Tennessee 86, Illinois 79 Postgame

Can Hawkins figure out how to take a charge? His inside defense was horrible. How do we not have another big man on the roster besides him and Dainja?

No quarrels with the team today. Tough game. Awful refs. We missed shots and they got all the bounces. Win our next 3 and this has been a successful first half of the season
way too many threes taken (double what UT took) and outrebounded by 9. FT shooting great again, hopefully that trend continues
These refs decided from the get go they wanted to let it be a bruiser of a game. But when Terrence Shannon is smacked in the face going to the basket and they don’t even review. Just incompetence.. that said if Goode and Domask hit the broadside of a barn in this then we are not falling behind. We’ll be ok.

The Nice:

A March-tournament-style game in December.

A good yardstick game for the Illini to measure where they’re at – and where they need to be.

Showed good fight at the end to make things close.

The Not Nice:

Letting Tennessee have their way almost at will to get into the paint and drive to the hole all day.

Domask couldn’t settle into his game.

Shannon was kept under control for a good part of the game.

The lack of true Point showed up again with ballhanding woes.

Bottom Line:

The Beloved need to up their overall game if they have hopes of getting beyond the Sweet Sixteen level.

Gotta find a better way to clog up the middle.

But still, Our shade of Orange is way better than Theirs.
Beyond the Sweet 16? I wouldn't predict anything beyond the round of 32. There are certainly things I like about this team, but there are a lot of problems that I don't think can be fixed. That said, quite happy with 2-1 over the last three games.

Alabama entered game shooting 41% from 3. Illini shoot under 34%.
Exactly. And when they went cold PU got back in it. I’m ok if you’re getting drive and kick open 3s but that’s not what we were shooting for the most part. Loved the action at the end when Guerrier was getting screen on left side with shooter (Goode mostly) and then when they switched he went straight to the hole. Would have to have seen that when UT went on their run to stop the momentum a little. Think we would’ve gotten some better looks had we done that sooner.

What happened to our defense? We've given up 86 and 89 points our last two games. I thought that was supposed to be our strongsuit? WOuld really like to see it come back. If it was there these last two games we win easily against FAU and would have pulled it out today.
Most has to do with the level of competition and pace. Number of points is the wrong metric, though. Points per possession is a lot more useful. And opposing FG%.

Always love the mass freakouts after beating #11 and losing on the road to #17 by 7. This team is really good and way better than last year. Some things to fix, but a REAL chance to make a deep run in March for the first time in a while
100% agree. This is the type of early season road loss that Michigan State (in previous years) would take which serves to make them better and tougher down the stretch. I really like this team. Will they win the Big Ten or go deep in March? I don't know, but I really like our chances.

Sometimes it is just a make or miss game. Domask and TSJ combining for 7-27 and 1-11 from three is not going to end up with a win in many games.

With that said, I think Tennessee played with more intensity and desire than we did in the second half.

I’d really like to stop seeing Domask bring up the ball against pressure. He’s lost it several times this year and it’s really not his strength. I thought the play he lost the ball in the backcourt in the second half today was a play we never fully recovered from. Unless the whole opposing team is pressing, then have someone come help and let him pass the ball to them, or set a screen in the backcourt. He can always get it back in the front court.

Yep, IMO this is our best shot at a sweat 16 team since Kofi and Ayo.

This is going to be a special year

Totally agree that those refs had no business officiating a game that big. I won't blame them for the loss, but the extremely late block call on Guerrier near the end of the game?...gimme a break!

I think Illini shot 17 fewer 2-pt shots than they averaged in first 8 games.

When luke Goode leads us in rebounds we will more than likely lose nothing against him just need more from our bigs

We win this on a neutral court. The refs came out the second half wearing Vols jerseys. It is what it is. Everytime ILL had a lead there were unrelenting calls against us. Everytime we were closing the gap, more fouls against us. That flagrant on Ty was so baffling.

There’s always going to be some level of home cooking in that type of game, but we need to be more disciplined in defending without fouling. Way too many guys got beat off the dribble, leading to shots at the rim that we had to contest and commit fouls. Not reading too deep into it for our defense though given the competition. That said, if our defense is truly “elite,” it’s looked a bit closer to “slightly above average” against the Marquettes, FAUs, and Tennessees of the world. Still work to be done on that end of the floor, but impressed with our offense the last 7 days.
