Tennessee 86, Illinois 79 Postgame

Defense is not the reason we lost today. It wasn't perfect but was enough to win. If we shot like we normally do, we win. Missed a lot of wide open shots and they made a lot of random shots that don't normally go in. Don't know what game you watched but defense was fine.
The fade away three in the corner comes to mind

Never could recover from that tech. and 5 pt possession that turned the momentum back to Tennessee. Impressed the guys fought so hard to the last second. This was good experience for later in the year and hopefully we learn from it.

Would have liked to see more attempts to get it inside. There were often just 5 players standing outside the 3-pt. line. Hard to win a full game doing that. We were too dependent on the 3-pointer today.
Take that away and the game’s even up to the end.

The awareness, cohesion, and coach-ability of this team gives me hope for at least a Sweet 16 or Elite 8-type season.
(This team plays with poise most of the time.)

It helps when you’ve got pieces like he has…but for the people that say Brad can’t gameplan I’d have to say this is a solid example of doing a prettygood job in that regard. (Yes we lost but we gave ourselves a fighting chance until the bitter end pretty much. I would have rather had a “w” of course…yet I’m glad this unit basically, seems to understand how to play in these types of games. (It’s early December…that bodes well.)

I like that run and jump press. I just kinda wish we deployed it a little more…for a possession here or there. It does exactly what he wants it to. Def. has the potential to really be a momentum killer for the bad guys. JMO

Yes we’re #10 in the country…and we’re mostly a get stops, physicality/bang on the half-court kinda team. But goddarn it’s effective…I like it!

Guys, if anything should be taken away from this game it’s that if Shannon or Domask don’t have their A game, we’ve got Quincy rounding into form. We gave them too many second chance points and yes, a lot of that was from over the back fouls, but that’s life, especially on the road. With a few exceptions, I thought Coleman had a decent game too. This team is going to win more than they lose and I feel better about them in March than last year’s team by a mile.
Over the back is an obvious call to me -
sad refs -I really thought we were gonna kick their butts when we were up 4 then that flagrant was called.

We need him this year. Sure, we rebound we'll as a team but the in games I've watched so far it seems we have no rim protector, especially during games like today.
However, I am extremely high on this team. As others have said, we were right there with our best players having off games. Watch out when TSJ, Domask and and one or two othe guys are all on fire in the same game. It's going to happen...soon.
Well, I think we have some good shotblockers on this team(TJ, Guerrier, Coleman) but yes, Dainja is that physical presence and enforcer that I felt like was missing in the lane today. He made one good defensive play near the rim against either Aidoo or Jordan-James and then he gets taken out. Underwood even mentioned that he needs to do a better job of getting Dainja and Coleman involved together

I'm not mad at the 3s. I'd say a solid 75% of the misses were good looks. They were sagging it in the paint to take away driving lanes. They're just longer and more athletic on average and than any other team we've faced. Outside of Zeigler, they match up well with us. We should've forced knecht and vescovi to guard more even early in the second half.

No quarrels with the team today. Tough game. Awful refs. We missed shots and they got all the bounces. Win our next 3 and this has been a successful first half of the season

One quarrel should be that the Illini allowed Tennessee 21 points in the first 7 minute of the game. 3 points a minute! With Illini possessions mixed in.

The Illini were able to close the gap when Tennessee's shooting went dead for a while. But if the Illini allow that kind of thing at Dance Time things will end quickly.
It was the combination of Tennessee starting off red-hot from the field and their ability to live in the Paint at the same time. Sometimes you can't do anything about the first thing... but you've gotta do something about the second. And how did Tennessee cool off after the first 7 minutes? D-A-I-N-J-A came in. Took away the middle and their outside shooting went cold.

Illini held things level until Tennessee once again got off early in the second half with those same two things rolling. From which the Illini never recovered.

But even with that... the Illini nearly had a miracle finish. Just dug too deep a hole.

I'm surprised it was as close of a game with how poorly Shannon and domask shot.
I don't feel TSJ shot that bad given the non calls he missed that normally he would be at the line.

I was very encouraged by how much better he us passing on the move to open shooters and cutters where last year he at times got caught up. I think home court was huge today for Tennessee and I like our squad more than theirs. Domask is only going to get better. He is the one that missed some shots I think he will make more often than not. I'm glad we have Quincy and his injury is getting better and the new transfers are starting to mesh. Its still very early for them as Illini.

Of course, I may have gotten too used to having Kofi. I realize BU has a different philosophy, but I miss that paint presence!

Always more fun to read these threads after a win, but losing is part of the game too. Some takeaways...
1. Guys seemed tired, especially halfway through the second half. 3 road games in a week, tough draw
2. Three point shooting is volatile, was not our night. Shannon and Domask 1-11, Hawkins 3-10. Better from Goode and Guerrier at 5-13.
3. Free throws!!! 24-28 is huge. If teams are going to foul you, make them pay. Shannon 11-11, outstanding performance in this area
4. We lost to a top 10 team by 7 points when most would agree that things did not go our way. I like our chances in the Big Ten.
5. Eight days before Colgate, plenty of time to get healthy and game plan. I-L-L

The lack of true Point showed up again with ballhanding woes.
we only had 9 turnovers the entire game . . . the bigger issue IMHO was that they had their way in the paint, and Shannon didn't get some of the calls on drives he usually gets. He got mugged a couple times with no call made. Pile on shooting 25% from 3 on 36 (!!!) tries, getting outrebounded, and that's a big delta.

i won't even mention that slimy little fhead Vescovi, who while he played hard, had some cheapshit plays (that he got called on only about half the time).
