Tennessee 86, Illinois 79 Postgame

With how good Illinois started the first few minutes of the second half, I’d like to see how this game ended up without that hook and hold call. Not saying the outcome would have changed, but TN was ice cold shooting until that call. Oh well.
Agree it changed the momentum, but one call early in the second half doesn't beat you .

What happened to our defense? We've given up 86 and 89 points our last two games. I thought that was supposed to be our strongsuit? WOuld really like to see it come back. If it was there these last two games we win easily against FAU and would have pulled it out today.
Also huge props to coach Rick Barnes for shutting down our supposedly down hill offense. Nearly 40 3 point shots aren't gonna win. Especially when only 3 of our men can shoot it! His defense on drop and close out scheme was outstanding. Out coached today! Coach is awesome, but his halftime speech to CBS reporter told me everything I needed to know. " we missed a ton of open 3's". Really coach Underwood. All from 25 ft. Didn't know we had 3 Steph Currys?
Beat Mizzou, all is forgiven. Lose again to those bums, No Sir!

Lots of switching.

Defense is not the reason we lost today. It wasn't perfect but was enough to win. If we shot like we normally do, we win. Missed a lot of wide open shots and they made a lot of random shots that don't normally go in. Don't know what game you watched but defense was fine.

Enjoyed watching a competitive game even though we lost. Could we have played better? You bet. The same could be said by Tennessee. In seeing what Gurrier did, it gives me even more confidence in this team going forward. Before today, I felt that we might be pretty good. Now, I DO feel that we can compete with Purdue for a BIG title.

Im ok with the loss, but hope we learn eventually how impressive we are when taking the right shot. 36 3's after shooting 70% Tuesday night from 2. Different defense and personnel, but I stand by our shot selection and ability to knock down open jumpers
I too feel that we took to many three's. There were lanes that were open and it seems we waited until the last 7-8 minutes to start driving the ball.

I mean...if I had come back from the future and told everyone the Gurrier goes for 20......we all would have laughed and said we win in a blowout.

Clearly TSJ and Domask left some in NY. Tough road trip.

We all would have accepted 2-1 before we left.

Now go brush our teeth!!

Point guard did not cost us this game, it was people not keeping their opponent from penetrating while on defense.
I don't see it that way. Our sets were fine. We just did not penetrate enough to rebound the ball. We took to many threes which resulted in a lot of rebounds for the Vols.

We win this on a neutral court. The refs came out the second half wearing Vols jerseys. It is what it is. Everytime ILL had a lead there were unrelenting calls against us. Everytime we were closing the gap, more fouls against us. That flagrant on Ty was so baffling.
