Tennessee 86, Illinois 79 Postgame

Just finished watching. Was on Dad Duty during the game

-Terrible shot selection
-Off shooting games from TSJ and Domask
-Phantom hook and hold changed momentum as always
-Got bothered by TN’s pressure
-Overall officiating very questionable

Will be one of the toughest games of the year, and overall we faired well. The best I have felt about a team since Ayo.
Rutgers & Tennessee at their place have gotta be the toughest defenses we face this year, right?

i didnt watch the game, any reason why Dainja played 4 mins?
It seems that a mistake from Dain gets him benched. Other guys screw up and keep playing.

Tenn seemed quicker and more athletic. Got most of the loose balls. They went over the back nearly every rebound, got called for it twice (?)

They collapsed to the middle when TSJ drove, our 3 point shooters aren't good enough to prevent that.

Approximately half the games we will hit less than our average 3 pt shooting percentage. About half we will hit more.

You’re just not going to stress me out about a hard-fought loss on December 9th to one of the top teams in the country on their home court. And it says something that BU seems to feel the same way. The difference between his demeanor on the bench, in press conferences, and in these little snippets speaking to the team is night and day from where he was last year. He knows we have something special here.

What happened to our defense? We've given up 86 and 89 points our last two games. I thought that was supposed to be our strongsuit? WOuld really like to see it come back. If it was there these last two games we win easily against FAU and would have pulled it out today.
We definitely could have played better D, especially early. But the last 2 teams are really good and have some serious ballers. Some of those Tennessee shots in the 2nd half were very well defended and yet somehow found the basket. With some better officiating and just a few breaks we win this game even without TJ and Domask going off. This game shows me that if and when we lose, others teams will have had to play their best.

THIS

we had a pretty good (as in bad) amount of misfires and we still hung with a VG team on their court. obviously, full credit to TN, but I truly believe the outcome could be different if we meet them again

We found out after the fact what he was dealing with last year (Epps and others essentially being uncoachable) . This group seems to be coachable and committed. It’s no wonder his demeanor has changed.

LaTulip pointed out that our defense today was actually not too bad, at least according to one key measurement, points per possession. Today that number was 0.96 according to Mike, which he said was pretty good. That number was actually an improvement over the FAU game. I think the problems today were shot selection (too many 3's) and rebounding (43-34 UT).

A game to learn from - as several have said, we'll be ok..
Who? We've never had a Boswell on the roster . . .

Fun first 24 minutes or so of game time. Very frustrating from there to the end.

Most of my thoughts have already been said by others I think but I'll still throw them out there...

The refs were refs. I wouldn't say we got screwed by them because the FTs were about equal, but that was two different twenty minute games. Real quick, smooth 1st half and just a slog of a 2nd half. It is so tough to play when you have the change in the way a game is called.

Brad referenced that Tennessee was letting us shoot so that's why we shot so many threes. But I thought I saw a lot of three guys standing on the perimeter and then a little two man game up top. I'm not one for "Demitri, moooooove!!!!!" but it felt stagnant at times and I'm surprised we got to 79.

I mentioned the lack of a PG in the game thread and it's not so much that we need assists in order to score, but it would help so much in setting up our offense. I think the idea was to try and have Domask bring up the ball to initiate the offense. But then you had Ziegler clown him a couple of times and Domask was so shook he didn't want anything to do with touching the ball in the backcourt.

This is going to be the hot take of the post... Today's game reminds me of the past two years in such a way and all I can see going forward is a first round exit because we plop ourselves on the three point line, shots don't fall and we never adjust to get to the basket (or we do way too late).

All of that said, it was great to see the team in person for the first time in...a decade? It was awesome to cheer them off the court with the lead at halftime. And, despite all the above pearl clutching, I am excited about the rest of this year because the potential is there.

I think we're pretty solid also, which is not inconsistent with a Round of 32 finish. Our problems have been talked about ad nauseam and I agree with the general consensus. I'm not a gloom and doomer by any means. I think we'll be in the top 25 most of the year. But I wouldn't predict a Sweet 16 or better. I hope I'm wrong and of course anything can happen.
You can be wrong, that's OK dawg.

A win would've it's a tall order on the road. Defense did not come out to play today. I think that was the main difference. This group can definitely score and hit 3's when needed but the defensive efficiency definitely took a hit today.

I did like that Guerrier and Hawkins were hitting their 3's today and that our guys were making their free throws. Guerrier and Rodgers in particular made the majority of their free throws, so that is improving as well. Nothing to get too upset about. I think we learned that our team can play with the top teams in the country and I'll take 2 out of 3 during this tough road/neutral site game stretch. I personally thought we'd go 1-2 or 0-3 so to end this stretch 2-1 is a win in my book

I'm a little worried that Dainja is kind of getting lost in the shuffle. We're going to need him for next year so hopefully Brad can find him some more mins so that he doesn't get disgruntled
You realize both QG and CH hit their first 2 3’s then were 1-6 and 1-8 after that.

Way too many missed mostly open 3’s. Unfortunately this team isn’t a good shooting team - outside of Goode.

This a popular theme. Let me say I think they aren't tired and the only negative impact of a road trip like this where we get a four day break before this game is the distractions that come from being on the road.

Tired is not an issue.
And perhaps the distractions of finals week too. After all, you can't just mail it in. Brad said they got a late getaway yesterday because of all the finals. Damn university. LOL

And again, it is mostly the 3's (especially with CH) we are taking in terms of looks. Very few players at this level can take and make step back 3's at a regular rate, or 3's not in rhythm. CH just seems to be in love with them despite the math. He is great when he is set, ready and open, but after that...not so much. Why he can't internalize that is beyond me. It is tanking his NBA chances at this point since he rarely looks to score in the paint despite his size.
