard. The mental mistakes or mental laziness will continue to allow us to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Zooming out a bit, Ivisic looks really solid and KJ is obviously an absolute star. We have some other solid pieces as well, but our 2 other big time talents need to develop into stars -Riley and Morez. Keep giving those 2 minutes and we could be dramatically better in another month.
I am betting on Rez out of these two.

I don't even know where to begin with it...

- Horrible to watch, some of the worst officiating I've ever seen

- Lazy passes, Freshman mistakes, fouling (I guess) too much, dumb defensive possessions, and some bad coaching.

- I don't think Tennessee is all that good...Definitely not saying they are bad, but that is not a final 4 team to me.

- I need the staff to actually RUN something offensively. I get KJ is good, but you're running that kid out there to do absolutely everything. Get these kids running a system that keeps everyone involved and adjust if needed.

- I thought we were pretty good defensively overall and I think we can get better.

- We cannot give Ben that much run... miss me with all the analytics, he cannot defend and if he isn't getting or hitting shots, I don't need to see him. His feet are terribly slow.

- I want more run from DGL, because I know he can score and I know he can defend. At times we need a small, quick guard to get past a guy and cause havoc defensively. Give the kid more tick.

- I always have to remind myself how young we are...it's a bunch of kids who are still learning to win. But things need to start clearing things up now. We got talent, we can play with any team in the nation, but the actual W's need to happen.
Disappointed we let this get away from us but I gotta say I think the future is looking good for us. With getting out rebounded and the sloppy turnovers we made we were still right there. We have 3 guys in shooting slumps right now. Ben, Will and Dre and maybe add Tomi for the last two games and we still had every chance in the world to knock off the #1 team. I think everyone now can see that this team has a very high ceiling. We are definitely capable of reaching the final four when everything comes together.

A few thoughts:

-All of those saying Tennessee wasn't that good are wrong... A major reason why they didn't "look" good is because of our teams overall defense. We were surprisingly sticky and tough and honestly, Tennessee made some hellatious/tough shots at the end.

-KJ carried our team most of the game, but 2 late TO's a missed free throw, and giving up a layup on his man end of game is a brutal way to end.

-Ben is unbelievably soft. I don't want to spend too much time on this because I hate player bashing, but the most important thing to me is how hard you play and he is just not tough enough to rebound. I watched countless rebounds go off his hands because he almost never attacks the ball with aggression.

-Morez motor is unbelievable and if Brad runs him off because of how blind he is to play him, I don't think I can stomach it.

-Obviously very happy we played them to the wire and love the upside of our team, and props to the crowd, it was a GREAT environment tonight.

-Underwood's paid a lot of $ to coach our team and he is very good at team building, identifying talent, etc... But my goodness, his team's out of time out execution & out of bound plays are inexcusable. I'm ready to start a fund to hire an assistant who's only job is to do out of time out play calls.

Or if we can make layups.....not calling anyone out by name. We focus on Ben, but there's another guy who's getting playing time based on HS ranking and in the last two losses, just didn't get it done on the offensive end got pushed around just as badly on the defensive end.

I understand Brads adaption to the new college basketball and being comfortable completely reloading his roster each year.

You cannot screw this Morez thing up I'm sorry it would do a lot of damage
